Signature of Forster Alexander Sondley, attorney and scholar, was born at Montrealla, his maternal grandfather's home in Alexander, a community ten miles north of Asheville. As an adult he most often referred to himself as F. A. Sondley. A lawyer, historian, and collector of art, he is chiefly remembered for his personal library of approximately 30,000 volumes containing hundreds of rare works on southern and state history and natural history. The city of Asheville acquired the library by bequest at his death, and parts of it still form the nucleus of the Sondley Reference Library in Asheville.

With chapters on Glaston…bury, Brislington, Knole House, Westbury, and more.A charming guide illustrated with numerous original photographs depicting the areas, these are pasted within red line borders. The number of photographs seen in various copies varies, Hyett & Bazeley's Manual of Gloucestershire Literature calls for eighteen photographs (p. 256,) while the copy held at the British Library counts thirty-four.The present copy is illustrated with twenty-five original photographs and two full page plates in black and white. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and rubbing tot he spine and extremities, some chipping and minor loss to the spine. The front board has detached. With Harold E Matthews' small bookplate tot he front pastedown. Previous ownership signature to the front blank page, dated 1870. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint scattered spotting, particularly to the first and last few leaves and to the leaves of plates, although, generally, the pages are very clean throughout.
