This issue of (Večernie Ogni - "Evening Fires"), dated Saturday, 23 (10) March 1918, is an early-Soviet metropolitan daily reflecting the acute instability of Petrograd and Moscow during the first months following the Bolshevik consolidation of power. The paper combines official telegrams, urban reportage, political commentary, cultural criticism, and satirical illustration. Front-page political coverage is dominated by reports from the Council of People's Commissars (Sovet Narodnykh Komissarov). Central items include negotiations around armistice enforcement, food supply policy, anti-speculation measures, and the reorganization or dissolution of prerevolutionary military and naval institutions. The arrest of Admiral Razvozov is prominently reported, treated not as a legal anomaly but as a politically justified step in neutralizing the old officer class. A major portion of the paper covers internal security and repression, including arrests of political opponents, statements on revolutionary tribunals, and warnings against "counter-revolutionary agitation." The editorial tone is hard, procedural, and declarative, emphasizing inevitability rather than moral justification. Smaller notices demonstrate the daily operational burdens of the new regime: rationing, control of transport hubs, evacuation of offices, and reorganizations of courts and ministries. Regional reports ("Around the Provinces") describe unrest, shortages, collapse of local authority structures, and the uneven advance of Bolshevik control. Ukraine receives particular attention in the long analytical article, Na Ukrainé = "In Ukraine, which discusses peasant unrest, the fragility of revolutionary committees, and ongoing violence, framed as class struggle rather than national conflict. Urban coverage includes "Преступный Петроград", portraying Petrograd as plagued by crime, hunger, and moral disintegration. Criminality is depicted as a residue of the old order, now being methodically suppressed. Short notices report trials, executions, and confiscations with stark brevity. The cultural section features sharp literary criticism and an illustrated satirical centerpiece titled "Samson." The image reinterprets the biblical figure as a defeated, blind, and collapsed giant among pillars - clearly an allegory of the old imperial or bourgeois order brought low by revolutionary forces. Art and theater notices continue, though stripped of pre-war aesthetic exuberance, reflecting material scarcity and ideological vigilance. Sports results, theatrical schedules, and advertisements remain, but are reduced and ideologically neutralized. The newspaper still resembles a prerevolutionary metropolitan daily in structure, but its voice is unmistakably transitional: revolutionary authority is asserted everywhere, yet the chaos it claims to control is visible on every page.
