Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Fort Morgan has stood sentry on the Gulf of Mexico for almost 200 years. This pictorial history illustrates the people and events that have shaped its history.Following the War of 1812, the United States embarked upon a major building program to improve the nation's seacoast defenses. A project was begun on Mobile Bay that would take almost twelve years to complete, plagued by harsh conditions, a lack of resources, and financial burdens. The end result, completed and opened in March of 1834, was Fort Morgan. Fort Morgan has played many key roles in the nation's military. During the Civil War, Fort Morgan provided covering fire for blockade runners entering and leaving Mobile Bay. The fort fell into disrepair after the Civil War as military planners thought it had outlived its usefulness. Between 1895 and 1904, five modern reinforced concrete batteries rose from the sands. At the peak of operations between 1910 and 1918, more than one hundred structures dotted the Mobile Bay landscape. This unique pictorial retrospective explores the growth and change at Fort Morgan, allowing the reader a chance to step back in time to the days when our nation's military fortifications provided a sense of security and protection to every citizen. Included are images culled from the Fort Morgan Museum, the National Archives and Records, and private collections. These vintage photographs depict every aspect of the fort's history, from the damage caused by the Union siege guns to the days following World War II when the fort was temporarily turned into a resort, and from the Confederates who worked to strengthen Mobile's lower defense line to the devastation of the hurricanes in 1906 and 1916.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Discover the resilience of a community with an unusual proclivity towards natural catastrophes and its citizens' unwavering strength. One hundred pounds of trade goods was the price paid to the Lenape Indians in 1681 for the land where Bound Brook now stands. The town slowly took shape and by the time of the Revolutionary War, it had grown to 35 families. Toll roads, railroads, canals, industry, and commerce all began to evolve in Bound Brook which by 1891, had an established town government, as well as a swelling population and economy. Along with this tremendous growth, a library, a hospital, schools, churches, and hundreds of homes were built to accommodate the ever-increasing number of residents. Sadly, however, natural disaster tended to disrupt what was normally a prosperous but quiet life in Bound Brook. When the Raritan River flooded nearly every year, it caused severe damage to the center of town. In 1881, a disastrous fire destroyed all the buildings in one Main Street block. In 1896, flooding caused the lime at the L.D. Cook lumberyard to ignite by spontaneous combustion. Fortunately, after each disaster Bound Brook survived and rebuilt, emerging stronger and more united. Its history, people, and spirit have made Bound Brook one of the best places to live in New Jersey and havemade Bound Brook an inspiring and unforgettable book.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Located in the heart of Appalachia, rural Barbour County is bound on the east by the Allegheny Mountains, and on the west by the rolling hills that lead to the Ohio River. The Tygart River and its tributaries flow to the north through Barbour County, and historic maps identify the county as the Western Waters. Once a trackless forest used as hunting grounds by Native Americans, the county was permanently settled in the late 1700s and officially named in 1843 for Philip Pendleton Barbour, a philanthropist and member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Known also for its focus on health care, the county may best be known as the site of the first land battle of the Civil War in 1861 and for the double-barreled bridge that played a role in that event. Over the years, the hardy members of this region have carved their living out of the mountains--mining and timber have helped sustain the county's communities. Recorded for generations to come in documents and other visual memorabilia, the singular history of Barbour County abounds with individual stories of industry, courage, determination, and faith.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Like giant sentinels standing guard, California's lighthouses keep silent vigils over the turbulent waters of the Pacific. In 1850, Congress appropriated funds to build eight lighthouses on the West Coast, and three years later, construction began on the project. The first lighthouse to become operational on the West Coast was that on Alcatraz Island on June 1, 1854. While the other seven were being completed, Congress authorized funds to construct a second set of eight lighthouses, and by 1930, California boasted 40 light stations. Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Ocean, emotion, and constant promotion--Take a walk through Atlantic City's history told through hundreds of unique photos.Few American resort cities rival the romantic splendor of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Since 1854, this island has evoked dreams and memories of days lived amid white sand beaches, a vibrant boardwalk, exciting amusement piers, and grand hotels. For decades, it was a place where teenagers fell in love, returned for honeymoons, and later brought families. Atlantic City is a nostalgic return to the pre-casino days that now seem relatively innocent. The founders believed that the city would become a grand health resort, featuring healthful sea breezes and balmy days. Nearly deserted when the first train loaded with day-trippers arrived on July 1, 1854, Atlantic City, by 1900, was known throughout much of the world as The Queen of American Resorts. With huge hotels lining the Boardwalk and unique amusement piers jutting into the ocean, the city thrived on what one promoter called ocean, emotion, and constant promotion. Those were the days when bathers frolicked on the beach in drab clothing, when the Boardwalk was alive with throngs of happy visitors, and Miss America actually strolled the Boardwalk amid the crowds. Images like those, and of course of the annual Easter Parade, one of the East Coast's premier social events, are among the nearly two hundred photographs carefully selected for this long-awaited book.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Originally called Sippican for the Native Americans who lived here, the town of Marion has a long and rich history, which can be seen here in over two hundred beautiful photographs. Settled by twenty-nine Pilgrim families in 1678, its shores have since attracted artists, writers, and architects, as well as two U.S. presidents. Henry James's characters visited Marion in The Bostonians, and Century Magazine highlighted the summer community in its pages at the start of the twentieth century. Located on Buzzards Bay, the town of Marion has evaded the real estate development that has destroyed many historic towns. Many of the original houses built in Marion between 1690 and 1920 still remain. Each chapter in Marion is dedicated to a distinct area in this charming seaside town and to the notable people who made Marion their summer home. Old Landing, Wharf Village, Water Street, and the Tabor Academy campus are just a few of the neighborhoods captured in these pages.…

