A statute of limitation is an act of limiting the time within which an action must be brought. To further elaborate, we can say that for most actions, periods of limitation are prescribed by statutes, with the consequence that an action commenced after the period of limitation has expired is not maintainable. In short, statutes that impose periods of limitation for classes of actions are called statutes of limitation. In fact, the concept of limitation and lapse of time remained vogue in the legal framework throughout the history of the origin and development of the Islamic legal system. It is the earliest, best-known representative, and extant work of this genre. In the introduction to his Asbab al-Nuzul, Al-Wahidi, who was hailed as the greatest Qur'anic commentator of his time, wrote, "We have ended up benefiting the beginners in the sciences of the Book by expounding the occasions for which it was revealed. It is not possible to know the interpretation of a given verse or the meaning it alludes to without knowing its story and the occasion of its revelation." This title is not only the work that has insured Al-Wahidi a prominent place in the field of Qur'anic study, but it is also the standard upon which all subsequent works on the occasions of the revelation were modeled. **About The Author** Abul Hasan Ali Al-Wahidi son of Ahmad Bin Muhammad, was born in 398 Hijri, in Nisabpur, was a great scholar of Shafi'i school of thought, a renowned classical scholar with great knowledge of Tafsir of Quran. Abu'l-Hasan `Ali Ibn Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn `Ali Ibn Mattuyah al-Wahidi al-Mattuwi, the author of the celebrated commentaries (on the Qur'an), was the first master of his time in the sciences of grammar and Qur'anic exegesis. The divine grace which attended him is manifest in his works; they were universally considered as excellent and were frequently cited by professors in their lessons. Three of them, the Basit (In extenso), the Wasit (medium), and the Wajiz (compendium), are on the interpretation of the Qur'an, and their titles have been adopted by Abu Hamid al-Ghazzali for three of his own works. He composed also a treatise on the motives for which the different portions of the Qur'an were revealed; a work called the Takhbir (Indication), containing an explanation of the (ninety-nine) excellent names given to God; a full commentary on the poems of al-Mutanabbi, surpassing in excellence all the numerous works on the same subject, and containing many curious observations. Al-Wahidi was a pupil of al-Tha`labi, the author of celebrated commentary of the Qur'an. he learned from him the science of Qur`anic interpretation, and ended by surpassing him. He died of a lingering disease in AH 468 (A.C. 1076), at Naysapur.
