During the four years since that meeting, much interest in adhesion has been generated among six divisions of the American Chemical Society. Then, in 1974, the Macromolecular Secretariat appointed me to work closely with the six Session chairmen in organizing this Symposium on Science and Technology of Adhesion. Needless to say, the success of the Symposium which took place between April 7 and 10, 1975 in Philadelphia, Pa., is due to their excellent cooperation and the enthusiastic response of con tributors. As originally planned, each division was responsible for one session, and most of the papers, including several late con tributions, are published in these two volumes of proceedings. During the Symposium, we held a banquet in honor of Professor Herman Mark in celebration of his eightieth birthday. His Plenary Lecture and the Symposium Address by Professor Murray Goodman are published in full at the beginning of the first volume. I thank Professors Mark and Goodman for their excellent presentations on this memorable occasion.

He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The three survey chapters by Li and Treibergs, Lu, and Siu (Chapters 1-3) all center around the areas of mathematics in which Zhong made noteworthy contributions. In addition to putting Zhong's mathematical contributions in perspective, these articles should be useful also to a large segment of the mathematical community; together they give a coherent picture of a sizable portion of contemporary geometry. The survey of Lu differs from the other two in that it gives a firsthand account of the work done in the People's Republic of China in several complex variables in the last four decades.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 500 pp. Englisch.

Al though it may appear that another such publication may be superflu ous, the subject of alcohol abuse is still open for further explora tion and the field of the biochemical pharmacology of ethanol is in its infancy. This is evidenced, for example, by the unavailability of any drugs that are designed specifically for the treatment of alcohol intoxication or alcohol addiction. The impetus for this publication was generated by a spontane ous enthusiasm following the symposium on BiochemicaZ Ph~acoZogy of EthanoZ that was organized at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, Division of Biological Chemistry in August 1973 in Chicago. It was the first symposium on such a topic ever in cluded in the program of that large society of American chemists. The original aim of the symposium was to acquaint the members of the society with some basic facts about the biological chemistry of ethanol. The symposium included seven papers and covered a rela tively narrow range of ethanol biochemistry. In view of the enthu siasm shown at the Chemical Society meeting, the panelists decided to publish the program and to amplify it by inclusion of additional topics which have remained relatively unexplored in earlier publica tions. In addition, reviews have been included which discuss old topics from a new perspective. 388 pp. Englisch.

This growth has greatly expanded our understanding of the electrical properties and ultrastructure of chemosensory organs, of the role of chemoreception in the control of behavior, of the organization of higher centers in the chemosensory pathways, and of the chemical constituents of mixtures of biologic significance. But one area where advances have been especially impressive is concerned with the properties of pheromones and substances with similar biologic effects. Pheromones are compounds, produced by certain animals, which have the effect of inducing one or more specific responses within members of the same or closely related species. Some of these substances-the 'primer' pheromones-act on the endocrine system, probably through the central nervous system. The pregnancy block induced in mice by the odor of strange males is a striking example. Others, such as 'signalling' or 'releaser' pheromones, elicit an immediate behavioral response. Sex attractants are prominent examples of this group. While the chemical identity of these compounds is known, in a relatively few cases (and these, mainly in insects) we now have extensive information about their impact on the receiving organism at the receptor, physiologic and behavioral levels. 428 pp. Englisch.

Today, we often blame a doctor's absence of that awareness on moral or ethical deficiency either in medical education or in the character of people who become physicians. An alternative explanation, however, is that doctors are just as moral, ethical, and concerned as ever before, but that a vast amount of additional new information has won the competition for attention. The data available to the old-fashioned doctor were a patient's history, phys ical examination, and 'personal profile,' together with a limited number of generally ineffectual therapeutic agents. A doctor today deals with an enormous array of additional new information, which comes from X-rays, biopsies, cytology, electrographic tracings, and the phantas magoria of contemporary laboratory tests, and the doctor must also be aware of a list of therapeutic possibilities that are both far more effective and far more extensive than ever before. 488 pp. Englisch.

