He received his pilot's wings in Canada in 1942 and completed his training in England before joining number 106 Squadron, 5 Group, Bomber Command in October 1943 to fly Lancaster's. He operated between October 1943 and March 1944 on deep penetration raids in atrocious weather conditions - mostly during the battle of Berlin. He was shot down on his 22nd operation. Dick had a miraculous escape trying to control his blazing Lancaster carrying a full bomb load, when the petrol tanks exploded they hurled him unconscious into the night sky. After spending several months in P.O.W. Hospitals, Dick was transferred to the notorious Stalag Luft III prison camp - north compound (from where, in Silesia, fifty officers were murdered after trying to escape in March 1944). In January 1945, the prisoners were evacuated in advance of the Russian winter offensive. After seven days marching in snow and ice in sub-zero temperatures, they arrived at Lukenwalde which was a camp for war prisoners - including Russian and forced labour. When the camp was taken by the Russians in April 1945, Dick spent many weeks in their hands before being repatriated. Ref JJJ 7.
