Following the career of Colonel Carl Eifler, Agent 001 of the Office of Strategic Services, This Grim and Savage Game takes us on a thrilling journey through wartime Europe, Africa, and Asia, as OSS agents plan and execute daring operations deep within enemy territory. We follow Eifler on a harrowing trip into the jungles of Burma where 300 agents of Detachment 101, author Tom Moon among them, allied with Kachin Burmese tribesmen harass, confound and ultimately defeat 10,000 battle hardened Japanese soldiers. Moon takes us along as Eifler leads his men on rescue missions to save downed fliers, on parachute drops into jungle clearings, and on a memorable trip with General "Wild Bill" Donovan, Commander of OSS, to a tiny airstrip deep in hostile territory. Later we follow Eifler to Europe, Africa, India, East Asia, and back to Hawaii and California as OSS agents are dispatched to theaters of operations around the globe, plans are made to kidnap Hitler's top atomic scientist, and, ultimately, training begins on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California for the most difficult and most dangerous mission of all, the clandestine penetration of the mainland of Japan, to be led by Eifler himself. Along the way we meet dozens of characters, among them Marlena Dietrich and Julia Child and other courageous women of OSS, and many other individuals who have influenced American and world history of the last 50 years. Though a thrilling, true story of daring and adventure, This Grim and Savage Game is far more. It is a behind~the~scenes look at the development of America's highly secret intelligence and securiry agencies, from Roosevelt's Coordinator oflnformation (COI) to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and, finally, to the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency ( CIA) at war's end. When he dropped out the door of a military transport with a parachute strapped on his back to join Detachment 101 in the Burmese mountains, author Tom Moon was the youngest agent of the OSS. Today he is a successful businessman in Garden Grove, California. He is a frequent lecturer on the OSS, and the history of America's secret intelligence and security agencies.