New approaches to the overall problem have developed. Several chapters of the First Edition were not continued in this edition; most of those which were included have been revised thoroughly. A number of chapters by other contributors were invited to help round out the volume. New chapters are those by Glassman and Wilson; Squire and Barondes; Ungar; Jankovic; Hyden and Lange; Koenig; Appel; Rosenzweig, Bennett, and Diamond; and Deutsch. This edition should provide a representative view of the important research and theorizing which is occurring in this area. This volume is built around two important topics: Products of DNA Activa tion (Section II) and Macromolecules and Intracellular, Intercellular, and Synaptic Events (Section III). The Introduction (Section I) leads to these topics, and Models of Memory (Section IV) attempts to provide an integration of these topics with brain function. The preparation of this volume was facilitated by grants from the National Research Council (Canada) and by Contract No. Nom 4935(00) with the Physiological Psychology Division of the Office of Naval Research (U .S.A.) . 412 pp. Englisch.

Most extant tre atments of the subject are multi-authored, even when they deal with just one of these various subdivisions. Moreover, the corresponding specialists have seen the cancer problem as one within the purview of their own calling. In nature, however, the problem is a unity: its immunology, biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, for example, are closely interdependent. Con sequently, its proper appraisal requires detailed examination of all of the major parts, but with the primary aim of a single-minded and hence unified survey of the whole. The present work is an offering in this direction. It is addressed specifically to all practising oncologists, whether clinical or ex perimental, and generally to all serious students of the growth of oncology and medicine from ancient to modern times. 448 pp. Englisch.

Optical switching is a basic function for optical data processing, which is of technological interest because of its potential parallelism and its potential speed. Semiconductors which exhibit resonance enhanced optical nonlinearities in the frequency range close to the band edge are the most intensively studied materials for optical bistability and fast gate operation. Modern crystal growth techniques, particularly molecular beam epitaxy, allow the manufacture of semiconductor microstructures such as quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots in which the electrons are only free to move in two, one or zero dimensions, of the optically excited electron-hole pairs in these low respectively. The spatial confinement dimensional structures gives rise to an enhancement of the excitonic nonlinearities. Furthermore, the variations of the microstruture extensions, of the compositions, and of the doping offer great new flexibility in engineering the desired optical properties. Recently, organic chain molecules (such as polydiacetilene) which are different realizations of one dimensional electronic systems, have been shown also to have interesting optical nonlinearities. Both the development and study of optical and electro-optical devices, as well as experimental and theoretical investigations of the underlying optical nonlinearities, are contained in this book. 396 pp. Englisch.

Technical improvements in the detection of CIC in body fluids have resulted in data that indicate that CIC do occur in different types of cancer. In addition, tumor-associated antigens and antibodies have been detected in immune complexes of cancer patients' sera. Until recently the exact role and clinical relevance of immune complexes have been the subject of debate, partially because of the problems encountered in measuring immune complexes. But these problems are being confronted as more accurate measurement protocols are developed. Technical refinements, along with strict protocols, have provided evidence of heterogeneity in CIC, a factor that makes accurate detection of immune complexes in cancer patients difficult. Recent insights indicate that the measurement of immune complexes in cancer patients may be clinically useful not only as a tumor marker, but also in regard to the deranged immune response of tumor-bearing hosts and other disorders such as nephrotic syndrome, immune anemias, and clotting dysfunction. 300 pp. Englisch.

The present volume is the proceedings of that conference, and contains all manuscripts received prior to 1 August 1979, representing scientific contributions presented. A few manus cripts were not received, but for completeness the corresponding abstract is printed. No record was kept of the discussion, so that some of the flavor of the meeting is missing. This is par ticularly unfortunate in the case of some topics which were in a stage of rapid development and where the papers presented sti mulated much discussion - such as the sessions on spatial dis persion and resonance inelastic (Brillouin or Raman) scattering in crystals, enhanced Raman scattering from molecules on metal surfaces, and the onset of turbulence in fluids. The background and history of the US-USSR Seminar-Symposia on light scattering was given in the preface to the proceedings of the First Symposium held in Moscow May 1975, published as 'Theory of Light Scattering in Condensed Matter' ed. B. Bendow, J. L. Birman, V. M. Agranovich (Plenum Press, N. Y. 1976). Strong scientific interest on both sides in continuing this series resulted in a plan for the second symposium to be held in New York in 1977. For a variety of reasons it was necessary to cancel the planned 1977 event, almost at the last minute. 560 pp. Englisch.

