Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. These are the written notes of Fermi's Lectures supported by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and given at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa during March-April 1973. We propose to discuss here certain spectral properties of Schroedinger operators H=-D+V(x) (D the Laplacian and V a potential) which have application to scattering theory. We consider an operator H with potential V of class SR. We show that the positive point spectrum of H is a discrete set in R+. Eigenfunctions which correspond to positive eigenvalues are shown to decay rapidly. This property is shown to hold also for generalized eigenfunctions. We then establish the limiting absorbing principle, which is a basic tool in our study. These are the written notes of Fermi's Lectures supported by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and given at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa during March-April 1973. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The subject of this thesis is the Mu-calculus, which nowadays represents a very active research area in both theoretical and practical Computer Science. The Mu-calculus is a logic capable of expressing least and greatest solutions of fixpoint equations x=f(x), where f is a monotone function mapping some complete ordered set into itself. The thesis has two goals, one expository and one technical. The expository goal is to present some results and problems about the Mu-calculus. On the technical respect, this thesis addresses a specific expressiveness problem of the Mu-calculus, the alternation depth hierarchy problem. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In this thesis we deal with the models of subspace arrangements introduced by De Concini and Procesi. In particular we study their integer cohomology rings, which are torsion free Z-modules of which we find Z-bases. When the considered arrangement is the braid hyperplane arrangement, this leads to the study of the integer cohomology rings of the moduli spaces of n-pointed curves of genus 0 and of their Mumford-Deligne compactifications. We deal with the action of the symmetric group on the cohomology rings: we give explicit formulas for the associated generalized Poincare series, and provide recursive formulas for the characters. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Cp20 is a neuronal protein involved in the molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. Cp20 was first identified in the CNS of the marine snail Hermissenda, which can be trained to learn an association between visual and vestibular stimuli in a Pavlovian conditioning procedure. Upon learning, cp20 is phosphorylated in a few defined neurons of Hermissenda, and inhibits the Ca2+-dependent K+ channels. This results in an increase in membrane resistence and therefore a hyperexcitability of the neuronal pathway. Similar biochemical mechanisms have been proposed to underlie memory in higher species, such as rabbit and rat. Cp20 was isolated from squid optic lobes by a 5-step purification. The protein was cloned, fused with an oligohistidine tail, and expressed in Esterichia coli. The activation of PKC, the enzyme responsible for cp20 phosphorylation, was also studied by an in vivo imaging system. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Neuronal plasticity is the term generally used to describe a great variety of changes in neuronal structure and functions, in particular activity-dependent, prolonged functional changes, accompanied by corresponding biochemical and possibly morphological alterations. The first insights about neuronal plasticity have been obtained on simple forms of life. Today, many areas in the mammalian central nervous system are under investigation, in particular the cortex and the hippocampus. In these areas, neuronal plasticity is considered to be at the basis of learning and memory. The study of brain plasticity in sensory systems has been particularly fruitful, because these systems can be experimentally manipulated in a very precise manner by changes in the sensory imput. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Low energy neutrino astrophysics studies the evolutionary life of the stars via the neutrinos emitted during the quiescent phase (solar neutrinos) and during the explosive death of big mass stars (supernova neutrinos). The neutrino mean free path in matter is about twenty orders of magnitude greater than that of light; therefore neutrinos reaching us can be produced also in deep and high-density levels of stars. Since massless neutrinos are unaffected by their travel in the interstellar space, their energies and arrival directions carry information on the star history. The subject of this thesis is the search for neutrino bursts from galactic stellar gravitational collapses performed in the MACRO experiment, a large area modular detector, operating since autumn 1989. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Since neutrinos interact so weakly with matter, most of their basic properties are still largely unknown. One of the most important issues to be settled concerns their rest mass. We have no idea why neutrinos are so much lighter than their charged lepton partners; no fundamental symmetry in nature requires massless neutrinos. Massive neutrinos are demanded to explain the anomalous counting rate of experiments measuring the solar and the atmospheric neutrino fluxes. The discrepancy between experimental data and theoretical predictions can be accounted for in terms of neutrino oscillations, which would take place only in the case of massive neutrinos. The subject of this thesis is the search for neutrino oscillations in CHOOZ, the first long baseline experiment to explore a neutrino mass region where hints at neutrino oscillations came from the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In this thesis I study the untwisted affine quantum algebras and their specialization at a primitive l-th root of unity. In particular my goal is the complete description of the center, when l is odd. The center of the specialization of the quantum algebra at odd roots of unity is already known in the finite case, that is for finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebras. In this thesis I prove that analogous results hold in the affine untwisted case. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The subject of the present thesis is a study on bipolaron formation in heavily doped and polar materials. The study is applied to the physics of superconducting compounds with high transition temperature. In particular this thesis addresses the problem of the formation and superconducting properties of real space electron (hole) pairs in these systems and their dependence on the carrier density. The pairing mechanism results from the dynamical cooperation of photonic and electronic degrees of freedom which characterize the heavily doped polar material. We call these pairs biplasmapolarons (BBP) because they can be thought as quasi-particles composed by two electrons (holes) and their cloud of virtual photons and plasmons. In the present work we extend the theory to the calculation of both BPP binding energy and effective mass and we discuss the features of the effective electron-electron interaction. These volumes collect the lecture notes of the course An introduction to computational physics held in the academic year 2000/01 for students of the University of Pisa and Scuola Normale Superiore at the level of the last two-year undergraduates in physics and chemistry. Grid methods are the tool of the trade for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations and consequently they represent a must for anyone dealing with computational science. With grid methods, a major distinction is made between methods which do not require matrix algebra and those which do. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In the present thesis we develop new strategies concerning the use of lanthanide cations as spectroscopic probes for the study of molecular structures in solution. A widespread interest for lanthanides is mainly centered in two large fields: organic synthesis and clinical practice. Systems containing lanthanides enjoy a very favorable situation, since these ions feature high coordination numbers, which assure rich binding chemistry, and at the same time they possess the right spectroscopic properties to monitor it. The present thesis develops the potentialities of electronic spectroscopy of lanthanide systems in solution. We point out and overcome the drawbacks which have mainly hampered this kind of study so far, namely: a sensivity problem, an instrumental problem and a calibration problem. In the present thesis we develop new strategies concerning the use of lanthanide cations as spectroscopic probes for the study of molecular structures in solution. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. These are transcripts of notes taken at (some of) the lectures given at the Mittag-Leffler Institute during the first semester of the year 1996/97 on Enumerative geometry and its interaction with theoretical physics. The first part of this collection consists of notes from talks on the basics of quantum cohomology; the second part treats more advanced topics in quantum cohomology; the third part consists of background material and related topics; an appendix gives a description of Kresch's C-program Farsta for quantum cohomology computations. These notes are meant as a series of snapshots of quantum cohomology as seen by the speakers at the time of their lectures. The reader should bear in mind that quantum cohomology is a growing and rapidly changing field. Many of the writeups have been left in the form of the original talks, which were usually more concerned with giving motivations and a point of view, rather than conveying detailed proofs or attempting to survey the considerably extensive literature on the subject. I try to present the material of the lectures (delivered at SNS Pisa in April -- June 1999) in such a way that the students do not need to use additional literature during the first reading. The lectures focus on the following arguments: discussion of nonlinear problems in classical physics; the use of the multiple time scale expansion method to solve problems of nonlinear oscillations; description of nonlinear wave steepening and shock wave formation using the Lagrange variables; solution of nonlinear elliptic equations considering the Liouville equation; soliton solutions of the Korteweg de Vries, Sine-Gordon and Nonlinear Schrodinger equations; the use of the Backlund transformation; self-similarity of nonlinear systems. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Electron gas theory is one of the broadest fields in theoretical condensed matter physics, and even its most elementary application to the study of collective excitations and screening in the simpe metals poses interesting questions. Recent Electron Energy Loss and Inelastic X-Ray Scattering experiments have shown that traditional electron gas theories are unable to account for the measured plasmon dispersion relation. While it has become clear that neither correlation nor band structure alone can explain those results, the recently developed Time Dependent Density Functional Theory provides a general framework which can account for both. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. During the academic year 1995/96, I was invited by the Scuola Normale Superiore to give a series of lectures. The purpose of these notes is to make the underlying economic problems and the mathematical theory of exterior differential systems accessible to a larger number of people. It is the purpose of these notes to go over these results at a more leisurely pace, keeping in mind that mathematicians are not familiar with economic theory and that very few people have read Elie Cartan. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The first part of the book is devoted to the transport equation for a given vector field, exploiting the lagrangian structure of solutions. It also treats the regularity of solutions of some degenerate elliptic equations, which appear in the eulerian counterpart of some transport models with congestion. The second part of the book deals with the lagrangian structure of solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which describes the evolution of a system of particles under the self-induced gravitational/electrostatic field, and the existence of solutions of the semigeostrophic system, used in meteorology to describe the motion of large-scale oceanic/atmospheric flows. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. These lecture notes contain the main topics presented in a series of lectures given at the Scuola Normale di Pisa in the academic years 1998-1999-2000. The audience was made up of students of the last two years of the Physics program and a few Ph.D. students. The lectures address selected topics in stellar dynamics, presented in a deductive approach. Completeness is by no means the final goal of this work. