Paperback. Etat : Good. Magnus is a deeply moving and enigmatic novel about the Holocaust. It has been Sylvie Germain's most commercially successful novel in France. Magnus is a man searching for his own identity, who pieces together the complex puzzle of his life, which turns out to be closer to a painting by Edward Munch than the romantic tale of family heroism and self-sacrifice on which he was nurtured by the woman he believed was his mother. In Magnus, Sylvie Germain uses imagination and intuition to unlock the enigma of human life and confer on history the power of myth and fable. Magnus won the Goncourt Lyceen Prize, selected by French High School Students as the best novel of the year from the main Goncourt Prize Shortlist. It is a short and profound novel suitable for 16-year-olds upwards and is a good starting point for exploration of the Holocaust.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. 'Robert Irwin vividly and brilliantly blends the fictional life and all-too-real times of a film star of the Nazi era in this a narrative of diminishing options and the advance to death and destruction. Cultured, clever and funny at times, in a grim Charles Adams way, Robert Irwin's novel is engrossing and enveloping. From a dull Dutch childhood in Dordrecht and a waitressing job, sexy Sonja Heda, cigarette in hand, wangles her way on to the film sets of various independent production companies making the films of the Weimar and Nazi eras. From The Blue Angel, The Gypsy Baron, Jew Suss, Habanera and Munchausen she lands the starring role in the Nazi screwball comedy Bagdad Capers. Although German cinema became a key part of the Nazi war effort, the film industry continued to produce commercial films appealing to the varying film tastes of German filmgoers. Joseph Goebbels at the head of the Ministry of Propaganda propagated Nazi supremacist ideology and indoctrinate the population of Germany though film and radio, not unlike the way reality TV and social media are used today by populist politicians in the US and UK.' Paperback. Etat : Good. One day Memento Mori realises that he is a character in a book who has the power to travel from one book to another. He decides to strike against evil writers who sentence their characters to death. He persuades Romeo and Juliet that suicide is not the best solution and that when they are adults they will remember these days with laughter. To save many others from an untimely death he travels to the Reichenbach Falls to push Professor Moriarty to his death. Memento Mori's efforts to save more characters from their authors is interrupted when he learns that his author plans to kill off a character. He has no information about who the intended victim is, so with the help of H. G. Wells' time-machine he takes all the characters to a different dimension where they have a better chance of survival.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Two friends are kidnapped by several masked men, who, to judge by their manners and their accent are men of the best society. One of the friends is a doctor, and the masked men say that they need him to assist a noblewoman, who is about to give birth. When they reach the house, they find no such noblewoman, only a dead man. Another man, known only as A.M.C., bursts in at this point and declares that the man died of opium poisoning. The doctor writes a letter to a newspaper editor, setting out the facts as he knows them. These facts are rebutted first by a friend of A.M.C. and then by the first masked man, who explains the whole story. E a de Queiroz wrote this spoof 'mystery' with his friend Ramalho Ortig o, publishing it in the form of a series of anonymous letters in the Di rio de Not -cias between 24 July and 27 September 1870. Many readers believed the letters to be genuine. As the book progresses, one sees E a gradually getting into his stride as a novelist, equally at home with humour and with human drama. Recently turned into a major Portuguese feature film it will delight avid E a fans and lovers of mysteries.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. The Tower at the Edge of the World is William Heinesen's last novel written when he was 76, and is the summation of all of his work. He is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Nordic author of the twentieth century. William Heinesen describes The Tower at the Edge of the World as a poetic mosaic novel about earliest childhood. There is the perspective of both the child and the old man looking back at his life as a child. Although there is a lot of tangible detail and recognisable characters the book has a mythic quality. The events in a small community in the windswept Atlantic ocean being recorded by the writer in his room, his tower at the edge of the world, have a larger than life feel. Torshavn and his childhood are used to tell the history of the world and of creation.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Abbe Jules, first published in 1888, is the second part of Octave Mirbeau's autobiographical trilogy and tells the story of a priest's lifelong struggle with his passions. Narrated from the viewpoint of a small boy, it depicts the stifling atmosphere of petit bourgeois, provincial France, where family, education and religion conspire to produce individuals tortured by repressed desire, violent fantasies and forbidden lusts. Innocence is corrupted, pity and pain are inextricably linked in a novel which shows the influence of Naturalism, in its brutally realistic descriptions which echo Zola and Flaubert, side by side with passages of extraordinary lyricism and sensuality, as Mirbeau exercises the impressionist skills of Monet, Pisaro and Van Gogh. …

Paperback. Etat : Good. Calvary (Le Calvaire) is a 1886 novel by the French journalist, playwright, and novelist Octave Mirbeau. Heavily drawing from his own life, Mirbeau's Calvary is a romanticised retelling of his fateful affair with a woman of questionable morals named Judith Vinmer - Juliette Roux in the novel. Octave Mirbeau (1848 - 1917) was a French playwright, travel writer, journalist, pamphleteer, art critic, and novelist whose work has been translated into thirty languages. Mirbeau became famous in Europe and enjoyed immense popularity, while simultaneously remaining appealing to the literary and artistic avant-garde. Other notable works by this author include: S bastien Roch (1890), Dans le ciel (1893-1989), and Le Jardin des supplices (1899). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on the history of erotic literature.…