Neuware - Embraced by Sylvan Lake on the north, Shark River on the south, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Avon-by-the-Sea has always been synonymous with sandy beaches, great surfing, swimming, fishing, and panoramic views of its waters. Founded in the late nineteenth century by a tobaccoindustrialist, Avon-by-the-Sea became a resort by the early twentieth century. By restricting expansion early, the founders made sure that their virtual utopia would forever remain a small seaside community. Avon-by-the-Sea is the ideal pictorial history for this model community. With over two hundred images, primarily gathered from dozens of local residents, very little of the town's rich past escapes attention. This lively history includes a full chapter on the Avon Inn, the best-known and certainly best-loved guesthouse in the town's history. Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Originally part of the Dedham Grant of 1635, Dover, Massachusetts, became Dedham's Fourth Precinct in 1729 and the Springfield Parish of Dedham in 1748. When the Commonwealth incorporated it in 1836, Dover's economy was based on farming and grazing. Several companies, including the E.F. Hodgson Company and the Harvard Apparatus Company, successfully manufactured portable houses and medical instruments in Dover. However, they eventually left, as Dover remained agriculturally based. By 1896, Dover had become a suburban community. From 1900 to 1914, wealthy Bostonians--many of them members of the Norfolk Hunt Club--built at least eighteen spacious country estates in Dover, far from the noise and hubbub of the city. Population grew slowly after World War I, but in 1945, the town increased in numbers, as veterans returned from World War II and others saw the convenience of commuting to work in Boston while living in a pastoral environment. Once the home of Sen. Leverett Saltonstall, Gov. Francis Sargent, and benefactress Amelia Peabody, Dover today is an elegant country town, a mixture of estates, open fields, forests, and family neighborhoods.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Since its incorporation in 1915, Broward County has been a community in transition. Once a rustic frontier of palmettos and mangroves, then a seasonal tourist community, it is now a bustling area of over 1.5 million people. This metropolitan reputation was cemented in a Money magazine article in the late 1990s that touted the town of Hollywood, once just a bedroom community sandwiched between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, as having an ethnic make-up that mirrors what America will look like by the year 2022. That distinction led to an extensive, locally supported oral history project in Hollywood. The memories of 42 residents, recorded for the county's historical archives, span 75 years of racial and ethnic change in Hollywood. These candid accounts come from whites and African Americans; Hispanics of Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican descent; Bahamians and Jamaicans; Haitians; Chinese; and South Americans. Telling stories of the past-- of segregated beaches, buses, and rest rooms; of facing the culture of a new country; and of causes over the years that have brought different ethnic groups together--these individuals provide valuable, often poignant insight into race relations in America. And they do so in their own words.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - As centuries turn and decades pass, many wars and major historical events fade into the national memory as bold-face words in our history textbooks. However, the Civil War is unique, in that it still remains a heavily discussed, published, and debated topic in today's society. No other war has struck such a chord in our country's consciousness, combining romantic notions of glory and chivalry with horrific images of death and devastation, both of the landscape and its people. Entire libraries of books are devoted to discussing the battles, the tactics, and machines of warfare, the strategies of notable and eccentric commanders, and the biographies of the many larger-than-life personalities conducting the war, both civilian and military. But like most wars, the Civil War was a rich man's war, but a poor man's fight. It is the story of the common soldier's plight that is most engaging, for it is in those stories in which one sees the true effects the war had on the people and time. The Tar Heel State provided much of the manpower behind the Confederate armies and thus, sacrificed many of its fathers and sons for the Confederate cause. An eclectic scrapbook of sorts, Piedmont Soldiers and Their Families details, in word and image, the lives of some of those common soldiers and their families in Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Yadkin, and Davidson Counties, allowing today's readers an opportunity to explore the lives of their ancestors affected by the war.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Once part of Marlborough and later of Westborough, Northborough declared its independence in 1766, ten years before the American colonies did the same. It has since grown from a country village to a town in little danger of becoming either a city or a suburb.Always alert to the concerns of the larger world, Northborough sees its central location in Massachusetts and New England as presenting bothopportunities for its enrichment and challenges to its integrity. The town's accessibility makes it attractive to newcomers, but it has stoutly resisted runaway commercial or industrial development and has striven to remain neighborly. This book, while offering a few glances back at Northborough's first century, concentrates on its second. At the beginning of that century, Northborough built its new town hall not on a church green as before but on the nearby Boston Post Road, thus encouraging a trueMain Street. At its end an interstate highway sliced across the town's northern section, thereby redefining that Main Street. Northborough life during that century appears here in all its variety: a people at home, at work, at school, at worship, and at leisure.…
