This copy shows water-staining to the the lower margins of the cloth on the front and back covers, with some visible damp-staining to the lower margins of the front & back paste-downs, title-page, final page of text, but not visibly affecting the color surface of the double-page print. Hardback book, one of 230 copies. This is a designer binding by Patrick Fox using one of the 19 sets of loose sheets (this #213) sold for the purposes of bespoke binding. Sheets printed on 170gsm Magnani paper; Fournier typeface; colophon signed by both Andrew Motion and Simon Brett. Binding spec: bound in blue/white striped African cloth, leather titles pasted on front and spine, Fabriano Roma endpapers, and contained in a plain blue cloth-covered slipcase. As new.…

Gurney's poems capture the essence of early 20th century London, and the black and white photographs that accompany the poems reflect the past, and in particular the changing moods of the capital city at that time.This is a designer bookbinding and the bookbinder, Stephen Conway, gained inspiration from both the poems and the way they were presented in the book. Quarter-leather binding with leather fore-edge strip, painted edges. Leather-jointed paste-paper doublures. Vellum panels with images and lettering underneath, present the title, 'London', across the front and rear boards. The overall effect is a counterpoint to the black and white images in the book. Red leather strips separate each panel and frame them within the fore edges of the book. Signed and dated by Conway 2011, the book is contained in an attractive suede lined half-leather solander box: red leather, with red/white veined marbled papers, embossed title on box spine. Stephen Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. A beautiful book.
