The Dust Jacket is flawless - uniformly bright and fully intact. See the photos. xxxiv, 585 pages, including introductory essays about Theodore Dreiser and This Edition, and a Checklist of Illustrations. 5 1/2" x 7 1/2". This novel was originally published in 1900. Despite the fact that this is a 1997 publication from Doubleday, it is the first commercial publication of the unexpurgated text. Back in 1900, the wife of Frank Doubleday read a draft of the text and was scandalized by the "looseness" of Carrie, and probably by the unromantic manner in which Dreiser presented her story. As a result, a bowdlerized version was published with only 1700 copies, of which only 456 copies sold. So, for the next 80 years, the original text lay unread in the New York Public Library. Then a researcher found it and in 1981 a scholarly copy of the text made its appearance. Finally Doubleday eventually got interested again. So here is the text intended by the author.
