Twenty-three lines of text in a secretarial hand, signed at foot by 'Thos. Steele' and 'J. Hiley Addington', both signatures accompanied by seals under paper. To the left of the signatures: 'Sealed and Delivered being first duly Stamped in the presence of | Wm. Wood'. (Wood was a cashier in the Army Pay Office.) At foot of page: 'Entered in the Office for Auditing the Public Accounts 10th. May 1803 | Thos Gibbes' (Gibbes was a clerk to Lord Sondes at the Office of Auditor of the Imprests) and 'Entered in the Office of the Paymaster General of the Forces the 6th. June 1803. | A. H. Bradshaw'. The document begins: 'Know all Men by these Presents that We the Right Honorable Thomas Steele & John Hiley Addington Paymaster [sic] General of His Majesty's Forces as well within Great Britain as without (that part of the United Kingdom called Ireland excepted) have authorize and empowered and by these presents do authorize and empower Gavin Hamilton Esqre. For Us and in Our Names and stead to pay the Subsistence Contingent and Extraordinary Expences of His Majesty's Forces, and also the Pay of the Staff Officers now and for the time being serving in the Island of Ceylon'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.…

Letterbooks were the copy machines of their day. Businessmen and others used letterbooks to keep records of their correspondence. The Copying Books offered here were made by the William Mann Co. of Philadelphia. The chemically treated copying papers are thin, smooth, and translucent to enable reading of the text from the side opposite of the ink transfer. There are a few torn sheets, but the paper is surprisingly strong. It has a fine, crepe-like, wrinkly texture. A blotting paper was placed under a leaf, the written letter placed on top of the leaf and water applied with a brush. The three papers were placed in a press and the writing was transferred to the treated page. The Grass Valley Gold Extracting Co. was incorporated in December of 1890 with Capital stock of $200,000. (Sacramento Daily Union, 11 December 1890). It offered Hydraulic Chlorination as an efficient method of extracting gold from difficult ores, sands, mud and water. The method had been patented by Scotsman James Holms Pollok of Glasgow, and most of the money for Grass Valley provided by Scottish investors. It had been used successfully in New Zealand and South Africa. The chemistry was tricky the chemist typically had to be well versed in the method. Manager Higginbottom s letterbook begins September 2, 1891; 65 pages out of 695 are used. His correspondence is primarily with backers in Edinburgh. There are long letters, with some drawings, describing the equipment being installed, technological issues, and problems that have arisen. Scattered within are bitter complaints about his employees laziness, incompetence, absence without leave, drunkenness, which are holding up the completion of the infrastructure and keeping potential customers away. Many letters complain about unpaid bills and ask Edinburgh for more money to be telegraphed. Eventually Higginbottom faults his assistant Holms with protecting the guilty employees. He must have known that Holms, born in Glasgow in 1868, and John Holms Pollok, the inventor of this version of the chlorination process, also born in Glasgow in 1868, were probably related. Holms book begins a bit earlier, August 18, 1891 and covers 235 of 500 available pages. Holms is handling a lot of business with bankers, vendors, and customers, most of the business end of the operation with little about the technological issues. Scattered in are letters to Manager Higginbottom that employees are complaining about Higginbottom s treatment of them and threatening to quit. Eventually many of Holms letters are to vendors who are wanting to be paid. On September 24, 1892, Holms takes over the Higginbottom book and writes updates for Edinburgh. Higginbottom had either quit or been fired. Both books end on or near February 25, 1892, Holms letter of February 5th the most revealing The Editor, Dear Sir, Please be good enough to insert the following advertisement in your paper For sale. First Class Crushing Plant, Kraus Rolls, Breaker, Screens, Fan, Dynamo, Elevator, etc. Only crushed 50 tons . . Bound in half red leather and cloth, worn but still soundly bound. The great majority of the letter sheets are Very Good to Fine, and quite legible.…

