Il nome esteso del Dow Jones è Dow Jones Industrial Average, DJIA, acronimo che rimanda al titolo dell'opera. La pubblicazione - che accompagna la mostra Inganni ad arte. Meraviglie del trompe-l'oeil dall'antichità al contemporaneo (Firenze, Palazzo Strozzi, 16 ottobre 2009-24 gennaio 2010) - è nata da un'intensa conversazione tra esperti internazionali di economia e d'arte, e analizza il quadro nei suoi rimandi simbolici e allusivi, contestualizzando l'opera nell'America di quegli anni. The extraordinary mobility of people all over the world, the uninterrupted barrage of information from the media, the continuous flow of communications and non-stop traceability are phenomena that have induced the individual to adopt an accelerated mode in the private sphere as well, and have led to the development of speed dating (for the emotional sphere), power naps (for physical recharging), quality time (dedicated to the family) and fast food (as a form of nutrition). The myths of speed and faster production were fundamental elements from the beginning of the industrial era, linked as they were to the very concept of Modernity and the movements, such as Futurism and Constructivism, that formed the basis of 20th century art. The time=money equation became the very motor of our economy, leading to forced reduction of time and maximum exploitation of the qualities of ever new, innovative and creative production processes. The exhibition project includes contributions from Italian and international artists such as the Datenstrudel group (Germany), Marnix de Nijs (Netherlands), Reynold Reynolds (USA), Jens Risch (Germany), Michael Sailstorfer (Germany) and Arcangelo Sassolino (Italy). Distributed according to their different approaches to the theme of time, the works by these artists will form an itinerary involving visitors in strong and unusual space-time experiences focusing on the contradictions and tensions of our hyperfast society. Il sogno è iniziato qui. Così Isabelle de Borchgrave ricorda l'idea che ha dato origine alla mostra, indicando la Cavalcata dei Magi di Benozzo Gozzoli nella cappella di Palazzo Medici Riccardi. Dall'incontro con questa famosissima opera è nata infatti la nuova collezione della pittrice e designer belga, ventotto preziosi abiti in carta che riproducono, insieme a una sfilata ispirata a tre secoli di ritratti medicei, alcuni dei costumi più spettacolari tra quelli rappresentati nell'affresco. Con questa esposizione è stato inaugurato il nuovo, organico, percorso museale di Palazzo Medici Riccardi, che consentirà di visitare le grandi stanze del piano nobile, finora mai aperte al pubblico, e soprattutto di scoprire la Cappella dei Magi entrando dalla porta principale. Nata a Bruxelles, Isabelle de Borchgrave ha studiato al Centre des Arts Décoratifs e all'Académie Royale de Belgique. Dal 1994 lavora alla collezione di abiti in carta Papiers à la mode, esposta con grande successo in vari paesi europei, in Nord e Sud America e in Giappone.
