Internal binding is good and text pages are tight, no previous owner signatures or bookplates, no library markings. Front end page has a dark spot in the upper right corner and what appears to be something scribbled out in pencil and then was later erased. Exploring Expediton, 1839-1842. He was the first to use astronomical instruments for observation; he was also the first to name and chart the Antarctic continent. In 1841, he was commanded to explore the Northwestern Coast of America, including the Columbia River, and the coast of California, with special reference to the Bay of San Francisco. Wilkes' report, first published in 1845, (Howes W-414; Streeter VI, 3324), may have been the first published account describing parts of California, in particular, that part which now comprises the north/south area traversed by Highway 99.…

His earlier book - DECK AND PORT; OR, INCIDENTS OF A CRUISE IN THE UNITED STATES FRIGATE CONGRESS - was an interesting narrative of a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia in October of 1845, to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and ending at California about nine months later. Ferguson, a gold miner originally from Ohio. Ferguson gives a detailed narrative about his journey from Ohio to California's gold fields and recollects many harrowing parts that happened along the way. He describes the generally trying circumstances of overland travel and narrowly escaping an attack by members of a Northern California tribe. According to Joseph A. Sullivan in his Foreword, "[Ferguson's account] is a well-written document of a most picturesque section of the mines.
