While Shaivism contains within it a number of traditions and theologies Shaivas will regard Shiva as the transcendent Lord who creates the cosmos maintains it and destroys it over and over again. He also conceals himself through his magical power (maya) and reveals himself through grace. Most Shaivas believe in the standard Hindu doctrine that the soul travels through many lifetimes in the cycle of reincarnation (Samsara) and that the kind of rebirth the soul experiences is determined by its action (karma). The ultimate goal of life is salvation or liberation (Moksha) from the cycle of reincarnation attained by a degree of effort but ultimately through Shiva's grace. The worship of Shiva is very ancient in India. Hymns to Rudra a name of Shiva are found in the Veda the earliest Hindu scriptures regarded as revelation (c. 1500 BCE) though worship of Shiva may have its origins in the Indus Valley civilisation (c. 2000 BCE). This is concise manual to initiate the reader before taking up the more sophisticated texts related to Saivism. 260 pp.…

In this little treatise an attempt has been made to give an account of the life and teachings of Mahavira, the last Tirthankara of the Jains, from the original Buddhist and Jain texts. A comparative study of both the texts helps greatly in elucidating some knotty points of his life and doctrine. We think that it will be found useful by all persons interested in the study of Jainism. (jacket).…

This book was written by Sir Thomas Aronol who lived and worked a professor of philosophy in Lahore India now Pakistan He was widely traveled in the Muslim world This book now roughly 100 years old is still relevant today perhaps more so now than everHe states his case that Islam was not spread by the sword as is so stereotypically thought by many; but through preaching and daily commerce While there has been military conquest by Islamic nations the actual conversions to the Islamic faith were not done by the sword This is a tough concept to grasp Considering that Islam is considered an entire way of life the military conquests are not outside of the realm of IslamThe division between religion and politics leads to the schizophrenia we see today in many a Western nation?s bumbling other countries most recently America in Iraq For the sake of analogy let us ask that if the citizens of Iraq were for example to convert to Christianity could we say that they were converted by the sword Or did the conversions come once the military maneuvering was done If a host of missionaries ride in one the coattails of the military would history lead us to believe that conversions were done by the sword Arnold makes his case that it was not the sword that led to the majority of conversions to Islam It was the strength of the faith of the ordinary individuals who lived it The book is not light reading and is very dense but it is interesting and it is definitely worth reading to get some balance on how the spread of Islam is viewed He is not naively glowing in his approach but is very balanced in his report Vital for those who really want to understand truth on their own terms 468 pp.…

Hardcover. Etat : As New. "Little further advance can be made in the interpretation of the Qur'an or of the life of Muhammad, until an exhaustive study has been made of the vocabulary of the Qur'an. The Qur'an is the first Arabic book, for through there was earlier poetry, it was not written down till much later. For the interpretation of this first Arabic book, we have been content until recently to turn to the classical commentaries, but the tendency of the commentators is to interpret the book in the light of the Arabic language of their own day, and with few exceptions their philological lucubrations are of more interest for the study of the development of Muslim thought about the Qur'an, than they are for settling the meaning the words must have had for the prophet and for those who listened to his utterances. This present essay attempts to make a contribution to the subject by studying a number of the non-Arabic elements in the Qur'anic vocabulary. Emphasis has been placed in recent years on the too long forgotten fact that Arabia at the time of Muhammad was not isolated from the rest of the world. There was at that time full and constant contact with the surrounding peoples of Syria, Persia and Abyssinia and through intercourse there was a natural interchange of vocabulary. The book's essential focus is to place in the hands of students a list of these foreign words which are recognized as such by our modern scholarship, with an indication of their probable origin and of the sources to which the student may turn for fuller discussion." In presenting to the public this volume the execution of which in conformity with the comprehensive plan developed in this volume has been deemed by many impracticable the author cannot fail to be influenced by sentiments of a mingled character -- by a feeling of diffidence when he reflects on his unfitness for a task that may perchance be rightly deemed gigantic -- by a partial satisfaction accompanied by hope when he considers that he may have to some extent succeeded in an object which others of far greater ability but perhaps less patience have successively abandoned in that he should be the instrument however humble of describing the components of an empire that considered in any point of view is as unrivalled for its grandeur and fame as for the spirit of wisdom and justice by which its affairs are administered 410 pp.…

