Taylor had first visited Japan as part of Perry's expedition of 1854 and Griffis updates the account with new information but preserving the best of the original. A good picture of life as it was with travels throughout the country including Yedo, Yokohama, an ascent of Fuji-Yama, Kamakura, Tokio (Tokyo), Echizen, etc and which includes Consul-general Harris's account of his journey to Yedo. Charles Alexander Sheldon (1867-1928), Ingenieur, Jäger und Naturschützer, der sich aufgrund von lukrativen Investitionen schon mit 36 von der Lohnarbeit verabschieden konnte und fortan den Erkundungen, der Jagd aber auch dem Schutz der Natur widmen konnte. Sein besonderes Interesse galt der Gattung der Dickhornschafe, denen er von Alaska bis nach Mexiko folgte. Deren Vorkommen studierte er in der Wildnis des Oberen Yukon allerdings erschoss er auch eine beträchtliche Anzahl. Er setzte sich vehement für den Schutz der Region des Denali (höchster Berg Alaskas) ein, welches nach elf Jahren unermüdlichen Einsatz, dazu führte, dass 1917 der Mount McKinley National Park" ausgerufen wurde, welcher später unter der Regierung von Barack Obama in Denali National Park" umbenannt wurde. Ein Berg im heutigen Nationalpark ist nach Sheldon genannt, ebenso ein Naturschutzgebiet in Nevada.
