Its devastating central argument is this: the Nazis did not rule by terror and terror rarely touched the lives of most ordinary Germans. The terror apparatus at the dark heart of Nazi Germany, set in motion by the Nazi Party leadership in Berlin, employed a selective terror that concentrated almost exclusively on Jews and other specifically targeted enemies of the Nazi regime. It depended for its implementation and effectiveness, however, on the cooperation and often voluntary participation at the local level of the broad mass of ordinary German citizens who themselves suffered little or not at all from Nazi terror. A small but growing contingent of historians of Nazi Germany have begun to view the Gestapo not as an omnipresent organ of terror but as a relatively small organization with few officers and few spies, reliant on the complicity of a meek and "ordinary" German population that largely policed itself: Not until now, however, have these provocative and controversial claims been so convincingly and thoroughly substantiated. By focusing on the role of the individual and on the role of society in making terror work, Johnson is able to definitively and dramatically answer such questions as these: Who were the Gestapo officers? Were they merely banal paper shufflers, as Hannah Arendt depicted Eichmann, or were they hideously and recognizably evil? What tactics did they use? What was it like to be arrested and interrogated by them? Were they motivated by an eliminationist antiSemitism? Did the average German know about the mass murder of Jews and other "undesirables" while it was happening? Exactly how was Nazi terror applied in the daily lives of ordinary Jews and Germans? Johnson spent five years researching in Gestapo and justice archives in three Rhineland communities ~ Cologne, Krefeld and Bergheim ~ reading and analyzing more than 1,100 Gestapo and "special court" case files. He conducted surveys and interviews with German perpetrators, Jewish victims and ordinary Germans who experienced the Third Reich at first hand. Nazi Terror examines more than one thousand individual cases of persecution pertaining to the entire spectrum of people who suffered from Nazi terror~Jews, Communists, Socialists, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, clergymen, the disabled and others. It deals in flesh and blood narratives~sometimes quite graphically~as well as in facts and statistics to tell the story of how the terror~perhaps the defining characteristic of the Nazi dictatorship~was imposed by the Gestapo and tolerated by ordinary Germans. These gripping, shocking and powerful firsthand accounts take the reader into the very heart of darkness: inside the Gestapo headquarters where the victims of Nazi terror were tortured and interrogated. Consequently, Johnson's book is able to settle many nagging questions about who, exactly, was responsible for what, who knew what and when they knew it. Destined to become the classic study of terror during the Nazi dictatorship and the benchmark for the next generation of Nazi and Holocaust scholarship, Eric Johnson's Nazi Terror.

In this book the author makes a sincere attempt to describe to a popular audience the content behind seven mathematical problems that were chosen by a private foundation called "The Clay Institute" as being deep enough to warrant a prize of $1,000,000 for their solution. The author does an admirable job of achieving this goal; the book will be of inestimable value to those who are curious about the history and content behind these problems. The author is aware of the difficulty in describing the content of the problems to readers without substantial mathematical preparation, and he does a good job. One can of course think of many other problems that fit the stature of the millennium problems, such as the invariant subspace conjecture, or developing a complete mathematical model of the cell, but these seven will no doubt spark the curiosity of a few young persons as they further their studies in mathematics. Some of the millennium problems, such as the Riemann hypothesis, the NP problem, the Poincare conjecture, and the Navier-Stokes equations, require only an undergraduate education. The others definitely require more background, just to understand even the statement of the problem. All of the them are fascinating, and will no doubt stimulate some incredibly interesting mathematical constructions and an adventure that could fill a lifetime.

