Sie rekonstruiert die Geburt von Burckhardts ästhetischer Urteilsbildung aus dem Geiste seiner Italienerfahrung und zeigt zugleich die klassizistischen Wurzeln dieses Kunsturteils auf. Die konservativen Züge der Burckhardtschen Kunstauffassung machen den »Cicerone« zu einem Thesaurus des Bewahrenswerten in einer Zeit politischer und ästhetischer Umbrüche. Er erbingt eine klassifikatorische Syntheseleistung, die den gesamten italienischen Formenbestand einer fast museal zu nennenden Neuordnung unterwirft. Die sogenannte 'Kunst nach Aufgaben' wird hierbei von Burckhardt als polemischer Begriff gegen den modernen Künstler und seine potentiell überschießende Einbildungskraft eingesetzt. Die Tradition dieses modernen Künstlertypus reicht für ihn bis in die Renaissance zu ihrem Urvater Michelangelo zurück und findet ihren Höhepunkt in seiner eigenen Gegenwart.
