Only in recent years has the psychology of thinking which momentarily held the stage in the first decade of this century revived as a serious and active interest for a considerable number of psychologists. Elsewhere (Hearnshaw 1954) the author have suggested that there were a number of reasons for this trend and that contemporary work in psychopathology child psychology and the experimental investigation of learning and perception together with various developments in physiology biology and philosophy were all converging in a way that almost forced psychologists to reconsider the whole question of thinking. He has chosen this topic because there is among psychologists and others a growing sense of its importance a growing sense that however complex and difficult and indeed must be investigated if progress in other areas of psychology is not to be held up. The author's aim is to present a sort of interim report on some of the more recent work and speculations of psychologists in the field of normal psychology and tentatively to pick out certain trends which may possibly be significant. The basic contention of the psychologist is simply this Thinking is the activity of an organism and does not occur in vacuo. It is indeed an extremely high level activity in the sense that it depends upon the organized co ordination of a vast number of subordinate activities. This high level activity is rendered possible only as the result of a long period of evolutionary and individual development and it depends on the co operation of favourable organic and environmental conditions. The two major aims of the psychologist are therefore first to study in detail the development of thinking and if we may regard abstract logical or mathematical thinking and artistic creation as the two most highly evolved types of thinking to reveal the genetic foundations upon which these types of thinking rest. 260 pp.…

Biodiversity conservation in tropical agroecosystems. 11. Intensification food production and the conservation of biodiversity. 12. Air pollution and biodiversity a review. Bibliography. Index. Despite much recent attention biodiversity conservation and protected area management remain in large part subservient issues in the world today they need to continuously adapt themselves to larger issues of the global political economy to remain politically acceptable. Based on this assumption we argue that it is possible to identify three major trends in conservation and protected area management that are likely to influence policy and practice for a long time to come. Although the influence of these large scale global political and economic trends on biodiversity conservation and protected area management is not a new phenomenon participants in the conservation debate tend to loose sight of this bigger picture. By calling attention to these trends we aim to enhance the understanding and appreciation of macro social economic and political dynamics both constraints and opportunities that impinge on conservation and development. Such an understanding could in turn enhance the success of initiatives that aim to improve conservation of biodiversity and protected areas management. Studies on plants have been particularly revealing and support results from recent theoretical models which predict that decreasing plant diversity leads to lower plant productivity. These models predict that diversity and composition are approximately equal in importance as determinants of ecosystem functioning. Two mechanisms have been identified to explain why levels of ecosystem functioning increase with increasing biodiversity. First is the sampling effect. When the pool of species available in a region contains individual species that vary in productivity and other contributions to ecosystem functioning then species rich ecosystems have a higher probability of containing species with high levels of functioning. Second is the complementarity effect. This occurs when increasing diversity results in increasing numbers of species that are complementary rather than competitive in their use of resources exploiting different niches such as rooting depths and allowing more effective use of available resources. 264 pp.…

Media and communications companies are part of the mainstream international commercial business community. This past decade has seen the issues of corporate social responsibility move increasingly rapidly from the fringe of management practice of a few pioneers some of them in your industries to a major issue for the boardroom agenda. In the process it has attracted increasing attention and widespread public interest and is now seen by many institutions from the United Nations World Bank European Union and OECD down as a key part of the solution to pressing governance and development challenges. The media has played key roles in exposing bad ethical practice scandals vested interests and double standards whether in business or in personalities. But the media often faces criticisms of putting events personalities entertainment gossip and sensationalism. The author guess what makes the news ahead of the need to explain context take a more analytical view and look at issues in the longer term way that solutions to complex issues and progress require. The study of Media Communications involves diverse areas of inquiry including the organisation of the media industry and associated professional practices media texts genres and representations audiences and processes of media reception and of course media impact. Media researchers must therefore make use of a wide range of methods of analysis often in combination and they must also consider their various strengths and possible limitations. To help you to get to grips with these methods of media analysis we consider selected studies that make use of various methods and also invite you to try out selected methods in your own applied studies. 264 pp.…

The human poverty index is constructed by taking a composite of variables that reflect the economic educational and health aspects of human development (see table). From that Bihar ranks very high in the poverty index followed by Orissa Arunachal Pradesh Meghalaya Assam Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. On the other hand some of the relatively affluent states are Kerala and Himachal Pradesh. The northeastern states of Meghalaya and Nagaland exhibit a fairly high level of poverty while Mizoram falls somewhere in between. Yet the literacy rate among tribal women is highest in the state of Mizoram and the literacy rates among tribal women in Meghalaya and Nagaland are comparable to those of Kerala and Himachal Pradesh. 248 pp.…

The 1991 census estimates that the Dalit population in India totals approximately 138 million people (India Ministry of home affairs registrar general and census commissioner 1993). Dalit are kept socially and physically separate from caste member in a number of ways. Occupation and physical appearance often differentiates the Dalit from member of the caste system 4. In addition the Dalit population is commonly clustered together in segregated hamlets at the edge of a village. They are usually a small and assailable minority in any given region. This position of vulnerability makes resistance to exploitation and violence difficult. The befouled status of the lower castes has encumbered the Dalit population with year of subjugation and such conduct has resulted in widespread intolerance of the untouchables. 264 pp.…

