A very nicely presentable first edition book with photograph and advance review slip. Front corner tips minutely crimped, a touch of yellowing to the spine, else square, firm and near fine in pretty green linen with blue embossed sea-wave lines below flying bird image to the front cover, blue wave lines and titles to the spine; in a Haberstock illustrated very good plus dust jacket with some fading to the spine panel, a chip and rubs to the lower spine end, tiny tears and creases to the upper spine edge, and two tiny tears to the rear panel's lower edge; original printed $3.75 price still intact to the front inner flap. Dorso con titolo e piccola figura di rosa impressi in oro, taglio di testa dorato. Sovraccoperta illustrata a colori da Arthur Rackham, cui si debbono le sguardie figurate in verde e in bianco, le illustrazioni in b.n. nt. e f.t. e le 12 tavv. a colori f.t., una delle quali all'antiporta. Frontespizio in rosso e nero con vignetta in tinta rossa dello stesso Rackham. Stato di nuovo. Prima edizione americana con le tavole di Rackham del capolavoro di Oliver Goldsmith, The Vicar of Wakefield, uno dei più famosi romanzi settecenteschi, apparso primamente nel 1766. Di intonazione prevalentemente didascalico-sentimentale, il libro, che conobbe immensa fortuna in tutta Europa, rimane il prototipo del romanzo borghese dell'Inghilterra del XVIII secolo.