Ajouter au panierHardbound. Etat : As New. New. From the Introduction This book The Divine Wisdom of the Dravida Saints is really a series of discourses on the Highest Mystery viz. Wisdom matured into Love of God. This in other words is no other than the fullest blooming of the lotus heart of man thirsting for spiritual communion with God. This again in other words means the infinite expansion or development of the consciousness of man so as to fully realise what it is for man to infinitely love his God and what it is for God to infinitely love His own creature or Divine love Filial and parental. This book treats of both these kinds of love. The present book may be taken as an interesting Prelude to the Bhagavad Vishayam from which in the shape of topics it is drawn and arranged. The plan followed is a division of the book into a number of short topics each complete and independent in itself and illustrated by conversations and anecdotes thus for the first time giving to the Western world an idea of this Eastern method of inculcating spiritual instruction. Another novel feature of this book consists in its having copious footnotes which are mostly correspondence selected from out of a wide range of works of Western Divines so as to show how religious ideas are found to have unity and universality how it may be seen that one raceless and countryless God indeed rules over all races and all countries and how the Highest Mystery of religion consists in the fervid over mastering intensity of rapt love to God which is the highest wisdom the highest mysticism and occultism leading to liberation and beatitude or communion with God. 216 pp.…

The Vedas the Institutes of Manu are the great authorities for the learned and only through the learned for the mass of the people. But the Mahabharata and the Ramayana are wrought into the very life of every Indian man woman and child. Despite the influence wielded by these two books however their moulding power on life is not so great as once it was. If we could bring back their influence on character we should indeed life our Indian upwards. They hold up to us ideals of conduct virtues acted out on life's stage as practical examples for old and young alike for husbands and wives parents and children brothers and sister friends and enemies. As we study character after character the lessons each is meant to teach and their value to us in modern India. 188 pp.…

Ajouter au panierFifth Edition, Revised. Contents 1 Introduction I The Material of Music 2 The Phenomena of sound in general 3 Special characteristics of musical sounds 4 Theoretical nature of the sounds of musical instrumentsTaking the word philosophy in its broadest sense a philosophical study of music must include an investigation of the means by which musical sounds are produced and propagated in other words the science of acoustics which is a branch of physics of the means by which music is heard by the human ear which is a question of anatomy and physiology of the mental impressions produced by music which in the first place is part of the study of experimental psychology and lastly of the principles which have guided musicians in the pursuit of musical composition and musical performance as an artDr Pole?s book was written with the object of instituting a philosophical inquiry into the general structure of music in order to ascertain how far it was based on physical data or how far it had been the result of aesthetic or artistic consideration He arrives at the conclusion that although the fabric of music has its foundations laid in natural phenomena yet its superstructure is almost entirely a work of artDr Pole?s book is therefore occupied to a large extent with purely physical investigations He bases himself on the results obtained by Helmholtz whose object it was to discover a physical and physiological basis for the theory of musicIt is a very remarkable fact that this book which bears the impress of its original date on almost every page should still be readable with pleasure and with profit half a century after it was written What makes it readable literary style and the invariably skeptical and scientific temper of the author?s mindPole sets a valuable example to any one who might set out to write a philosophy of music from the standpoint of the present day Jacket 332 pp.…

Ajouter au panierIn the year 1905 Ellsworth Huntington undertook a journey Chinese Turkestan from India to Siberia across the Central Asian land mass which was yet unmarked by the footprint of any western traveler. These pages bring to life a description of that historic journey of the culture and way of life of peoples hitherto unknown to the rest of the world. It contains some of the earliest and most interesting ethnographic details of the peoples living across the Sind Kashmir valley Himalayas and the Chinese plateau. With tremendous descriptive skill the author has etched out the minutest details of a bygone civilization bringing out vividly all aspects of life including material culture mythology pre history rituals and social practices of those times. 416 pp.…