Literally, Cape Horn is a buttressed pyramid of crumbly rock, standing 425 meters above the sea at the very bottom of South America~55 degrees 59 minutes south by 67 degrees 16 minutes west. Metaphorically, however, Cape Horn stands for me ultimate in ocean violence. There is no other land to the east, none to the west~all the way around the world. To the south, there is only Antarctica. The water in between rises up in chaos when Force 10 storms roll in from the west. For centuries, to round the Horn stood as the supreme test of sailors and ships. It still does. While treacherous conditions were enough to secure its place in legend, a geographical accident secured its place in history. From the Arctic Circle to the sub~Antarctic, there is no natural break in the continental coastlines through which big ships could sail, except at Cape Horn. Western explorers and merchants, daredevils and missionaries, long sought to master the Cape, their will for profit and dominance wreaking havoc on those already there~an indigenous (and unclothed) population of marine nomads called the Yahgan, one of the simplest cultures ever to live on earth. In the austral autumn of 2000, aboard a 53~ foot steel sloop called Pelagic, Dallas Murphy sailed down by the Horn. He weaves stories of his own nautical adventures together with tales of those who braved Cape Horn before him, from Francis Drake to Charles Darwin, and breathtaking descriptions of the surrounding wilderness. The result is a beautifully crafted, immensely enjoyable expedition.

Tens of millions of spiritual seekers summon his name and example. But the real Francis~both his complicated personality and his complex theology~have been misunderstood for centuries. In 1228, Pope Gregory IX rushed to canonize St. Francis only two years after his death. Soon thereafter, the Church eliminated significant aspects his biography from the public record. For Francis' early of life was defined by his profligacy; shortly before dying, Francis himself warned his brothers: "Don't be too quick to canonize me. I am perfectly capable of fathering a child." In A Mended and Broken Heart, religion scholar Wendy Murray slices through the bowdlerized version of Francis' life promoted within the Catholic tradition and reveals instead a saint who was in every way a real man. Murray stresses in particular the crucial but completely neglected role that Clare of Assisi played in Francis' life and theology, both before and after his conversion. A profoundly humane portrait of a misunderstood saint, A Mended and Broken Heart makes a powerful case that St. Francis' life and thought make him a role model for religious seekers of every faith.

The same influential people seem to reappear time after time in different professional guises, pressing their own agendas in one venue after another. According to award~winning public policy scholar and anthropologist Janine Wedel, these are the powerful "shadow elite," the main players in a vexing new system of power and influence. In this groundbreaking book, Wedel charts how this shadow elite, loyal only to their own, challenge both governments' rules of accountability and business codes of competition to accomplish their own goals. From the Harvard economists who helped privatize post~Soviet Russia and the neoconservatives who have helped privatize American foreign policy ( culminating with the debacle that is Iraq) to the many private players who daily make public decisions without public input, these manipulators both grace the front pages and operate behind the scenes. Wherever they maneuver, they flout once~sacrosanct boundaries between state and private. Profoundly original, Shadow Elite gives us the tools we need to recognize these powerful yet elusive players and comprehend the new system. Nothing less than our ability for self~government and our freedom are at stake.

The campaign has targeted the disease and left off the table the things that cause it~tobacco, alcohol, the workplace, and other environmental hazards. Conceived in explicitly military terms, the effort has focused on defeating an enemy by detecting, treating, and curing disease. Overlooked and suppressed was any consideration of how the world in which we live and work affects whether we get cancer. The result is appalling: over 10 million preventable cancer deaths over the past thirty years. This has been no accident. The official cancer effort was directed by leaders of industries that generated a host of cancer~causing materials and products. Their economic interest lay in making the disease less deadly but never in preventing it altogether. The Secret History of the War on Cancer shows, decade by decade, how this leadership acted to downplay research on prevention, and kept research on environmental causes from gaining wide~spread circulation or benefiting the general public and how this suppression of knowledge continues today. Filled with compelling personalities and never~before~revealed information, this is the story of a major public health effort diverted and distorted for private gain, at a cost of millions of lives.

