The main topic is the Hermitian classgroup of orders, and in particular of group rings. Most of this work is published here for the first time. The primary motivation came from the connection with the Galois module structure of rings of algebraic integers. The principal aim was to lay the theoretical basis for attacking what may be called the 'converse problem' of Galois module structure theory: to express the symplectic local and global root numbers and conductors as algebraic invariants. A previous edition of these notes was circulated privately among a few collaborators. Based on this, and following a partial solution of the problem by the author, Ph. Cassou-Nogues and M. Taylor succeeded in obtaining a complete solution. In a different direction J. Ritter published a paper, answering certain character theoretic questions raised in the earlier version. I myself disapprove of 'secret circulation', but the pressure of other work led to a delay in publication; I hope this volume will make amends. One advantage of the delay is that the relevant recent work can be included. In a sense this is a companion volume to my recent Springer-Ergebnisse-Bericht, where the Hermitian theory was not dealt with. The application of DNA finger printing to forensic and legal medicine has guaranteed a high public profile for this technology, and indeed, scarcely a week goes by with out the press reporting yet another crime successfully solved by molec ular genetics. Less spectacularly, but equally importantly, DNA typing methods are steadily diffusing into an ever wider set of applications and research fields, ranging from medicine through to conservation biology. To date, two DNA fingerprinting workshops have been held in the UK, one in 1988 organised by Terry Burke at the University of Leicester, and the second in 1989 at the University of Nottingham, co-ordinated by David Parkin. Nondeterminism plays a major role in formal language theory; in programming it serves for delaying design decisions in program development and occurs in a 'natural' way in formalisations of distributed processes. Heinrich Hussmann presents an elegant extension of equational specification and term rewriting to include nondeterminism. Based on a clean modeltheoretic semantics he considers term rewriting systems without confluence restrictions as a specification language and shows that fundamental properties such as the existence of initial models or the soundness and completeness of narrowing, the basic mechanism for executing equational specifications, can be extended to nondeterministic computations. Their existence was implied by Fatt and Katz in 1952, when they described the action of acetylcholine at the muscle endplate as producing 'a large nonselective increase of ion permeability, i.e. a short circuit'. The classical anti-histamines, now known as H -antagonists have 1 been the result of intensive research in the 1950s and 1960s. The new, so-called non-sedating H1-antagonists, which became available in the 1980s, could be d'eveloped mainly due to insights into structural features causing the sedating effects of the older compounds. In the 1970s the H2-receptors became important targets for developing new anti-ulcer agents. The H2-antagonist story is a stimulating example of modern research on pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. Unknown and new properties of histamine and histaminergic systems came to the attention of the pharmacologists and medicinal chemists in the 1980s. The role of histamine as a neurotransmitter, the existence of a presynaptic receptor (H ) controlling the release of histamine 3 and other neurotransmitters, and the particular character of this receptor became important as the possibilities to design new therapeutic agents were realized. As we see huge efforts mounting all over the developed world to understand the structure and organization of several complex eukaryotic genomes in the form of Gene Projects and Genome Centers, we have to remember that without understanding the basic mechanisms that gov ern the use of genetic information, much of this effort will not be very productive. Fortunately, however, research during the past seven years on the mechanisms that control gene expression in eukaryotes has been extremely successful in generating a wealth of information on the basic strategies of transcriptional control. (Although regulation of gene ex pression is exerted at many different levels, much of the emphasis in this series will be on transcriptional control. A future volume, however, will deal with other levels of regulation). This volume contains a sample of the papers presented at the Workshop. All the papers have been refereed. Gaussian processes have been studied extensively over the last fifty years and form the bedrock of stochastic modeling. Their importance stems from the Central Limit Theorem. They share a number of special properties which facilitates their analysis and makes them particularly suitable to statistical inference. The many properties they share, however, is also the seed of their limitations. As early as 1958, he proposed that the application of operations research methods be initiated in industrial production. With his students, Yu Ming-I, Wan Zhe Xian and Wang Yuan, Professor Hua visited various transportation departments to promote mathematical methods for dealing with transportation problems, and a mass campaign was organized by them and other mathematicians to advance and apply linear programming methods to industrial production in Beijing and in Shandong province. However, due to the fact that these methods have limited applications and their computation is rather complex, their popularization and utilization in China have so far been restricted to a small number of sectors such as the above mentioned transportation departments. In 1958 Hua Loo--Keng proposed the use of Input-Output methods in the formulation of national economic plans. Apart from publicizing this method, he carried out in-depth research on the subject. The workshop was jointly sponsored by the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce (Australia), and the Na tional Science Foundation (USA) under the US-Australia agreement. Biological systems are typically hard to study mathematically. This is particularly so in the case of systems with strong interconnections, such as ecosystems or networks of neurons. In the past few years there have been substantial improvements in the mathematical tools available for study ing complexity. Theoretical advances include substantially improved un derstanding of the features of nonlinear systems that lead to important behaviour patterns such as chaos. Practical advances include improved modelling techniques, and deeper understanding of complexity indicators such as fractal dimension. Game theory is now playing an increasingly important role in under standing and describing evolutionary processes in interconnected systems. The strategies of individuals which affect each other's fitness may be incor porated into models as parameters. Strategies which have the property of evolutionary stabilty result from particular parameter values which may be the main feature of living determined using game theoretic methods. Since systems is that they evolve, it seems appropriate that any model used to describe such systems should have this feature as well.
