Cloth, large 8vo, 29 cm, 80 pp, colour plates and ills. From the blurb - "Books were made by hand in Western Europe for a thousand years, from the earliest days of Christianity - when monks wrote and decorated Bibles for the glory of God in their wind-swept monasteries at the far margins of the known world - to the high Renaissance, when the world was at Europe's feet, and the printing press enabled Martin Luther and other agents of the Reformation to split Europe into opposing camps within one generation. Generations of artists and cultures influenced the art of the manuscripts, which underwent fascinating and clearly developed changes, incorporating details and derivations of contemporary styles, and some of the most distinctive features and unsurpassed magnificence of colour in the history of art. These illuminated manuscripts are among the world's greatest masterpieces. Many of them survive, allowing us to appreciate their luminous beauty and the skill of the men who made them. Who wrote the manuscripts, brilliantly coloured and bright with gold? Who painted the charming miniatures? What books did they choose, and how are they made? All these questions and more are answered in this fascinating and evocative book, which examines an art form that brought to life the tomes of our forebears, and captured some of the most important epochs of history in their gilded and exquisitely detailed pages."
