Hardcover. Etat : Poor. Etat de la jaquette : Poor. London: Printed for T. Cadell, successor to Mr. Millar, and D. Wilson and G. Nicol, 1768. Third Edition. Octavo. xxiv, 311 pp. Contemporary calf binding with raised bands to spine, now extensively deteriorated. An important eighteenth-century work of clinical and epidemiological medicine based on George Cleghorn's observations while serving as an army surgeon on Minorca from 1744 to 1749. Cleghorn combines detailed descriptions of the island's climate, geography, agriculture, inhabitants and endemic diseases with firsthand clinical observations of epidemic illness. The medical portion discusses intermittent and tertian fevers, dysentery and other infectious diseases, drawing upon several years of systematic observations of weather, seasonal disease patterns, clinical courses and post-mortem findings. The 1768 third edition is bibliographically recorded as ESTC T144280, with xxiv, 311 pages. Medical Significance Cleghorn's work occupies an important place in the development of clinical epidemiology and tropical medicine. He attempted to correlate weather, season, environment and local conditions with patterns of disease, recording observations made during active medical practice among both British troops and the inhabitants of Minorca. The work is cited as Garrison-Morton 1674. Cleghorn gave important descriptions of diseases and conditions that had received little previous attention, including epidemic jaundice, and included accounts based upon numerous post-mortem examinations. The book is also notable for its extensive introductory survey of Minorca—covering climate, plants, animals, food, wine, customs and endemic illnesses—making it of interest beyond medicine to collectors of eighteenth-century Mediterranean history and natural history. Condition Poor, but complete. This copy has suffered major structural binding failure. Both original calf boards are completely detached. The text block has broken into multiple separate sections, although the book has been checked and is complete. Original calf spine is extensively deteriorated with substantial leather loss and exposed binding structure. An old paper covering/repair remains around portions of the spine and is itself heavily torn, chipped and partially detached. Boards show substantial rubbing, scuffing, edge wear and leather loss. Spine leather is dry, cracked and fragmentary. Internally, the leaves show age toning, scattered foxing, staining and occasional edge wear consistent with an eighteenth-century working medical book. Title page remains present and legible. Text remains usable and complete. Offered strictly as a complete but broken copy and an excellent candidate for professional conservation or rebinding. Please examine all photographs carefully; they form an essential part of the condition description. Collector Appeal It is an original 1768 third edition of a recognized Garrison-Morton title, published only seventeen years after the first edition of 1751. The work remained influential enough to go through multiple eighteenth- and early nineteenth century editions and was later issued in America with additional material. Shipping / Returns Carefully packed with all detached components individually protected and secured to prevent further damage in transit. Shipped in a sturdy box with tracking. International shipping available. Additional photographs available upon request. Returns accepted within the AbeBooks 30-day return period. SCI 4a.…

Covers worn and corners rubbed round. Ownership inscription of 'William Lindley' of Chatton, dated 1737 to free front and rear endpaper and fly-leaf. Leaves toned and with a touch of foxing and damp-staining and a little general thumbing and marking. Illustrated with several copper plates engraved by David Lockley. 7 1/2". The Rev. Michael Malard, a French Protestant refugee, was tutor for that language to the princesses, daughters of George II for whom he wrote this instructional book. The book was intended to provide universal knowledge and to 'put them into a condition of being never seduced by Popery' 'to make godly and understanding youths' 'to make greater improvements in the French tongue' and as a 'Traveller's Guide into the finest Towns and Places of Europe, Asia, and Africa'. Contents include scientific subjects such as 'Of Clouds' 'Of the Thunderbolt' etc, chapters on travel, venerated cities and such additions as 'Of the Parisian Gang', occult matters, eg - 'Of Witches, Charmers, Enchanters, Chiromancers, and Necromancers.' 'If one can raise the Devil with Agrippa's Book' and lots of chapters concerned with Popery. This title is described in 'A Biographical History of England. Volume 3' by Rev. Mark Noble - 1806 as "now seldom to be met with; as, besides being a sort of school-book, in which service numbers of the copies were very likely to be worn out, it is a work that would certainly be destroyed by the Roman Catholics whenever it came in their way". David Lockley (illustrateur).…

8vo, engraved title page and pp. [v]-xxxi, [iii] errata, 223; bound without the half title; engraved title page a bit stained and foxed; else a very good copy, uncut in boards (presumably original), rebacked in cloth (spine now worn). First and only edition. Little seems to be known about Benjamin Johnson: this appears to be his only book, and it was issued by subscription, the names on the list mainly being from Doncaster itself. It seems fair to assume that Johnson was a local cleric although not (it would seem) the vicar of Doncaster Minster. He appears to have been patronised by Earl Fitzwilliam, to whom he dedicates this collection, who lived at Wentworth Woodhouse, and who perhaps gave him his living. The contents are more light-hearted than one might expect from a clergyman: no biblical paraphrases and few hymns, but plenty of 'Stories, Fables and Songs', which occupy pp. 69-146; and there is a section of poems on 'Love and its Consequences' (pp. 147-176), as well as more solemn titles such as 'The Folly of Human Wisdom' and 'Slavery of the Passions'. Quite scarce: ESTC has eight copies in the UK, and six in North America.…

Etat : Fine. Two works in one vol. First work: viii, 144pp., 8vo. [Second work:] [4], 76; [6], 47, [1]; 32, 17-113, [1]pp., 8vo. With the work s original title-leaf "Dissertations on Theatrical Subjects, . by Mr. Cibber" dated 1756 bound after the first p. 76 and the final leaf containing an advertisement for Cibber s "Cephalic Snuff" with errata on the verso; a contemporary binder s blank leaf between the two works inscribed "Eliz. Debonnaire." Nicely bound together in mid-nineteenth-century half calf, spine gilt; a bookplate removed from the front pastedown. One of two editions of the first work; in this one p.16 begins: "ther s own son" and has pp. iv and 126-127 correctly numbered. After the huge success of Colley Cibber s Apology in 1740, his son Theophilus decided to climb on the bandwagon and began taking subscriptions for his own autobiography. Fielding and Ralph upset the apple cart by rushing out the present spoof, with their joint authorship recently demonstrated by Joel Schechter in Eighteenth-Century Brechtians: Theatrical Satire in the Age of Walpole (2016). The second work is Cibber s attempt at a comprehensive survey of English theatrical history, albeit vitiated by Cibber s animosity towards rival playwrights and theatre managers, especially David Garrick, who gets much criticism in the dissertations and in a separate "Epistle from Mr. Theophilus Cibber, to David Garrick, Esq." Cibber was both a rake and something of a buffoon. Pope, who of course made Cibber s father, Colley Cibber, King of the Dunces in the revised Dunciad, described Theophilus (in both earlier and later versions) as . . . that youth who takes the foremost place, And thrusts his person full into your face. With all thy Father s virtues blessed, be born! And a new Cibber shall the stage adorn. In the poem One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Eight, Pope is even more explicit: . . . shall the Dignity of Vice be lost? Ye Gods! shall Cibber s Son, without rebuke Swear like a Lord? or Rich out-whore a Duke.…