A very nice item relating to one of the greatest and best-loved of all cricketers: his signature to a scorecard of his final innings in first-class cricket, in which he scored a hundred, accompanied by a newspaper cutting describing the event. Official scorecard with serial number, printed on both sides of a 24 x 12.5 cm piece of card. Priced at twopence, and headed: 'This card does not necessarily include the fall of the last wicket | 2d. Lords [MCC device] Ground | Middlesex v. Surrey | Saturday & Monday, August 28, 30, 1937. (Three-day Match.)'. On reverse is a list of 'Matches for the Season at Lord's, 1937.', followed by details of 'Elementary Schoolboys' Matches at Lord's', topped and tailed by advertisements. The scorecard has been filled-in in manuscript, completing details of the Surrey first innings (all out for 509) and with Middlesex replying with a first innings of 377 for 6 at the end of the day. '4 Hendren, E.' is recorded in manuscript as being out 'c. Fishlock, b. Squires 103', and beside this he has written his signature: 'E Patsy Hendren/'. The next man in is '5 Compton, D.', who was 'c. Gregory b. Parker 28'. In manuscript at the head of the page: 'Patsy Hendren's last century in first-class cricket. | August 30, 1937.' The scorecard is accompanied by a 24 x 6 cm newspaper cutting of a report titled: '"Patsy" Goes Out with a Big Knock | Wonderful Farewell to Most Popular Man In Cricket | ("Universe" Sports Correspondent)'. An appreciative article with a caricature of Hendren, describing 'The unprecedented reception accorded "Patsy" Hendren at Lord's on Monday, on the occasion of his last appearance for Middlesex in a county championship match'. Hendren was 'Cheered all the way to the wicket and there cheered again by the Surrey players [.] When he made the stroke which brought him into three figures, the delight of the spectators knew no bounds. They cheered and clapped for several minutes and then sang together "For he's a jolly good fellow."' The latter part of the article describes Hendren's 'Great Career': 'He will go down in cricket history as the most popular player of all time. | Next season "Patsy" will start coaching at Harrow, so he will not be lost to the game.'.…

The third of these letters in particular gives a good indication of his Yorkshire bluntness (his entry in the Oxford DNB describes him as 'a man of arrogance and bile, [.] capable of generosity, strong friendships, and kindness towards people in need of help'). The three items are in good condition, lightly aged; the third with slight wear along one edge. All three are signed 'E B Denison' and the second and third are addressed to 'My dear Plumptre'. ONE (14 January 1856): 3pp, 4to. This letter concerns Queen's College, the girls' school founded in 1848 by Denison's relation Frederick Denison Maurice, of which Plumptre would be Head, 1875-1879. Subscribed 'Chairman of the meeting of the Council this day', and addressed 'To the Chairman of the Committee of Education'. Begins: 'Mr Nicolay is anxious that the Committee of Education should be informed of the opinion of the Council respecting the taking of Boarders in the new house (No 68 Harley St.)'. He reports the resolutions of the council, who 'think that the matter is now so far advanced that we may ask the Committee to come to a decision on the subject of taking boarders [.] We beg also to suggest that it is desirable that the meeting or meetings on this subject should be attended by as many of the Professors as possible, as it is a matter seriously affecting their pecuniary interests'. TWO ('Valentines day', 1870): 2pp, 16mo. 'By this time you have possibly got my letter of yesterday, which I took to the College expecting to see you & not observing that it was dated on Monday.' After a brief discussion of College business he gives this in a postscript: 'Crassweller came this morning wanted us to guarantee him in an action which a livery stable man is bringing against him for what he calls a nuisance in carrying off the rubbish through the Mews, which Spooner referred to in his letter to you. Of course I did no such thing. It may, or may not, turn out that we shall have to do nothing, but Crassweller will settle very differently for himself & [yours?].' THREE (3 April 1870): 2pp, 12mo. 'Spooner's account' of Crassweller is 'not very satisfactory', but he has signed the cheque to him. 'I have told Bailey that his continued employment is a disgrace to the Portland Estate, after all that Bailey knows of him - & the Duke [i.e. the Duke of Portland, extensive London landowner] too - By allmeans [sic] try the Duke again if you think it will do any good. I have a strong persuasion that (in spite of Spooner) we ought to have tried to get the building condemned by the M. Board & made it a landlord's job'. He continues: 'I have never heard of a 60 year marriage continuans before my father & mother's. I shall not be in London on Wednesday for more than sleeping at any rate, especially as our kitchen boiler is bust.' Postscript refers to 'Bickley liberality towards Q. C.' and Lady Stanley. …