"how to stop time is the little black dress of dope books. Smart, sleek and savagely subtle, Ms. Marlowe is the most gifted druggie to pop out of Harvard since the late Timothy Leary." ~Jerry Stahl.~ "Cultural criticism masquerading as a heroin memoir masquerading as a dictionary, how to stop time looks at American society through the lens of heroin use. Weaving personal history with aphorisms and analysis, Ann Marlowe is unsparing in her exploration of her, and society's, obsession with heroin addiction. This is no glamorization of "heroin chic," no cautionary tale about the irresistable power of the drug, no cliched memoir of degradation and ecstasy. Instead, Marlowe delves beneath the surface of addiction, offering many startling insights into the nature of nostalgia and the love of predictable experience on the one hand and craving the validation ~ of danger on the other; about suburban childhood, and striving to remake yourself. How to stop time is the first book to examine heroin in relation to our cynical, post~consumer society, and the first to explain the profound nostalgia that powers both addiction and our age. Stepping in beside the likes of William S. Burroughs, Jim Carroll and Thomas De Quincey, Ann Marlowe's how to stop time is sure to become one of the classics of addiction literature.".

American Babylon, the last work by eminent theologian Richard John Neuhaus examines the senses in which that sentiment holds particularly true for Christians in America today. Christians are by definition a people out of place. In this life short of the promised Kingdom of God, they are alien citizens. This inherent sense of alienation is compounded in America, a country that advertises itself a nation under God but is gravely marked by decadence, consumerism, and other distractions from our eternal destiny. Neuhaus brought his formidable intellect and imagination to bear on the quandaries of Catholic America in its time of testing. Precisely because we know that ours is a time and place of exile, we are sustained by unconquerable hope, knowing that we have not the reason and we have not the right to despair of our moment in the American Babylon. Deeply learned, frequently provocative, and always eloquent, American Babylon is a major statement of a major Christian thinker charting the path of faithfulness for dual citizens determined to be loyal both to their place of exile and to their promised destination in the New Jerusalem.

Mary Surratt, a Confederate sympathizer, ran the boardinghouse in Washington where the conspirators, including her rebel son, John Surratt, met to plan the assassination. The depth of Surratt's complicity in the assassination of President Lincoln has been debated since the day she was arrested on April 17, 1865, three days after John Wilkes Booth murdered Lincoln as he sat watching a play at Ford's Theatre. Less than three months after her arrest, Mary Surratt would hang. The military tribunal that found her guilty never doubted their decision, but five of the nine commissioners petitioned President Andrew Johnson, Lincoln's successor, to show mercy because of her sex and age. President Johnson, however, was unmoved, convinced that Surratt "kept the nest that hatched the egg." Based on long~lost interviews, confessions, and court testimony, this book reveals Mary's deep complicity in the murder plot, and explores how Mary's actions defied nineteenth~century norms of femininity, piety, and motherhood, leaving her vulnerable to deadly punishment historically reserved for men. A riveting narrative account of sex, espionage, and murder cloaked in the enchantments of Southern womanhood, The Assassin's Accomplice offers a fresh perspective on America's most famous murder.

It tells how, for seventeen years, he lived a hand~to~mouth existence outside Russia, working towards the upheaval that in 1917 transformed the global political landscape: the Russian Revolution. Constantly watched by the secret police, Lenin and his cohorts were dependent on the protection of a shadowy network of like~minded friends and supporters. Penniless, yet driven, they took huge risks to publish and smuggle back into Russia the illegal literature that spread their message. Lenin was always on the move between the great cities of Europe ~ Paris, London, Geneva, Brussels, and Munich ~ and the rural backwaters of Finland and Poland. He led an uncertain life, often under assumed names, frequently short of food, and often having to flee at a moment's notice. Russian historian Helen Rappaport's riveting account describes Lenin's triumphs and the many conflicts, personal and political, he had with those who shared his exile. She paints a vivid portrait of Russian emigre life and of how Lenin and the Bolsheviks worked to achieve his vision of a Soviet social democracy. She also explores the toll that their extraordinary existence took not just on Lenin but on the loyal group that surrounded him, and particularly on the women in his life: his long~suffering wife, Nadezhda Krupskaya; his mother~in~law; and his mistress, Inessa Armand; as well as his mother and sisters back home. Alive with fascinating detail and new material from rare and previously overlooked sources, Conspirator offers an unrivalled portrait of Lenin in the making.

