Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Old stories never end; they just come down the generations to resolve themselves among the living. The scene is Charleston, South Carolina; the time, the 1920s, when old ladies dream of the past and a strange new dance, the Charleston, is seducing the youth of the city. Years later, whispers emerge of something baffling and tragic that happened back then. As an old man confronts those demanding the truth, we catch brilliant flashes of the confrontation between the dark, doomed Hirsch Hess, son of immigrants, and the fantastically ethereal Ned Grimke, a scion of the city. Told in intoxicatingly beautiful prose, this story of passion, beauty and the deadly effects of sexual repression takes us to a specific time and place, yet simultaneously blossoms as a universal tale of the human heart in conflict with its era. This cult classic, set in the most intriguing period of one of America s most beautiful cities, is now restored to print with an afterword by its author that traces the' 130 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Windham and Willimantic is the story of a town built on waterpower and imagination. While rivers provided power for local industries, imagination made the town a national innovator in typography, papermaking, and textile manufacturing. This is where the first papermaking machinery in the country was made. This is the home of the American Thread Company, which grew from one of the first successful makers of cotton thread into an enterprise occupying one million square feet of factory space spread over forty acres. Windham and Willimantic, however, is not all about work. In this volume learn how an eighteenth-century embarrassment became a symbol of civic pride; meet two movie stars who dropped in when their airliner made an emergency landing at the local airport; and join Willimantic's Fourth of July Boom Box Parade, where everyone is a participant.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The history of Meredith as a corporate town dates back more than two hundred thirty years. Like most older towns, especially those devoted largely to agriculture, Meredith has greatly diminished in territory since its original incorporation; unlike most New Hampshire towns of this size, however, it is progressive and prosperous, and the valuation of the town has steadily increased. This growth is the result of Meredith's change from an agricultural town to an industrial town to today's prosperous four-season resort in the heart of the Lakes Region, at the foothills of the White Mountains. Meredith, part of the Then & Now series, places vintage images alongside contemporary photographs, taken by photographer Aaron Ober, to show the changes that have taken place in this area through the years.…

Neuware - Al Spalding was the first of many Chicago aces, leading the city's 1876 club to an inaugural National League Pennant with a 46-12 record and a whopping 528 innings pitched. Among the legendary pitchers to follow were Larry Corcoran, owner of two no-hitters with the White Stocking dynasty of the 1880s; Clark Griffith, who had six 20-win seasons in a row for a mediocre Orphans/Colts club in the 1890s; and Rube Foster, who dominated the Negro leagues of the early twentieth century. Also featured are Mordecai Three Fingers Brown, Eddie Cicotte, Ed Walsh, Grover Cleveland Alexander, and many others. In Chicago Aces: The First 75 Years, readers will discover the compelling stories of these great pitchers, highlighted by over 100 rare and striking images.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - From early farming and industrial roots, St. Charles has developed into a city with strong cultural and leisure offerings. Its natural attractions, strong philanthropic presence, and a community vision sprung from hard work and commitment earn this western Chicago suburb the designation of All-American town. Author Costas Spirou guides readers through the city's 19th-century population explosion and industrialization that provided the economic fuel for the growth of culture and promotion of natural resources. During the 1920s and 1930s, St. Charles'location on the beautiful Fox River, advances in transportation, and significant construction projects such as the Hotel Baker and Arcada Theater further established the city's attraction to visitors.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Murphys is a bustling little town in the foothills--a town so popular that it won't be little for long. It's a favorite for weekend jaunts, and home to an eclectic group of people attracted by the natural surroundings, laid-back lifestyle, and, increasingly, world-class wineries. Originally named for the trading camp of John and Daniel Murphy, the area became a boomtown during the Gold Rush, and later hosted such notables as Mark Twain, Black Bart, Ulysses S. Grant, and Horatio Alger. Nearby, the majestic stands of redwood at Calaveras Big Trees State Park stand sentinel over the gullies and ranches of this area, which has changed much since the 1800s but still retains its compelling forested beauty. …

