XX [From the poet's introduction] The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, by Japanese forces resulted in a frenzy of panic on the West Coast of the United states. 110,000 Japanese Americans, of whom some 2/3 were American citizens, were removed from their homes and communities and incarcerated in camps situated in deserts. On a sunny February day I visited the site of Manzanar relocation camp in the Owens valley of California. The site is beside a highway. The Sierra Nevada rise white and stunning behind the campsite. The mountains must have been a feast as well as a philosophical concept for people incarcerated. They might look to the mountains' ongoing existence after the little, often terrible, lives men lead. Or they might brood about free air, their own barbed wire and watched. Although the camp I have written about takes the Manzanar as its location, I have not written the Manzanar story. I hope I have written about what might have happened or been felt by those in all the concentration camps set up during World War II for American citizens, not a single one of whom was found to have practiced espionage. XX Geraldine Clinton Little (September 20, 1923 - March 7, 1997) was a poet born in Northern Ireland. Emigrating to the United States with her family at age 2, she spent her life in the United States. She published ten books, and her stories and poems appeared in over 400 journals. Little moved to Mount Holly Township, New Jersey in 1956 with her husband Robert K. Little, an inventor and President and CEO of RKL Controls, Inc. Little's published works include eight volumes of poetry. Her career as a poet, fiction writer, playwright, and college instructor started late in life, after she graduated from Goddard College in Vermont in 1970. She completed her bachelor's degree in English while raising three sons who were in high school at the time. She received her master's degree from Trenton State College, now the College of New Jersey, in 1977. Her poetry went from haiku to book-length poems, including HAKUGAI, which gives voice to the 110,000 Japanese-Americans interned in prison camps during World War II, according to a 1984 review. It said, Through dramatic monologues, snatches of conversation and journal notes, the prisoners' lost words are heard again. The world of their hakugai [persecution] is resurrected.…