PETERSBURG has encompassed all that Russians are and all hope to become. Home to Peter and Catherine The Great, it provided creative sustenencve to Dostoevskii, Rimskii~Korsakov, Pavlova And Nizhinskii, Faberge, Gogol, and even Joseph Brodsky. Althoughj St. Petersburg has played a role in many histories of Russia, until now there has been n definitive history of the city and all its elements. In this stunning and lavish biography of St. Petersburg, W. Bruce Lincoln captures all of the city's opulence and artistic brilliance, blended with images of power, suffering and monumental heroism. Climate and comfort were not what Peter the Great had in mind when he decided to build a new capital in the muddy marshes of the Neva River delta in the spring of 1703. Barely 500 miles below the Arctic Circle and easily submerged by the tides that flowed upriver from the Gulf of Finland, the region saw snow as ea.rly as September and as late as May. Its foul weather, bad water and low lying sodden soil made it so unattractive that only a handful of Finnish fisherman had ever bothered to settle there. Yet to the Tsar, the place he named Sankt Pieter Burkh had the makings of a "paradise." And like Russia Itself, Peter's new capital became a place of startling contrasts. Bathed in sunlight at midnight in the summer, it brooded in darkness at noon in the winter and its canals froze solid at least five months of every year. St. Petersburg was closer to London, Paris, and Vienna than to Russia's faroff eastern lands, but it quickly became the political, cultural, and economic center of an empire that stretched across more than a dozen time zones and over three continents. A European capital of an Asiatic nation, St. Petersburg eventually became a model of what Russia ought to become, and the Russians embraced everything it represented. Not since the Roman Empire has a city stood so completely for the realm it ruled. Lincoln's epic history of St. Petersburg is, inevitably, also a history of modern Russia. Sunlight at Midnight is a tale of men and women struggling against the awesome forces of nature, backwardness, and repression to create the triumphs in politics, culture, and science that make up the 300~year history of St. Petersburg. Lincoln peoples his brilliant look at St. Petersburg with revolutionaries and laborers who brush shoulders with tsars, and with builders, soldiers, and statesmen who share a sense of place with poets. By depicting the entire historical experience of this magnificent and mysterious city ~ the power, the heroism, the fortitude ~ Lincoln reveals the wealth of human and natural forces that shaped its history and that of the Russia it once ruled.

It was a moment of astonishing radicalism in European thought, so uncompromising and bold that it was viciously opposed by rival philosophers such as Voltaire and the turncoat Rousseau, and finally suppressed by Robespierre and his Revolutionary henchmen. This climactic moment in Western history has largely been forgotten by historians who have looked no further than what the official version of events showed. In A Wicked Company, acclaimed historian Philipp Blom retraces the fortunes and characters of this exceptional group of friends and brings to life their startling ideas. Brilliant minds of wit, courage, and humanity, their thinking created a different and radical French Enlightenment based on atheism, passion, empathy, and a compellingly insightful perspective on society. A startlingly relevant work of narrative history, A Wicked Company forces us to confront with new eyes the foundational debates about modern society and its future.

