OCLC (No. 42674717) locates only one copy at institutions worldwide - at College of the Siskiyous Library in California. No date is listed in OCLC. ~III~ [1.5P] A book of spirit messages, principally from Sananda, recorded by Sister Thedra. 'The Association of Sananda and Sanat Kumara or A.S.S.K., was established by the one known as Sister Thedra, under the direct guidance of both Sananda and Sanat Kumara . Since her acceptance into the Brotherhood of the Seven Rays, over thirty years ago, Sister Thedra has recorded the communications, teachings and prophecies given to her by Sananda, Sanat Kumara, and many other Sibors or teachers of the higher realms and the Brotherhood of Light.' The author, Dorothy Martin from the Chicago area (also called Sister Thedra), was probably best known as the leader of The Seekers, also called The Brotherhood of the Seven Rays. The Seekers was a group of rapturists and a UFO religion which met in a nondenominational church, the group originally organized in 1953 by Charles Laughead, a staff member at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. They are believed to be the earliest UFO religion. Martin told her followers that the United States was going to be destroyed by a massive earthquake and huge tidal wave on December 21, 1954, according to telepathic messages that she claimed to have received from aliens. She called the aliens the Guardians and said they came from a planet called Clarion. Believers would be saved from the destruction by flying saucers that would take them to Clarion. The Seekers were the subject of the book When Prophecy Fails by Leon Festinger, in which Laughead was given the pseudonym Dr. Armstrong and Martin the name Marian Keech. Festinger infiltrated the Seekers with the goal of studying their cognitive reactions and coping mechanisms when their beliefs failed, a thought-process which Festinger named cognitive dissonance. It may seem absurdly obvious now that Festinger's phrase has become part of the vernacular, but in 1957, when he published A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, it was a revolutionary theory that would go onto influence the study not only of psychology, but politics, economics, and other fields. Martin fell off of Festinger's radar, spending several years in the Peruvian Andes, returning to the U.S. in the 1960s. By then known as 'Sister Thedra,' she founded the Association of Sananda and Samat Kumara in Mount Shasta, California ('long an attraction to America?s mystically minded'), where she found herself again reporting from the nether regions of space to a small group of believers. She died in 1992 in Sedona, Arizona, home of spiritual vortices and a thriving New Age tourist industry, at the ripe old age of 92. …