It is now a major international forum, held every two years in Cape Sounion, Greece, in which the present and the future of this important area of research in drug carriers is discussed in great depth. Four previous ASls of the series dealt with drug carriers of natural and synthetic origin, their interaction with the biological milieu and with ways by which the latter influences such interaction. The present book contains the proceedings of the 5th NATO ASI 'Targeting of Drugs: Optimization Strategies' held in Cape Sounion during 24 June-5 July, 1989. Whereas the experiments demonstrated the existence of the first known neurohormones, the formulation of the concept of neurosecretion was of fundamental importance to further progress, and tribute must be paid to Ernst and Berta Scharrer. The recent proliferation of investigations into insect neurohormones has cre ated the need for an overall review of the data. Our knowledge of the subject is voluminous, and the evidence clearly demonstrates that neurohormones playa part in most insect regulatory processes. This book analyzes and synthesizes the data, starting from neurosecretion (i.e., source sites and release modes of neurohormones) and continuing through the various functions in which neurohormones have been shown to be involved: endocrine gland activity; diapause; reproduction; visceral muscle functioning; color change; behavior; water and ion balance; protein, sugar, and lipid metabo lism; and tanning and other processes occurring at the cuticle level. In each chapter, besides the experimental information, technical procedures as well as recent information concerning purification of the particular neurohor mones and their mode of action are reported. Numerous exhaustive tables allow the reader to get an overview of the matter while the major findings of the mo ment are presented in the conclusion of each chapter. 372 pp. Englisch.

There was agreement in most instances that we are facing some kind of publication explosion, and that the present type of compact and personalized reviews may be of help, from both a conceptual and a purely informational standpoint. The aims of the series were, and still are, to focus attention on the rapidly changing fields within the realm of immunology, and to present in each chapter the summation of results generated by an investigator or group of Investigators, either as an analysis of their own work or as a correlation of such work with the general field in question. The present volume does not differ in its construction from its predecessors, although it does concentrate on a single target, the T lymphocyte and its biology. The selection of subjects as well as contributors has been the sole responsi bility of this editor; however, the actual format and length of the individual contributions was left to the discretion and inspiration of the different authors. The first ion source was invented by J. J. Thomson in 1910. This ion source became the basis for the first widespread application of ion sources in mass spectrographs and mass spectrometers. The second important application of ion sources is ion accelerators, which since the beginning of the 1930s have been employed in research on nuclear reactions and are now used in industry and medicine. A third application of ion sources is in systems for isotope separation and re search on the interaction of atomic particles with solids (1940s). The result of this research and development is the use of ion sources in semiconductor doping, decontamination of surfaces, and micromachining of surfaces (1960s and' 1970s), which is a fourth area of applications for ion sources. The heating of plasmas in magnetic confinement devices to thennonuclear temperatures (100-1000 MK) with the aid of megawatt beams of hydrogen and deuterium ions and atoms has become a fifth promising area of application for ion sources which can produce ion beams with steady-state currents of up to 100 A. Finally, experimental and industrial research are under way on the alloying of metals and the fabrication of coatings which greatly improve the physical and chemical properties of metals. These coatings can increase the hardness, high temperature corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of metals, and can enhance or reduce friction, etc. 244 pp. Englisch.

