Cloth, small 8vo, 243, [1] pp, ills. From the blurb: "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it.Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was excepti…onally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth Century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Fine in Fine dustwrapper.

Cloth, folio, 33 x 28 cm, 126, [2] pp, 50 colour plates. From the blurb: "Although most of the artists who decorated the religious, literary and historical writings of the Middle Ages with their illuminated letters and figures remain anonymous, colour photography has made their work increasingly familiar to the present-day publi…c. For many centuries, however, these exquisite miniatures were available only to those who had access to the manuscripts. Then, in the 1840s, new chromolithographic printing techniques were developed which made it possible to convey the glorious colours of the originals by superimposing different tints on one another; and with these technical improvements came a fresh interest in illumination: The Illuminated Books of the Middle Ages is among the finest of the nineteenth-century books printed by the new process. The author and illustrator, Henry Noel Humphreys, who provided the scholarly text and copied the illuminations in the new medium, took care to include examples of the greatest possible range of styles and added a comprehensive list of important illuminated books to. his Introduction. The first of his colour plates depicts a folio from the seventh-century Lindisfarne Gospels, the last shows part of the Prayer Book of Louis XIV of France painted around 1,000 years later. As his selection makes clear, Humphreys was primarily interested in the decorative aspects of the illuminator's art, and in addition to making copies of whole pages, he has also borrowed sections of ornament and individual letters to enhance his text. An inspiration to the would-be illuminator, or to anyone seeking authentic medieval ornament to incorporate into modern design, this beautiful book is also an important reference work for the art historian and an example of Victorian printing at its best." Very Good in a dustwrapper with minor wear to the upper edge.

Rexine, 8vo, xx, 216 pp, 72 colour plates and 19 monochrome illustrations. From the blurb: "Birket Foster, or Myles Birket Foster, to give the artist his full name, was born in North Shields in Northumberland on 4th February 1825. He came from an established family of North Country Quakers, who owned land in Lancashire and North…umberland. He was the seventh child and sixth son of his parents; his father, also called Myles Birket Foster, had 'emigrated' to London in 1830, travelling from Newcastle by sea. It was in London, therefore, that young Birket Foster grew up and when he left school, he started work in his father's firm. This did not last long. An accident with a corkscrew convinced his father that he would be better off pursuing an artistic career and through the agency of the north country connection his father arranged for him to be apprenticed to Ebenezer Landells. Landells was an extraordinary man. A former apprentice of Thomas Bewick, he had come to London from Newcastle, and ran an engraving business; but his chief claim to fame is that he founded Punch. Under Landells, Birket Foster became friends with many of the leading engravers and artists of the day. His particular friend was Edmund Evans, latterly the most famous colour printer of the 19th century and promoter of Kate Greenaway. It would be true to say that of all the Victorian artists Birket Foster has remained one of the most sought after and the most popularthe many lovely colour reproductions, over 70 in all, reproduced in this book show why his art is so much in demand." Cloth, 4to, [144] pp, colour plates. From the blurb: "Amongst the exceptional artists of our times Klee holds a unique position on the borderline between the abstract and the figurative. His prolific output (more than 9,000 titles) is accompanied by theoretical observations which are indispensable to the understanding of his inn…ovatory character. A personal friend of Franz Marc and of Kandinsky during the Blaue Reiter period Klee then spent ten years as a teacher at the heart of that most audacious undertaking to redefine artistic pedagogy, the Bauhaus. Here he developed a concept of creation for his students, founded on an analogy between the generation of the world and that of the work itself, an analogy rooted in a cultural base which is fundamentally romantic. Forced out of Germany by the Nazis, he spent the rest of his life exiled in Bern, tirelessly pursuing his creative work and beliefs. The 48 works reproduced in these pages attempt to locate the principal landmarks in his vast output. They enable us to see how the power and importance of Paul Klee lie in this one fundamental requirement: over and above all possible significations, the creation of the work must be an attempt 'to make visible' the proximity of man to the origin of things." Cloth, 8vo, xxiv, 544 pp. "This book is a comprehensive illustrated guide to the outstanding landmarks and treasures along the main roads of the national network. It covers an enormous variety of subjects: not only railways, but hotels, and scenic views of the country. To have given all the roads of England within the limits of…such a volume was obviously impossible. Only the main roads have therefore been described, although the distances between places on the various tours by the cross-roads are very generally given. By reference to the maps and charts, the routes by the cross-roads will readily be ascertained, and by turning to the index, the reader will be directed to the pages where all the places of any importance are described. The names, position, and distances of the various places have been copied from the maps of the Ordnance Survey; and the same valuable authority has been the basis of the several charts and district-maps with which the volume is illustrated. The names of the proprietors of the various mansions described have been carefully compared with Burke's Peerage, Baronetage, and History of the Landed Commoners. The memorable incidents mentioned in connection with the various localities have been carefully selected from the best county histories and other topographical works of authority. The population is according to the last census of 1861." - from the blurb. Contents age-toned, otherwise Fine in Fine dustwrapper.

Cloth-backed boards, 8vo, 24 cm, xxx, 676 pp, numerous illustrations. An excellent and highly readable general history of printing and everything to do with the making of a book, by an acknowledged expert. Extensively illustrated. From the blurb: "Mr. McMurtrie's approach to his subject is historical. The Book covers the origin…of writing and of the alphabet; the beginnings of printing in the Far East; writing materials; the genesis and early history of paper; books in manuscript and their scribes and illustrators; the European invention of printing and its dissemination; type design and its development; book illustration and decoration; bookbinding and the work of celebrated binders; the work of eminent printers, such as Jenson, Aldus, Plantin, Baskerville, Didot, Bodoni, Benjamin Franklin, William Morris, and their more recent successors; the private presses; and finally, contemporary book designing, typography, and illustration, and the ideas of the book designer of today. The Book will answer any but the most specialized and technical questions in regard to books and their makers. The actual processes of book production are described simply and plainly. There are more than one hundred and seventy illustrations including some hundred and twenty reproductions of title pages, text pages, and engravings from famous books, all of which supplement and enrich the text. Many pages of bibliographical references and a comprehensive index also serve to make The Book an invaluable reference work as well as a book of fascinating interest for the general reader."
