The construction of models with scale framing and planking is not beyond the ability of the most ordinary modelmaker, providing his main interest is in the actual work of construction and not merely in seeing the finished product. An elaborate workshop and tool kit is not necessary, since it is largely based on the building of one of the Author's own models at a time when immediately after World War II, neither of these were available to him. Although the primary model described in Vol. 1 is to scale in all its internal constructional details, alternative simplified methods are also included, as are the hulls of sailing models, power craft and clinker-built boats. The Author's books on sailing ship history and construction are well known, as is the wide range of plans. The present book is founded on the experience of some fifty years of spare-time model building, and takes the reader right through its subject from the reading and interpretation of plans to mounting the finished model on its base. It is a book, which will raise the standard of the modelling of wooden ships. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Very Good. There was a danger that much of the Fancy Work would be lost altogether. This book is an effort to preserve it. Of late years a false standard of smartness seems to have been set up. It consists in scrubbing decks and polishing brasswork. These are all very well but are jobs that can be done by anyone. Good rope work is a sailor's job. This text-book gives in detail: Whipping, Spindle Eye, Bottle Knot, Catspaw, Lashing, Plaits, Sennit, Gaskets, Grommet, Splices, Hitches, Turk's Head, Russian Mat, Double Carrick Sennit, just to mention a few of the contents. This grand work is amply illustrated and will be an invaluable guide to those who have the salt of the sea in them. A considerable amount of new material has been introduced. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Very Good. This book is about the Building and Repairing of Ships - Passenger Liners, Warships, Tankers, Cargo Liners, Drilling Rigs and many others - on the Tay, on the Clyde, on the three rivers of the North East Coast of England and elsewhere in the U.K. George Parker is the third generation of his family to embark on a shipbuilding career and has written of the industry that he loves, from the "inside". The early chapters briefly chart his grandfather's and father's progress in the industry and these are illustrated by ships of the period. The main section of the book traces the author's own career from apprenticeship to managing director - in the latter position working first in the private sector and later in the public sector. A number of illustrations are incorporated including the launch of QE2 together with many other distinguished Merchant and Naval vessels. The book provides an insight into Shipbuilding Labour Relations as well as pointing to a number of reasons for the accelerating decline of the industry commencing in the '50s. This autobiography abounds with amusing stories and incidents which illuminate the dramas, joys and sorrows of working in this once-great industry. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