This meeting was one of the satellite symposia to the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology (Tokyo, 1981). Calcium ion is a well known intracellular messenger. Since troponin and calmodulin were found to be intracellular medi ators of a number of actions of Ca++, the functions of this ion, with relevance to its intracellular receptive proteins, have received a great deal of attention from workers in the fields of biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, physiology, endocrinology, clinical medicine, and related fields. The symposium was designed to illuminate new aspects of this rapidly growing field of research and extensive discus sions on various topics were carried out. This volume contains all the papers presented plus the abstracts of the Poster Presentations. Both researchers and students should find the data and references of considerable value in their studies. We gratefully acknowledge the sponsorship of the Committees of the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology and the Yamada Science Foundation. We also thank Dr. S. Akabori for his encouragement and support. Special thanks are extented to Ms. S. Ikukawa, Ms. A. Yoshikawa, M. Ohara and all our colleagues who contributed much to the symposium. We also extend our appreciation to Mrs. F. Comes and Patricia M. Vann for the editing and preparation of the manuscript in its final form. 492 pp. Englisch.

Virology, as a science, having passed only recently through its descriptive phase of naming and num bering, has probably reached that stage at which relatively few new truly new-viruses will be discovered. Triggered by the intellectual probes and techniques of molecular biology, genetics, biochemical cytology, and high resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, the field has experienced a genuine information explosion. Few serious attempts have been made to chronicle these events. This comprehensive series, which will comprise some 6000 pages in a total of about 18 volumes, represents a commitment by a large group of active investigators to analyze, digest, and expostulate on the great mass of data relating to viruses, much of which is now amorphous and disjointed, and scattered throughout a wide literature. In this way, we hope to place the entire field in perspective, and to develop an invalua ble reference and sourcebook for researchers and students at all levels. This series is designed as a continuum that can be entered anywhere, but which also provides a logical progression of developing facts and integrated concepts. 480 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The tissue culture approach to the study of membrane properties of excitable cells has progressed beyond the technical problems of culture methodology. Recent developments have fostered substantive contributions in research con cerned with the physiology, pharmacology, and biophysics of cell membranes in tissue culture. The scope of this volume is related to the application of tissue culture methodology to developmental processes and cellular mechanisms of electrical and chemical excitability. The major emphasis will be on the body of new biological information made available by the analytic possibilities inherent in the tissue culture systems. Naturally occurring preparations of excitable cells are frequently of suf ficient morphological complexity to compromise the analysis of the data obtained from them. Some of the limitations associated with dissected prepa rations have to do with the direct visualization of and access to the cell(s) in question and maintenance of steady-state conditions for prolonged periods of time. Since preparations in tissue culture can circumvent these problems, it is feasible to analyze the properties of identifiable cells, grown either singly or in prescribed geometries, as well as to follow the development of cellular inter actions. A crucial consideration in the use of cultured preparations is that they must faithfully capture the phenomenon of interest to the investigator. This and other potential limitations on the methodology are of necessary concern in the present volume. 444 pp. Englisch.

The quantitative, instrument-based measurements and physical models of. geophysics, together with advances in technology, have radically transformed the way in which the Earth, and especially its crust, is described. The study of the magnetism of the rocks of the Earth's crust has played a major part in this transformation. Rocks, or more specifically their constituent magnetic minerals, can be regarded as a measuring instrument provided by nature, which can be employed in the service of the earth sciences. Thus magnetic minerals are a recording magnetometer; a goniometer or protractor, recording the directions of flows, fields and forces; a clock; a recording thermometer; a position recorder; astrain gauge; an instrument for geo logical surveying; a tracer in climatology and hydrology; a tool in petrology. No instrument is linear, or free from noise and systematic errors, and the performance of nature's instrument must be assessed and certified. This has been the task of the research worker in rock and mineral magnetism. 236 pp. Englisch.

California. U.S.A . on March 20. 2] and 22, 1973. The symposium was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and was designed to bring together a group that represented the domi nant cross section of international research in this area. The idea for the conference originated as ONR recognized a potentially interesting area that, to date. had not had the benefit of a co ordinating symposium and/or a book published on the specific sub ject. In addition to the formal presentation of papers - informal open discussions followed - the symposium included two stimulating workshops. An abundance of impromptu exchange filled unscheduled periods. Many of the contributors have incorporated in their pa pers the ideas and points raised in discussions following formal presentation and at other times. The reader thus actually profits from the various discussions throughout the meeting. The two half-day workshops were directed toward the subjects of sampling and concentrating suspended materials and in situ in strumentation. I have summarized the discussions from the two workshops for the reader and have correlated the material wherever possible in an introductory chapter. I have also included intro ductory material to acquaint the newcomer with the general field. 332 pp. Englisch.

Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, March 20-22, 1972. These Proceedings contain all papers presented at the Symposium together with a transcript of the concluding panel discussion and a comprehensive bibliography of the field. The Symposium dealt with complexity studies closely re lated to how computations are actually performed on computers. Although this area of study has not yet found an appropriate or generally accepted name, the area is recognizable by the signif icant commonality in problems, approaches, and motivations. The area can be described and delineated by examples such as the following. (1) Determining lower bounds on the number of operations or steps required for computational solutions of specific problems such as matrix and polynomial calculations, sorting and other combinatorial problems, iterative com putations, solving equations, and computer resource allocation. (2) Developing improved algorithms for the solution of such problems which provide good upper bounds on the number of required operations, along with experimental and v vi PREFACE theoretical evidence concerning the efficiency and numer ical accuracy of those algorithms. (3) Studying the effects on the efficiency of computation brought about by variations in sequencing and the intro duction of parallelism. 240 pp. Englisch.

Even restricting time to the past decade or so and approaching only the biomedical sciences, one still encounters a flood of information in this relatively young research area. The ories and ideas abound as though each researcher provides one of his own. This might well be expected; aging is an exceedingly complicated series of crossroads involving trails and even superhighways. Each specialist has a peephole (society, body, organ, tissue, cell, or-especially in modern biology-cellular organelles, macromolecules, and even molecules) and the views of the crossroads are obviously different. Hence, the num ber of observations just about equals the number of independent ideas put forward. It is natural to seek from highly specialized knowledge a fundamental understand ing of aging through the modern research trends in biology that focus on events at the cellular, subcellular, macromolecular, and molecular levels. The ultimate clues must lie there-with one serious complication: There are numerous cell types in any body and each cell type is a very complex machine of its own. Additionally, there are potential repercussions in that different cells, tissues, and even molecules have effects on one another. This is indeed a confusing situation, and one for which we must seek reliable answers, provided that we can take a step back and provide a generalized view. 408 pp. Englisch.

This volume is no exception. It imme diately proved its usefulness to psychiatric clinicians upon its publication six years ago, and it is not surprising to find it now entering a new phase of life in a second edition. The many and significant changes that the reader will find herein reflect not only the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of psy chopharmacology but also the editors' wise awareness of the need to incorpo rate that knowledge into clinical practice. Important new sections have been added on the management of elderly patients, on the pharmacological approach to those with temporal lobe epilepsy, and on the use of psychoactive medications during pregnancy. The existing clinical sections have been expanded, and the format has been altered to make the volume more practi cally useful for the harried clinician. Most important of all, the discussions of individual drugs have been carefully revised to update information about those medications that have stood the test of time and to include those newer pharmacological agents that have appeared on the clinical scene since the publication of the first edition. This last task has been significantly aided by the addition of Dr. Alan J. Gelenberg to the family of editors; his clinical and scientific knowledge nicely complements that of Drs. Bassuk and Schoonover, and its influence is evident throughout. 456 pp. Englisch.

This comprehensive review and summary of superconducting ma terials was originally prepared by the Russian authors in 1969 and has been specifically updated for this series. It is the most thorough review of the literature on this subject that has been made to date. Since advances in the development and use of new superconducting materials are largely associated with the general state and level in the development of the physical theory of superconductivity, the physical chemistry of metals, metallography, metal physics, tech nical physics, and manufacturing techniques, it is hoped that this monograph will provide the stimulus for further advances in all aspects of this exciting field. The editors express their appreciation to the authors, the translators, and Plenum Publishing Corporation for their assistance and continued interest in making this worthy addition to the series possible. 476 pp. Englisch.
