Generously illustrated with b&w "historical" views: cave people and Babylon get extensive treatment, and at rear is a multiple-panel fold-out with a very long line of time-conscious humans. Softbound in 8.5x6 inch wraps with gilt panels both sides, front cover in colors. Well-designed softback in good shape, marked only by a previous dealer's lightly penciled notes on first blank. Peculiar? -yes, but the stereotyped POV is all too familiar. Napoleon wore a pedometer watch, self-winding with his steps; the hand in vest possibly (but improbably) making sure it functioned. An Acknowledgment tacked into the Dedication leaf is to the 'directors of the Elgin National Watch Company for their manifold courtesies and assistance in the preparation of this book" - raising questions we could guess at, but will not. Elgin also introduced author Bailey to artists whose nice sketches illustrate this item, providing numerous views of filmy females in their youth and not much else.…

8vo, pp. 8, [4], [9]-225, [1] imprint of J. Young, Inverness; a sound copy in contemporary half roan over marbled boards, spine rubbed. First and only edition. Carey (1782-1824) was from Arbroath and moved first to Edinburgh (where he worked for Constable) and then to London, where he found employment writing political journalism. In 1807 he moved back to Scotland, to edit the Inverness Journal, and many of the poems in this volume clearly date from his time in the area: Craig Phadrig is a hill immediately to the west of Inverness: it has been supposed that it was here that St Columba met the pictish King Bridei in 565. Carey's poem is heavily footnoted, at times the notes occupying more of the page than the poem itself. Another poem is addressed to 'L. Macintosh, esq. of Raigmore', who had been in India, where he procured a 'liberal subscription' to the Inverness infirmary and school. Lachlan Macintosh (d. 1845) had returned from Calcutta in 1810, when he built a house (demolished in 1965), which is to the east of the town. This is Macintosh's copy: his name and arms are stencilled onto the upper endpaper.…

Elton Raymond Shaw was Chairman of the Prohibition State Committee of Ohio. The book, self-published, includes 23 poems on prohibition, charting the evil of alcohol, the heroic nature of the prohibitionist, the villainy of those who betray the cause. Octavo. Half-tone photographic portrait frontispiece. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Extremities a little bumped and rubbed, slight foxing to title page and toning to contents.
