Issue No. 48 includes six photographs by Strand, six halftones by Steiglitz of installations at his gallery 291, and single photographs by Frank Eugene, Arthur Allen Lewis and Francis Bruguiere. Issue No. 49/50 includes eleven original photogravures, all after work by Strand, among them "The White Fence", "Abstraction Porch Shadows", and "Abstraction Bowls".One cannot overestimate the importance of these two issues of Camera Work. As Milton Brown has noted, the appearance of Strand's portrait series herein "was a revelation. Even today they are strikingly powerful images; they were then a new stage in photographic realism. The close-up views and cropping of negatives cut off the subjects from their environment, sometimes even breaking the frame and riveting attention entirely on the physiognomic and psychological revelation of individuality, character, and social condition. . . . Strand's experiments with abstraction and the machine were his unwitting contribution to the history of photography: the portraits, basic to the rest of his development, are the first clear expression of his own aesthetic philosophy." - Milton W. Custom binding of full tan calf, with black and gilt label on front and stamped leather label on spine. The original printed wrappers are bound in. Very slight foxing to endpapers, else fine. Ten photogravures by George H. Seeley and four by Marius De Zayas of sketches. The custom binding was created to compliment the design of Camera Work's printed wrappers.

Stieglitz, Alfred (illustrateur). First edition. 4to., 58 pp., complete with 8 hand-pulled photogravures, and 2 halftone reproductions, (20) pp. adverts. Case-bound in blue buckram with a leather spine label, titled in gilt. Although lacking the printed wrappers, this issue was not trimmed and the text leaves are unopened. The photogravure plates are fine. Light soiling along the exposed lower edge, which was issued untrimmed. A very good copy. There are 5 photogravures by Clarence H. White, 1 by Edward Steichen, and 2 by Eva Watson-Schultze; there are also high quality 2 halftones by Watson-Schultze.

No Binding. Etat : Near Fine. An extraordinary photogravure in beautiful condition of out of focus headshot (19.7 x 15.5 cm). Tipped onto full sheet of original 1897 Enfield paper. Neatly taken from the scarce issue (it wasn't me, sir). One of the few truly great portrait photographers.
