Paperback. Etat : Good. This convoy must not get through-U-boats pursue, attack and sink. This was the signal that Admiral Donitz sent to the commanders of the 21 U-boats of the Markgraf wolf-pack on September 9, 1941 just before the United States entered the war. Sixty-three merchant ships; a number old and dilapidated and all slow and heavy-laden with vital supplies from the United States for the United Kingdom, were strung out in 12 columns abreast, covering 25 miles of inhospitable ocean. They set sail from Nova Scotia at a time when the German U-boats were sinking more than one hundred ships a month and the US Navy could do nothing but stand-by and watch-at least officially. Around noon, the three US destroyers, Charles F. Hughes, Rus-sell and Sims, wheeled away and made off to the west at speed. The American ships had served their purpose, for although they had taken great pains not to be associated with SC42's official escort, the mere presence of these modern, powerful men-of-war had con-tributed to the withdrawal of the U-boats. The convoy's escort of one destroyer and three corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy, all untried in combat, was hopelessly outclassed when the battle for SC42 commenced. The battle lasted for seven days and covered 1,200 miles of ocean. First hand accounts by participants on both sides add interest and drama. With 37 years at sea under his belt, Captain Bernard Edwards has over ten titles in print including SOS-Men Against the Sea, Blood & Bushido, Return of the Coffin Ships, and Salvo A resident of Wales, Captain Edwards is close to the sea he writes about. His lifetime experience at sea enables him to add authentic touches and bring official reports to life.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Valdi West left the Caribbean to study at Columbia University. Instead, she becomes hopelessly entangled in life as a New York City domestic worker. Twenty years later, she can barely face her derailed dreams. So she focuses her razor sharp attention and cutting wit on the affairs of her babysitting clique: Senior citizen Madam Lucian, who is supplementing her meager wages by selling bread from her Brooklyn apartment; Monica, who anxiously stirs perks into her Green Card marriage and Ava, her one time confidant, whose impending success at the America Dream has Valdi unnerved. Set further and further adrift from her own dream of becoming an award-winning writer, Valdi's life becomes hopelessly entangled in the unending demands of her latest employers, a Manhattan couple with an errant son. Valdi's chance encounter with her estranged, wildly successful, twin sister pushes her to the brink. She has two choices: sink or swim.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. A deeply scouring poetic account of the residential school experience, and a deeply important indictment of colonialism in Canada. Many of the poems in Louise Halfe's Burning in This Midnight Dream were written in response to the grim tide of emotions, memories, dreams and nightmares that arose in her as the Truth and Reconciliation process unfolded. In heart-wrenching detail, Halfe recalls the damage done to her parents, her family, herself. With fearlessly wrought verse, Halfe describes how the experience of the residential schools continues to haunt those who survive, and how the effects pass like a virus from one generation to the next. She asks us to consider the damage done to children taken from their families, to families mourning their children; damage done to entire communities and to ancient cultures. Halfe's poetic voice soars in this incredibly moving collection as she digs deep to discover the root of her pain. Her images, created from the natural world, reveal the spiritual strength of her culture. Originally published in 2016 by Coteau Books, Burning in This Midnight Dream won the Indigenous Peoples' Publishing Award, the Rasmussen, Ramussen & Charowsky Indigenous Peoples' Writing Award, the Saskatchewan Arts Board Poetry Award, the League of Canadian Poets' Raymond Souster Award, and the High Plains Book Award for Indigenous Writers. It was also the 2017 WILLA Literacy Award Finalist in Poetry. This new edition includes a new Afterword by Halfe.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. MIRACLE STRIP, a poetry collection by Matt Layne, is a hybrid of the written and spoken word. Each piece of the collection has an embellished QR code which, when scanned, transforms you from reader into listener. In the campfire tradition of storytelling, the first line of the book invites you to tell me your story, and I will tell you mine, and like a couple of backwoods adventurers, you and the poet travel together through intricate memories of the deep south and the ghosts who haunt its environs as you journey through MIRACLE STRIP.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. WINNER OF THE 2022 SK ARTS POETRY AWARD FINALIST FOR THE 2022 HIGH PLAINS BOOK AWARDS A gender-fluid trickster character leaps from Cree stories to inhabit this racous and rebellious new work by award-winning poet Louise Bernice Halfe. There are no pronouns in Cree for gender; awâsis (which means illuminated child) reveals herself through shape-shifting, adopting different genders, exploring the English language with merriment, and sharing his journey of mishaps with humor, mystery, and spirituality. Opening with a joyful and intimate Introduction from Elder Maria Campbell, awâsis -- kinky and dishevelled is a force of Indigenous resurgence, resistance, and soul-healing laughter. If you've read Halfe's previous books, prepared to be surprised by this one. Raging in the dark, uncovering the painful facts wrought on her and her people's lives by colonialism, racism, religion, and residential schools, she has walked us through raw realities with unabashed courage and intense, precise lyricism. But for her fifth book, another choice presented itself. Would she carve her way with determined ferocity into the still-powerful destructive forces of colonialism, despite Canada's official, hollow promises to make things better? After a soul-searching Truth and Reconciliation process, the drinking water still hasn't improved, and Louise began to wonder whether inspiration had deserted her. Then awâsis showed up--a trickster, teacher, healer, wheeler-dealer, shapeshifter, woman, man, nuisance, inspiration. A Holy Fool with their fly open, speaking Cree, awâsis came to Louise out of the ancient stories of her people, her Elders, from community input (through tears and laughter), from her own full heart and her three-dimensional dreams. Following awâsis's lead, Louise has flipped her blanket over, revealing a joking, mischievous, unapologetic alter ego--right on time.