Neuware - What It Means (WHIM) is a collection of semiserious semiotic essays that examines how myth, symbol, and archetype manifest in everyday American life in the early third millennium. WHIM was written for readers interested in cultural studies, mythology, language, human behavior, philosophy, and anthropology, and is also intended to be a time capsule text for future readers curious about life back in the CE 2,000s. From the not-too-distant future to the end of the twenty-first century and beyond, What It Means will be a source for readers to gain insights into, what will likely seem to them, the peculiarities of an earlier time. From generation to generation, the world's myths, symbols, and archetypes express their timeless qualities in compelling and uniquely contemporary ways, and What It Means interprets and illuminates this phenomenon for today. Included in the WHIM collection are essays on topics such as 'The Roller Coaster Ride as Aristotelian Narrative,' 'Indoor Skydiving and Dreams of Flying,' 'Fidget Spinners,' 'Car Wash as Surrogate Purification Ritual,' and 'Acoustic Weapons.' What It Means shows that ancient stories, archetypes, symbols, and ideas can all be found in the contemporary, providing (at least a few of) the answers to our sometimes confusing, sometimes chaotic existence. Some of the essays are pure parody; some include whimsical content, and some are a blend of fact and fiction. Some emulate the magical thinking-preposterous inferences based on speculation and personal bias-that appears occasionally in anthropological scholarship.WHIM links to French semiological thought in general and to Roland Barthes in particular. Barthes famously analyzed popular post-World War II consumer and entertainment culture, and What It Means aspires to be the early third millennium's answer to his insightful and funny work Mythologies. Published in 1957, Mythologies is a collection of essays that examines the bourgeois norm, as he puts it, and the appropriation-cum-transformation of myth to express modern meanings. Mythologies includes essays on 'The Romans in Films' (why do Romans always have fringe bangs and sweaty bodies ), 'Soap Powders and Detergents' (substances that vanquish evil and dirt and maintain the public order), and 'Operation Margarine' (by examining the margarine versus butter dispute, Barthes illuminates the ways in which the establishment rids us of our prejudices). With Barthes as inspiration, WHIM is a survey of today's bourgeois norm in a collection of twenty-one short essays.

Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Corky Dodds, a rattlesnake wrangler in his early fifties, is overconfident, egotistical, and hyper-masculine, and the most powerful person in the small West Texas town of Eden's Lair. He is the organizer and undisputed king of the town's singular claim to fame, the Eden's Lair Rattlesnake Roundup, an event that provides the backdrop for a tale of tyranny, misogyny, incest, and redemption. Corky says, 'we're just trying to control the species,' but evidence abounds that the Roundup functions as more of a psychological than a physical purging of an imagined threat inspired by the Biblical story of Adam and Eve.Corky's son Valjean is Eden's Lair's only resident who questions the motives of the Roundup. Rose McCleary is a Dallas transplant and fourth-grade school teacher living in Eden's Lair, and Rose and Valjean develop deep feelings for each other. Valjean's devotion to Rose, and concern for his abused sister Darlynn, creates a son-against-father conflict that climaxes when Valjean rejects both his father and his environment, putting Rose in a life-or-death situation. During weekend rattlesnake roundup events, as the snakes are waking up from their winter brumation (the extreme slowing down of metabolism), thousands of rattlesnakes are hunted and captured. Men in paramilitary attire, who in everyday life are ranchers and business owners, transform into mythic heroes armed with snake hooks, trash cans, and gas canisters. They collectively storm local snake dens, spraying gas into their hiding places to force the hapless, torpid snakes into the open air. The captured snakes are deposited in holding bins, later to be milked, butchered, skinned, and eaten, and this elaborate ritual is inspired by the notion that snakes are a deadly threat. The rattlesnake roundup in Deliver Us From Eden expresses its distortions in the characters that populate the screenplay, such as Kundoo, the story's mystic and convenience store manager; Dr. Ennis, the corrupt town physician; Junior Snake Wranglers Chuck and Steve; Richard, Rose's husband whom she left behind in Dallas; and Bob, the Master of Ceremonies for the Miss Snake Charmer contest. Deliver Us From Eden explores the evidence that abounds that roundups are more of a psychological than a physical purging, are a ritual reinforcement of traditional roles, and a murderous paradigm for the superstitious link between snakes, women, and evil. Perhaps it is more than snakes that the Eden's Lair Roundup purports to control, and Deliver Us From Eden explicates this theme.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Not all septuagenarians become devoted grandparents, contented gardeners, or avid pickleball players, some still crave risk and adventure. Eva Rome enters her eighth decade and rejects her comfortable, semiretired life, questing for meaning in a place that's a better fit than Disneyfied Santa Fe, New Mexico. In the midst of Covid, she sells her home and hits the road to search for Location X, a place that speaks to who she is. Her investigations take her around the globe, starting in São Paulo, Brazil, on a street named for Diogenes, the Greek cynic who carried a lantern around Athens, shoving it into his fellow citizens' faces and declaring, 'I'm looking for a man.' Eva holds her own lantern up to the world and proclaims, 'I'm looking for a place.' Her investigations take her from São Paulo to Mexico to Uncertain, Texas, to retirement hot spots in Costa Rica and Panamá, Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Archangel Michael, whom she learns is her guardian spirit, makes appearances and offers guidance.X is used to describe something vague or mysterious, like Mr. X, Brand X, X-ray. X is the place on a pirate's map that marks where treasure is buried. In an algebraic equation, X is an unknown quantity, and solving for X was the process to which Eva dedicated herself. X symbolizes a crossroads.Location X is an unconventional memoir/travelogue of Eva's eighteen-month quest and what she discovered along the way, a compilation of reflections and reactions to quotidian experiences written in both diary form and as short fiction and presented in chronological order. During those eighteen months, Eva relocated over forty times, sometimes returning to her previous home base New Mexico, and when she needed to conserve resources, she accepted housesitting jobs for vacationing pet owners in Oregon, Texas, and Massachusetts. Diary entries record travel challenges, the struggles and triumphs of adapting to new places, observations of unfamiliar cultures, interactions with people and places, with her relocation criteria continuously running in the background. Sometimes a place or an experience-in El Paso and in Rome, while perusing a menu in a México City restaurant, and in a Fort Davis, Texas, travel trailer-inspired a piece of short fiction written in the third person using a proxy named Colleen. Colleen is derived from the Irish name Cailleach, meaning 'old woman'; the Cailleach is a divine hag and wise woman who created the Celtic landscape. At an advanced age, don't we all want the freedom to create our own personal landscapes These associations appealed to Eva.Eva gives herself time to become comfortable with the physicality of each place she visits. She evaluates a set of criteria she has established for herself: Is it easy to understand the layout and to get around, do I like the architecture, infrastructure, and other design elements, is the weather tolerable, is there a grocery store within walking distance, do its citizens seem happy and how likely is it that they'll be accepting of a newcomer, is my favorite brand of toothpaste available, etc., etc. If a place can tick all the boxes, great; but for Eva, it's not only about self-interest. It's also about finding a community that values all its members. It's about finding ways to contribute. The peripatetic lifestyle can seem both chaotic and revelatory, depending on one's outlook. What it does do, for sure, is force focus on personal priorities. During the process of discovering Location X, Eva kept these three simple questions at the fore: Can I envision living my life in this place Can I connect to my adopted community in meaningful ways Can I envision taking my final breath here without reservation After literally dodging a bullet in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Eva realized the place met her criteria for relocation, and stayed.