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Richmond County and the Seaboard Air Line Railway presents vintage photographs by talented photographer Frederick Frank Marchant (1872-1942). The images document the bustling railroad town of Hamlet and the county seat of Rockingham in North Carolina during the first quarter of the 20th century. Marchant, a native of Pennsylvania, arrived in Hamlet in the early 1900s. By 1907, he was working as a commercial photographer and as the official picture taker for the railroad company. Marchant developed a keen eye for interesting subjects, and some of his work took on a photojournalistic quality. His photographs, many of which he published as postcards, record rail activity in the Hamlet area, which became the hub of the Seaboard Air Line.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Jonesborough, as the oldest town in Tennessee, was once the capital of their own state, Franklin. Although that did not last, the history of this town was impactful in many of the important events of the young country.Originally established in 1779 as the seat of Washington County, North Carolina, Jonesborough is the oldest incorporated town in Tennessee. Early pioneers were given land grants to settle west of the mountains, but by 1784, they no longer trusted their political leaders in North Carolina. They created their own local government and established the state of Franklin, naming Jonesborough the original capital of the lost 14th state. Never recognized by Congress, Franklin eventually fizzled out and Tennessee was formed. Although Tennessee was a slave-holding state prior to the Civil War, Jonesborough produced the earliest regularly published periodical devoted to abolishing slavery. Today, Jonesborough is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with many buildings fully restored. In this volume, readers will see the Christopher Taylor House, which was built about 1778, and the Chester Inn, which hosted many famous guests in its original days, including Presidents Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, and James K. Polk.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - New York City was the original hotbed of baseball, so it is not surprising that fans in the five boroughs are very knowledgeable about the game. It did not take long after baseball was established in the city in the late 1850s for heavy hitters to rise in popularity. New York has continued to set the standard. When thinking about hitting, or better yet, smashing or crushing a baseball, the first team to come to mind is always the New York Yankees. Slugging was actually invented by the Yanks and was most prominently demonstrated by Babe Ruth. When Lou Gehrig joined the team in 1923, a one-two punch was established that set a standard seldom equaled in major-league history. Meanwhile, across the East River, the Giants manufactured lots of hitting, and the New York Nationals rattled the walls in the Polo Grounds. This book is a pictorial story of the sluggers that made history in New York, in both the American and National Leagues.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - An interesting history of Cleveland Heights, from its hamlet beginnings to its present-day suburbia.During its more than a century as a Cleveland suburb, Cleveland Heights has been shaped by the natural topography, technology, enterprising developers, elected officials, and its residents of many backgrounds. The result has been a rich mosaic of places and people. In the 1890s, wealthy Clevelanders began to leave the city's smoky factories and congested neighborhoods for the heights in East Cleveland Township. In 1901, the heights became the hamlet of Cleveland Heights. As its population changed, so did the suburb's homes, shops, schools, parks, and places of worship. Today, Cleveland Heights is as diversified as its citizens, its eclectic architecture and neighborhoods, and its unique history.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - What was once home to the native tribe known as the Ohlone, and functioning as guardian of the San Francisco Bay under Spanish, Mexican, and American flags, the Presidio has served as outpost as well as cultural barometer of the vast changes this country and the state of California have seen. For almost a century and a half, the U.S. military transformed these grounds into a logistical centerpiece for every American conflict and created a pioneering airfield for early flight experiments. The Presidio served as the headquarters for the Western Defense Command during World War II and until its closure in 1994. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area then embraced a unique opportunity to develop the Presidio into a mixed-use area where it once again became an influential icon as development tackled various social, cultural, and environmental issues to point northern California into a new century while simultaneously tracing this country's past.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Eliot's founding fathers came to Maine in search of prime fishing waters and abundant forests. Settlers traveled up the Piscataqua River for commercial purposes in the 1600s. Gristmills and most sawmills of the past gave way to latenineteenth-and early-twentieth-century vacation cottages, summer camps for both children and adults, and the cultural oasis of the Baha'I community. Renowned citizens have included war heroes, entrepreneurs, a prolific inventor, and a governor. Eliot tells the story of the growth of this historic Maine town through nearly two hundred vintage photographs.…