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. The discovery of a new dish does more for human happiness than the discovery of a star, the noted gourmet Brillat-Savarin once wrote. If that's so, the discovery of ice cream must be worth a whole galaxy. And the name of the discoverer should be emblazoned in the heavens. The trouble is, we don't know who made that first dish of vanilla, strawberry or triple chocolate chunk ice cream. That may explain why there are candidates for the honor all over the world. Some give the ancient Romans credit for inventing ice cream, but although they did send their slaves off to the mountains to get snow, they didn't make ice cream with it. They poured syrup on it and ate it, or they used it to chill their wines or fruit. Others say Marco Polo brought ice cream back to Italy from China. He didn't. The Chinese and the Europeans developed their ice creams separately. In the Arab world, snow and ice were combined with fruits and a sweetener -- usually honey or sugar -- to make a chilled drink called a sharb t. The word led to the English sherbet, the French sorbet, the Italian sorbetto and the Spanish sorbete. But a sharb t was and still is a drink. The most-told story is that Catherine de Medici brought ices from Italy to France in the 16th century when she married the future king Henry II. The reality is that ices didn't appear in France for another century, and French confectioners said they had to go to Italy to learn how to make them.At the turn of the twenty-first century, Americans were eating 23 quarts of ice cream per person, per year, more than any other country. Vanilla was America's favorite flavor, with chocolate coming in second. The health issues associated with ice cream were no longer colic and cold stomachs; they were fat and cholesterol. Nevertheless, premium and super-premium ice cream sales were growing, and low-fat ice cream sales were shrinking. Manufacturers were researching the possibility of adding Omega-3 fatty acids to ice cream to give it the health benefits associated with salmon. With all the premium ice creams on the market today, why make your own? Because it's easy and it's fun. You don't need ice and salt for today's ice cream makers, and they're affordable and simple to use. You control the ingredients so you know exactly what's in your ice cream. No guar gum or salmon required. You can use your imagination, experiment with flavors and add your own chunky bits. You, like me, can make ice cream that's parfaite. Paperback. Etat : Good. LONGLISTED FOR THE 2023 FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITY READS AWARD Blood follows a Two-Spirit Indigenous person as they navigate urbanity, queerness, and a kaleidoscope of dreams, memory, and kinship. Conceived in the same world as their acclaimed debut, Bones, Tyler Pennock's Blood centres around a protagonist who at first has difficulty knowing the difference between connection and pain, and we move with them as they explore what it means to want. Pennock weaves longing, intimacy, and Anishinaabe relationalities to recentre and rethink their speaker's relationship to the living--never forgetting non-human kin. This book is a look at how deep history is represented in the everyday; it also tries to answer how one person can challenge the impacts of that history. It is a reminder that Indigenous people carry the impacts of colonial history and wrestle with them constantly. Blood explores the relationships between spring and winter, ice and water, static things and things beginning to move, and what emerges in the thaw. "A music as sensitive as it is revelatory."--Canisia Lubrin, author of The Dyzgraphxst.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Poetry. Both grave and brave, serious and hilarious--new poems from a Governor General's Award-winning poet. HOW TO AVOID HUGE SHIPS, Julie Bruck's fourth collection of poetry, is a book of arguments and spells against the ambushes of time. Parents grow down, children up, and it's from the uncomfortable in-between that these poems peer into what Philip Larkin describes as the long slide. But what if we haven't reached the end of the infinite adolescence we thought we'd been promised? We're still here in this world of flying ottomans, alongside a middle-schooler named Dow Jones, and the prehistoric miracle of a blue heron's foot. We may be afraid, but we're still amused--sometimes, even awed. Looking squarely at the way things are, glossing over none of the absurdities and injustices of contemporary life, Julie Bruck pays ardent attention to it all. The touch is light, even when the subject is heavy. One has a steady sense of being trusted to catch and feel the intangible muchness housed in these deceptively direct poems.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. The Growing Menace--More and more, homeowners and gardeners throughout rural and suburban America have been forced to deal with a growing menace. Deer From coast to coast, deer have developed quite an appetite for almost anything growing in our landscapes and gardens. Deer frequently feed on flowers, fruits, vegetables and the twigs of trees and shrubs, often permanently disfiguring them. In winter, bucks rub their antlers on sapling trees and shrubs, severely damaging the bark and seriously threatening the health and life of the plant. As a result, deer have become a big a nuisance to home gardeners and professionals who design and maintain landscapes and gardens. The economic costs caused by deer browsing damage in the U.S. amounts to millions of dollars every year. Replacing plantings is one thing but even more is spent on repellents, fences and numerous other strategies for protecting landscapes, home gardens and agricultural crops from deer browsing damage. Suburban sprawl, increased abandoned farmlands and unchecked growing populations of deer are just some of the reasons deer have become such a costly nuisance around the country. This book is to help and guide home gardeners and professionals with creating pleasing and colorful flowerbeds and borders in deer country by using deer resistant flowers and other plants. With a list of well over 350 flowers and ornamental plants, Flowerbeds and Borders for Deer Country will help you select plants that are known to have a resistancy to deer browsing damage. By making the right choices you'll be able to significantly reduce or eventually eliminate the need for using repellents, fences and other means of protecting your garden from damage by deer. Flowerbeds and Borders for Deer Country focuses on herbaceous flowering plants, ornamental soft- stemmed flowering plants and plants valued for their interesting foliage. All plants listed are known to be resistant to browsing. Included are lists of annual and perennial flowering plants, groundcovers, vines, flower bulbs, herbs and ornamental grasses that are known to have a resistancy to deer browsing damage in most areas of the continental U.S. Vincent Drzewucki Jr. is a horticulturist, lecturer, and director of the Long Island Nurserymen's Association in New York State.
