The ecclesiastical remains from pre~Reformation Scotland are plentiful though often much less known than their English counterparts. Many of them reach back to Celtic times and many, like the Abbey of Iona and the collegiate Church of St Giles in Edinburgh, are now in full use by worshipping communities and are familiar to tourists. With two exceptions where access is forbidden, Mr New has visited every building and site he describes. The great number of parish kirks that used to be served by their own 'colleges' of priests are all included and a vision is conjured up of a thriving network of religious pre~Reformation establishments providing service and centres of learning and prayer for a nation beset by constant power struggles and invasions. The monastic foundations since the Reformation in Scotland are sadly few but are fully covered as well. The reader will learn of the restored Priory of Pluscarden as well as the less time~worn buildings of Dumfries, Fort Augustus and Nunraw. Here is a compact book for the historically, spiritually and archaeologically curious. It is without rival and is plentifully illustrated with maps and plans. A glossary and useful appendices are also included. Anthony New is the author of Constable's guides to The Abbeys of England and Wales and The Cathedrals of Britain. He is a practising architect specialising in ecclesiastical and restoration work. Front cover: St Martin's Cross and Iona Abbey (photograph A.F. Kersting). Backcover:The Crown, St Giles, Edinburgh (photograph Anthony New).

Hardback. Etat : Mint. Etat de la jaquette : Mint. First Edition. SHOOTING LEAVE Spying Out Central Asia in the Great Game. John Ure. Constable Publishing, London 2009 First Edition ISBN 9781849010405 276pp Hardback. This mint copy is bound in burgundy cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, tight, white, bri…ght and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is also in mint condition. Snow leopards and Cossacks can both be dangerous. But to young British officers in India in the nineteenth century there was only one thing more exciting than shooting wild game in the mountains and steppes of Central Asia, and that was spying out those uncharted lands and impeding the advance of Tsarist Russia towards the frontiers of the British Raj. When the two activities were combined - in what was euphemistically called 'shooting leave' - adventures followed thick and fast. "Shooting Leave" tells the thrilling story of the dashing cavalry officers who volunteered for these adventures. They were individuals of talent and courage, but also of disturbing prejudice, aristocratic arrogance, missionary zeal or trigger-happy temperament. But whatever their specific task, one factor remained common to all officers sent out on covert and exploratory missions: they were expendable. Here they are brought to life as characters in their own right, as well as players in the Great Game. Ref LL4.
