Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The original Argosy magazine, featuring short fiction, poetry and more, was around for nearly one hundred years until, we were told, that the market for short stories had died. Beaten to death by half hour shows on television, perhaps However, for many of us the short story was the lubrication which so gently eased us into developing a taste for - or even an addiction to - literature in all its forms. Apart from resurrecting a love of the genre, the aim of this new magazine is to provide a platform from which unknown or little known Westcountry authors can display their wares to the wider world. The lands surrounding the Torridge Estuary, and Appledore in particular, are particularly rich in literary talent, and - indeed - always have been. Authors like Rudyard Kipling, Rosemary Sutcliffe, Henry Williamson, Michael Morpurgo, and Charles Kingsley drew upon the genius loci of the region, but also enriched it by doing so. The psychogeographers would say that there is something in the DNA of the area which encourages this spiritual and artistic two way traffic, and this is something that this magazine is here to celebrate, support and encourage.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Upon Bone Hill in Northam, North Devon, there stands a flagstaff atop a cairn of sixty stones, each of which is engraved with the name of an esteemed Naval hero from British maritime history. The memorial was erected to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, and with this concise collection of biographies of each of the men named, Jim Jackson takes us on a short trip across the high seas and looks at the life of those whose naval careers helped mould our country, whether through victory or defeat. From names well known to us like Nelson and Drake to those perhaps not so familiar, Jim Jackson's book brings colour to the starkness of the stones.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this new anthology of short stories West Country author Jim Jackson takes a lead in the restoration of this once popular genre , and in so doing escorts us upon a wide ranging flight of the imagination. From Orpington and Africa to Australia and Georgia. From inner to outer space. Lovers, millionaires, scientists and fugitives from justice are just some of the characters he paints for us with colourful precision. Every narrative is a miniature masterpiece in a great story telling tradition and an ideal diet for those who prefer to savour their literature in well crafted bite sized portions.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The stuff in this book is not dated. It is not annotated and there has been no attempt to put it into any historical or socio-political context. Why Precisely because the vast majority of this stuff is lightweight, hopefully easy to read, and hopefully entertaining. It is a mixture of editorials, some book reviews, and a few feature articles, which have been taken almost at random from stuff that I wrote between 2013 2016 in a magazine called Gonzo Weekly, of which I am the founding editor. If I may quote, somewhat out of context, Mark Twain:'Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted;persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished;persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.BY ORDER OF THE AUTHOR per G.G., CHIEF OF ORDNANCE'.To which I shall only add that I hope that it affords you some little amusement.Hail Eris.Love and peace.Jon Downes.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is a tribute to those young men from Woolsery and District in North Devon, who suddenly found themselves thrust, either by bravely volunteering or by being conscripted, into the horrors of the First World War. It was a far cry from their peaceful, but hard, rural life. Their stories are now recorded forever. They were heroes, one and all. Some would return to the bosoms of their families, but there were some who never made it back to their homeland and loved ones, and rest forever young in those foreign fields. In the famous words from the poem by Robert Laurence Binyon:'We will remember them'.…
