Added to this was a strong belief in progress with a focus on individuality and independence. Should society be characterized by humanistic philosophy or by economic liberal philosophy? And what philosophy was behind the art industrial movement in the struggle over who should define modern society? Was it possible to turn the 'masses' into useful and educated citizens through historicist interior design and furniture with carvings and numerous ornaments? The Copenhagen carpenters C.B. Hansen and Severin & Andreas Jensen established themselves in backyards in the middle of Copenhagen, but both developed large furniture companies. They bought and established domiciles in old noble mansions around Kongens Nytorv, where they worked in the art industry together with the leading architects of the time, and they participated in the major world exhibitions. Their history of development and changes in design and production form from craft to industry reflects the ideological and market-oriented forces of the time.