The Art and Practice of Journal is the basic characteristic of the communist press is that it is devoted to the mass indoctrination of the population. This indoctrination is called education. To an extent it is the dissemination of knowledge and techniques but more often the instruction is not education but communistic indoctrination carried on in a steady ordered and repetitive fashion on a gigantic all inclusive scale. When an editor indicates the real significance of an event he is performing for the readers the valuable service of interpretation. Through his special knowledge acquired from research and advice of experts it is possible for the editor to point out the vital and perhaps hidden significance of what has been reported in the day's news. He views the events with his particular readers in mind and interprets the affairs of the world as to how they would affect the people in his own area. Too many isolated items bearing on the same subject may bring the thread of interpretation which correlates and binds them and thus discloses their real meaning. Though the editorials newspapers are able to indicate to other editors how their own communities are thinking and acting in important situations. In this sense the newspaper is crystallizing public opinion and extending its influence rather than shaping public opinion. Through this reflection of public opinion statesmen and other leaders become informed as to the wishes of the public they represent and are better able to follow the dictates of their constituents. Among the instrumentalities of communication the newspaper generally excels because of its technical facilities its trained personnel and its immense public. Compared with other techniques for the communication of facts ideas and arguments the press possesses a mechanism which makes it the most powerful force in public affairs. Its technical equipment includes news and opinion gathering stations manned by thousands of trained men throughout the world telegraph and wireless equipment that encircles every continent devices for instantaneous transmission of news pictures and high speed machinery for manufacturing newspapers. Reporters and correspondents are stationed wherever government operates. They report the facts which the people in a democracy must have. American newsmen are located in every large city on the globe. 298 pp.…

English literature in early period seems always the sign of a genuine literary revival and yet song lives on whether the professing masters of literature write lyrics or not. Ballads and popular songs gave voice to the fevor of individual feeling before the renaissance and after it when the age had given place to satire and didacticism. Yet thee is no doubt that lyric poets were more numerous during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries than they had been before or have ever been since. Genuine lyrical poetry already existent came into literary fashion with the renaissance. John Skelton although eccentric and usually inharmonious was not without lyrical ability. King Henry VIII wrote a few very good lyrics such as Green growth the holly and his contemporaries William Cornish and John Hey Wood had already learned the art of song writing. Yet the book has been significant and deeply satisfying to many readers. Human beings have always had to struggle with the hard facts of the surroundings in which they live moreover they have usually had to continue the struggle from generations to generation so that no one in a single lifetime could claim the satisfaction of victory but only of continuance and survival. In the middle ages and in earlier mythologizing times men transfigured the repetitive tedium of the struggle by dramatizing the sequence of reviving and subsiding life in the revolutions of the seasons. A change came about when colonizing began such as that of the Puritan settlers during the 17th century on the Eastern American seaboard for the colonists were able to see the transformation of wilderness into cultivated land in the space of a lifetime labour then took on the shape of heroic enterprise. Defoe by showing how Crusoe constructed for himself a habitable and even prosperous settlement by his unaided effort and ingenuity achieved a kind of prose epic of the humdrum and his book became permanent inspiration to sober patient and practical men such as his fellow dissenters of the 18th century. 332 pp.…

Numerous discrepancies in language and culture added to the difficulties of the day. Here we will explore this phenomenal period in history. The Anglo Saxon period of English ended in the 11th century with the Norman conquest of England. England became tri lingual. Norman French was spoken by the aristocracy Latin was spoken in the church and the people spoke a confusion of Anglo Saxon dialects. The ascendancy of Anglo Norman (the form of old French spoken and written by the Normans who lived in England) over Anglo Saxon interrupted the normal literary development and forced English prose and poetry into the background during the 12th 13th and 14th centuries. French culture and thought were introduced in England and a considerable number of French words enriched the English language. It was not until the middle of the 14th century that English and specifically the East Midland Anglo Saxon dialect of London from which modern English is derived became the dominant language in the country. This was the language in which Chaucer the first great English poet wrote his famous work The Canterbury Tales. Another outstanding work of this influential poet is the poem Troilus and Criseyde considered by some to be his greatest artistic achievement. The period between 1350 and 1400 the year of Chaucer's death was marked by an important revival of alliterative poetry. The finest examples of this type are Pearl Purity (or cleanliness) and Patience all believed to have been written by the same unknown poet. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight which was written during this period of time is considered to be one of the best Arthurian romances in English. The Vision Concerning Piers Plowman attributed to William Langland is generally considered second only to The Canterbury Tales as the greatest poem of the middle English period. The best known English prose writer at the end of the 14th century was John Wycliffe who initiated the first complete English translation of the Bible. 384 pp. …
