This important source of information on music in England during the second and third quarters of the 17th century is written in a highly readable, idiosyncratic style, presented in three parts. The first discusses psalm singing and the music of the parochial and cathedral churches; the second, and major, part of the work is entitled The Lute made Easie, and discusses the choosing of an instrument, tuning, repairing, performing on, and composing for the lute, with extensive musical examples and works for performance in lute tablature; the third part concerns the viol and includes a discussion of performance practice of consort music.

Good complete working copy of this uncommon first edition. Harte's work, Ian Campbell Ross suggests [in The Shandean v.20, November 2009, p.9 et seq] was the source of several Shandean elements - from his early reflections on the difficulty of writing his book and his use of digression through to his reference to the Abbess of Quedlingberg - and though debate continues as to the precise influence Harte's work may have had, the analogues are quite striking in a book published precisely when Sterne was working on the first two volumes of Tristram Shandy. Complete copy of this fascinating set. ESTC T139678.

In one town the locals decided that it would be fun to throw stones at the troups and only stopped their sport when the use of guns were threatened. Croker writes in detail about the food and wine and is also very observant of the interest the Spanish men pay to the English women that travel with the soldiers. Ajouter au panier4to, pp. [iv], 20; a little browned, and last leaf dusty; in modern wrappers. First edition of what is effectively a posthumous oratorio by Handel: this work was put together a few years after his death (he had died in 1759), using his music and versifying appropriate biblical texts, in the manner of works completed by Handel du…ring his lifetime. It has been suggested that the author of this was Edward Toms, about whom little is known, except that he did assist in the compilation of a similar oratorio, adapted by Samuel Arnold from music by Handel, and titled Omnipotence, in 1773. The leaf of preface in this copy has been partly obscured: the last of three paragraphs, which appeals for subscribers to an unnamed charity, has been blanked out by a piece of paper, pasted over intentionally, at the time of publication. It is not obvious what the charity can be: presumably it is not the Foundling Hospital, for which Handel worked so much in his lifetime, as the text refers to the 'Claims of Widows and Orphans'. Nor, of course, is it clear why the appeal has been deliberately obscured. In some copies of this book, page 15 is misnumbered 14, but the pagination is correct in this copy.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. 5 X 8". 196 plus probably another 50 or so pages. This is an interesting book. I believe there are four books depending on what you call a book. There is a prologue to the book about the window and a long list of the people who paid to have the window made. And a book about Judas Iscariot. an…d a one page book about the History of the Ancient Militia in Yorkshire. This full calf volume has full gilt edges but the front board is cracked free from the spine. There is a large folding picture of the window. My guess is that this was all put together in the early nineteenth century and bound up, judging from the fancy binding. Maybe a little earlier. Terrible printing on most of this stuff. Great for people who know York Cathedral. Visit Barbers Book Store in down town Fort Worth where we have been selling interesting books since 1925.

Ajouter au panier4to, pp. 26; disbound. First revised edition. This is a poem by an amateur poet who, in other editions (probably preceding this one), identified himself as 'William Carter, late Lieutenant of the 40th Regiment of Foot'. His only other publication is a pamphlet on the movements of the British and American armies during 1775-6, wh…ich must indicate that he had seen service there during the war of independence. Four printings of this poem, which give his name (and which have been tentatively dated to around 1780), are in octavo and are slightly different in text: they were printed for the author, and offered at 5 shillings, surely a very ambitious price. Perhaps they did not sell very well at any rate, they are now extremely uncommon. But Carter clearly revised the poem for this quarto edition, which he must have hoped would reach a greater and perhaps more influential public, and it certainly may have had some success, as it was republished by Flexney in 1785, with further alterations to the text. ESTC locates three copies in Britain, and eight in the USA.