Neuware - In the first half of the twentieth century, the Cincinnati Reds--though only rarely dominant on the field--exerted considerable influence over the world of organized baseball. They returned to the Fall Classic in 1939 and 1940 without controversy, winning the championship in '40. This is the era of The Palace of the Fans and Crosley Field, of a 15-year-old pitcher turned Cincinnati legend, and of Hall of Famers Ed Roush, Eppa Rixey, and Ernie Lombardi.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Oregon, Ill., the administrative seat of Ogle County, lies midway between Rockford and Dixon. From its four state parks to Stronghold Castle, and from quiet tree-lined avenues to the regal Blackhawk statue, Oregon has long provided a haven for tourists, campers, boy scouts, church retreats, and artists: anyone seeking a unique taste of small town Midwestern life. In the early 1830s, pioneer John Phelps journeyed into the Rock River valley, eager to explore. He befriended Native Americans and enjoyed the land, but harbored no intent to stay. However, he wrote that these beautiful undulating and rich prairies left an impression on my memory that no time could erase. Thus, at the suggestion of surveyor Colonel William S. Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton, he built a cabin, planted a crop, and staked his claim. Others wisely followed Phelps, and have been following ever since. Through text and images, Oregon, Illinois seeks to chronicle the story of a most remarkable community whose rich heritage reaches back nearly to the founding of this nation. …

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - McDowell County was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1858, two years before the start of the American Civil War. In 1863, the county was one of the 55 that separated from the Old Dominion to form West Virginia, thus earning the nickname the Free State. Long before this, though, McDowell County was known for its bountiful natural resources; a great geologist, Dr. Thomas Walker, touted these vast coal lands after his 1748-1750 exploration. Political leaders like Thomas Jefferson, who knew of the county's mineral wealth, steered Robert Morris, financier of the American Revolution, to obtain all of McDowell County in the land speculation boom of the mid-1790s. After Morris was sent to debtor's prison in 1799, however, his land holdings were acquired by Michael Bouvier, a cabinet maker. In the 1920s, the remains of Bouvier's holdings were purchased by Henry Ford, the automobile tycoon. Other famous personalities associated with McDowell County include J.P. Morgan and Thomas Stonewall Jackson.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Johnson City area was originally settled in 1777 by pioneers from North Carolina with land grants who were dissatisfied with their representation in North Carolina. These local citizens held a convention and formed the state of Franklin in 1784. This state was never recognized by Congress. It fizzled out in 1788, and Tennessee was formed in 1796. More settlers came to the new state, but the area was destined to grow into a city when a combination of railroad connections in the area sparked growth during the late 19th century. In 1903, the creation of the National Soldiers Home brought disabled veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Civil War to Johnson City. Readers of this book will enjoy viewing photographs and reading about early residents, prominent homes, and historic buildings such as the East Tennessee Normal School, which opened in 1911. Many of the more than 200 photographs in this volume have never before been published.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Great Depression transformed Delaware more than any other event in the modern history of the state. Through vintage photographs, this volume records both the gentle philanthropy of the people and the crushing poverty experienced by 11,000 citizens left chronically unemployed for more than a decade. It portrays the balance between agriculture and industry that defines Delaware as a state. These images show a generation that was born during the 1918 flu epidemic, lived through the worst economic slump of the 20th century, and fought and won war against German fascism and Japanese imperialism. Images of America: Delaware in the Great Depression records the story of the extraordinary people who fundamentally changed the way politics, industry, conservation, and agriculture combine to build a society and how the technological revolutions in this small state helped lay the foundation for the modern world.…