For many Americans, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's role in leading the United States throughout most of World War II has made him one of America's most venerated presidents. Biographers have all but lionized FDR for his war leadership, a tendency that has been reinforced lately as Americans celebrate the riches of memory by saluting the generation that won that titanic global conflict with blockbuster movies and bestselling books. But, as Thomas Fleming reminds us, memory is not history, and in The New Dealers' War, he reveals an entirely different Roosevelt from the one that most people like to remember. Starting with the leak to the press of Roosevelt's famous Rainbow Plan~for which Fleming blames Roosevelt himself, as a way of manipulating Hitler into a declaration of war against the US~then spiraling back to FDR's inept prewar diplomacy with Japan and his various duplicities in luring Japan into an attack on the US Fleet in the Pacific, Fleming takes us on a journey through the incredibly fractious struggles and debates that went on in Washington, the nation, and the world as FDR and his fellow New Dealers strove to impose their will on the conduct of the War. At the center, however, is Roosevelt, a president waging a global war, a leader in remorseless decline, battered by ideological forces and primitive hatreds which he frequently failed to understand, often leading to disastrous consequences. Among these was his insistence on "unconditional surrender" for Germany and Japan, which he announced at the 1943 Casablanca summit conference. Winston Churchill was "dumbfounded" and Dwight Eisenhower, George Marhsall and virtually every other high~ranking officer in the British and American high command were appalled. The policy doomed the hopes of the German Resistance for a coup d'etat that would have ended the war in 1943, saving millions of lives. No one in England or America was even dimly aware of the existence of this "Front of Decent People" because FDR had forbidden any mention of them in the media. Equally unpublicized was the awful fate of Europe's Jews, about which the New Dealers did little but wring their hands. Meanwhile, Roosevelt and his inner circle embraced Soviet Russia's dictator, Josef Stalin, not merely as a badly needed wartime ally, but as a benevolent partner in the postwar world. In doing so, they suppressed the story of the Katyn Massacre and ignored evidence that Stalin had Soviet agents at the highest levels of the American government. Unquestionably, The New Dealers' War is one of those rare books that will force readers to rethink what they think they know about one of the most pivotal events in the American past. It will surely spark debate about FDR's role in shaping the course of history in the twentieth century.

The American Revolution, has again taken the seemingly familiar in American history and breathed new and revelatory life into it. This time, through the lives and ambitions of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, the author transports us into the post~revolutionary world of 1804, a chaotic and fragile period in the young country and a time of tremendous global instability. Compressing his narrative into the final year of Hamilton's life, Fleming, with a master tragedian's sense of the inevitable and an historian's eye for new and startling insights, recounts the dramatic events that led up to Hamilton and Burr's fateful, fatal encounter. At first glance, Hamilton and Burr would seem to be men who shared a unique understanding and sympathy. Both were proud veterans of the War for Independence and extremely sensitive about their honor. Both were passionate politicians, leading figures in their respective parties. Both lived in splendid mansions and were saddled with enormous debts. Both were dogged by lurid rumors ~largely true~ about their extramarital sexual exploits. Yet in these very similarities can be found the stresses that caused a rift between them. Their differences only widened the breach: Hamilton's illegitimate birth in the West Indies (John Adams called him "the bastard brat of a Scotch pedlar"), Burr the son of a Princeton president and grandson of the great Puritan divine, Jonathan Edwards; Hamilton's son, Philip, killed in a duel, a shock that drove Hamilton's gifted daughter, Angelica, insane, while Burr enjoyed an intense relationship with his beautiful unhappy daughter, Theodosia, living in South Carolina with a husband she married only to give Burr access to his power and wealth; Hamilton's political isolation after the Federalist party fell from power, Burr's ascendancy as vice president under Jefferson, a man despised by Hamilton. Add to this volatile mix President Jefferson's secret enmity for Burr and his decision to destroy him with the help of New York's patronage~hungry political boss DeWitt Clinton. At least as combustible was the looming figure of the "New Caesar"~Napoleon Bonaparte. The rise of this Man of Destiny fed both Hamilton and Burr's political fantasies at a time when many politicians were talking secession and the probable collapse of Jefferson's government. Their mutual hunger for fame proved the final strain between the two ex~soldiers, convincing them that the outcome of their contest would determine the fate of the American republic. Tangled in a web of regret, anger, desperation and ambition, the two men were driven almost inexorably to their murderous confrontation in Weehawken, New Jersey. Duel is narrative history at its most authoritative, and authoritative history at its most readable. Once again Thomas Fleming has shown himself to be a stylist of first rank and a master historian, uniquely capable of finding the deeply human core at the heart of the defining events of our nation's past.