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part, basic mathematical concepts are introduced, with some discussion of their physical meaning. In the second part, the tools developed are applied to an extensive discussion of selected problems offered by the stellar dynamics of collisionless systems of stars. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. This thesis deals with specific featuresof the theory of holomorphic dynamics in dimension 2 and then sets out to studyanalogous questions in higher dimensions, e.g. dealing with normal forms forrigid germs, and examples of Kato 3-folds.The local dynamics of holomorphic mapsaround critical points is still not completely understood, in dimension 2 orhigher, due to the richness of the geometry of the critical set for alliterates. In dimension 2, the study of thedynamics induced on a suitable functional space (the valuative tree) allows aclassification of such maps up to birational conjugacy, reducing the problem tothe special class of rigid germs, where the geometry of the critical set issimple. In some cases, from such dynamical dataone can construct special compact complex surfaces, called Kato surfaces, related to some conjectures in complex geometry. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In this thesis, we study the regularity of optimal transport maps and its applications to the semi-geostrophic system. The first two chapters survey the known theory, in particular there is a self-contained proof of Brenier theorem on existence of optimal transport maps and of Caffarellis Theorem on Holder continuity of optimal maps. In the third and fourth chapter we start investigating Sobolev regularity of optimal transport maps, while in Chapter 5 we show how the above mentioned results allows to prove the existence of Eulerian solution to the semi-geostrophic equation. In Chapter 6 we prove partial regularity of optimal maps with respect to a generic cost functions (it is well known that in this case global regularity can not be expected). More precisely we show that if the target and source measure have smooth densities the optimal map is always smooth outside a closed set of measure zero. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Sensory experience can dynamically modify both the anatomy and function of the brain. In particular, neurons can modify their connections in response to enviromental stimuli. This process, generally referred to as "neuronal plasticity", is the basis of learning and memory processes in the brain. Which are the bases of neuronal plasticity? That is, how can environmental factors and sensory experience modify the connections between neurons? Neurotrophic factors of the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) family are known to finely regulate the development and maintenance of synaptic connections in the PNS. The results obtained by the group of Maffei firstly suggested the hypothesis that neurotrophic factors could play a key role in the plasticity of the mammalian visual system. The purpose of this thesis is to give a general overview about the recent advances in the field of neurotrophine-regulated plasticity of the mammalian visual system. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Defining and computing a greatest common divisor of two polynomials with inexact coefficients is a classical problem in symbolic-numeric computation. The first part of this book reviews the main results that have been proposed so far in the literature. As usual with polynomial computations, the polynomial GCD problem can be expressed in matrix form: the second part of the book focuses on this point of view and analyses the structure of the relevant matrices, such as Toeplitz, Toepliz-block and displacement structures. New algorithms for the computation of approximate polynomial GCD are presented, along with extensive numerical tests. The use of matrix structure allows, in particular, to lower the asymptotic computational cost from cubic to quadratic order with respect to polynomial degree. Defining and computing a greatest common divisor of two polynomials with inexact coefficients is a classical problem in symbolic-numeric computation. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The book provides a non-perturbative approach to the symmetry breaking in the standard model, in this way avoiding the critical issues which affect the standard presentations. The debated empirical meaning of global and local gauge symmetries is clarified. The absence of Goldstone bosons in the Higgs mechanism is non-perturbatively explained by the validity of Gauss laws obeyed by the currents which generate the relatedglobal gauge symmetry. The solution of the U(1) problem and the vacuum structure in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are obtained without recourse to the problematic semiclassical instanton approximation, by rather exploiting the topology of the gauge group. The book provides a non-perturbative approach to the symmetry breaking in the standard model, in this way avoiding the critical issues which affect the standard presentations. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. This book introduces some methods for the determination of the three-dimensional geometry of molecules in solution and the occurrence of dynamical processes (interaction with the solvent, rearrangements in the molecular geometry, interactions with other molecules) in several ytterbium complexes. An especial attention has been deserved to the study of some important catalysts that were recently developed in the scientific research. The determination of molecular geometry and dynamics in solution, even if it is generally a hard task, is often a crucial step to understand and rationalize the catalytic mechanism, as well to design new catalysts. The proposed methods are applied here to several systems, even chiral, and are founded on a detailed analysis of the paramagnetic and optical properties of the ytterbium ion, and combining several instrumental techniques (mainly Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Circular Dichroism). This book introduces some methods for the determination of the three-dimensional geometry of molecules in solution and the occurrence of dynamical processes (interaction with the solvent, rearrangements in the molecular geometry, interactions with other molecules) in several ytterbium complexes.
