8vo. (7 1/4 x 4 5/8 inches). 160pp. Woodcut frontispiece view of Sloan's Books and Medicine depot. Cattle Doctor with separate title but continuous pagination. Original publisher's roan-backed lettered boards, worn but completely readable. Scarce early edition, by "the first patent medicine 'King' of Chicago" As he was approachi…ng his ninetieth year, Sloan felt that it was his duty to write the present work and share his knowledge from his years of experience as a farrier to benefit his "fellow creatures". Intended as a practical tool from its conception, Sloan wrote the work in plain language so that it could benefit the "poor man's horse". The work includes a wide range of materials from guidance in choosing a horse, numerous remedies for common equine and bovine maladies, helpful hints on making cheese and butter, as well as directions on riding. As Byrd suggests, Sloan's "cures for man and beast were sold widely in the West"; many reviews of his ointments are included in the rear. An important early American veterinary guide and an unusual imprint. Byrd 1314, 1432 (note); Henderson, pp. 162-163, 222-223; Not in Sabin, Eberstadt, Decker.
Edité par Second Edition, Revised, Printed by W. Bowyer & J. Nichols, for S. Baker, G. Leigh and B. White, 1769. A nice clean tall copy. Thomas Hocken's copy with his bookplate and signature. UPCOTT 'A Bibliographical Account fof the Principal Works relating to English Topography' pp 82-86., 1769

8vo. 6 x 9.25 inches. [4] + 611 - 1366 + [46] pp. List of Books and Index. Bound in full calf with gilt borders to boards; spine rebacked in compartments with raised bands, elaborately decorated gilt with contrasting black morocco title labels, gilt. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Some wear to extremities and light foxing… to the plate margins as always but otherwise a very good clean copy. Armourial bookplate of R. Westly Hall Dare. Illustrated by 33 engraved copperplates, including frontispiece and by engraved vignette title. This is volume eight of a vast twenty five volume work which was a reaction to the picturesque movement of the late eighteenth century, when for the first time the history and antiquities of these Isles became a respectable study, as opposed to the classical antiquities of Greece and Rome. Brayley (1773-1854) with his friend and collaborator, John Britton (1771-1857) visited nearly every town and principal place in the county, obtained original communications from local contributors and extracted all relevant information from previous publications. The lists of works of art in country house collections are the first listings of art treasures in Kent and are a most important record of the whereabouts of major paintings, etc. at that period. The descriptions of parish churches are also important is as they were before the restoration mania which gripped the Victorians. It also contains an interesting list of books written on Kent which still has some value. Copy from the library of Robert Westly Hall-Dare (1789-1836), army officer and MP for South Essex, 1832-36, born in Demerara, now Guyana. A very good example, difficult to find in good condition.
