They are listed as first editions probably/possibly because there are no additional printings (NAP). However, with E. P. Dutton first editions are indicated up to 1928 by the same date on both the title page and copyright page (SD). My copy has… 1913 on the title page but no date on the copyright page. You can see the covers in the photos. They look pretty clean. The spine is sun toned to a goldish color. The gilt lettering is still fairly bright on the spine. There is some wear at the spine ends (second photo), several small tears. The cover edges look pretty good. There is one small spot of rub-through at the rear top edge, a tiny one at the front bottom edge just adjacent to the bottom edge of the spine. The corners have small spots of superficial rubbing, the rear bottom one as very small spot of rub-through. The top page edges gilt. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. The edges are actually pretty smooth. The length of the pages (at the bottom) does vary, some are cut shorter than others, not uncommon. The book is square and the spine is straight. The pages are nicely tight at their junctures, no issues at any of them. At the juncture between the front inside cover and the blank front end paper you can see that there were tears and the paper was glued back into place. At the juncture between the rear cover and rear end paper there is paper loss and the webbing there is exposed. However, both covers are solidly bound, not loose. The pages appear to be exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. A couple of early pages have a teeny tiny crease below the tip of their top corners. Otherwise, I didn't find much by way of creasing. I'm not seeing any placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. There is one attachment, a bookplate of a James Baker on the front inside cover. It's an interesting bookplate in very good condition. Mr. Baker signed his name in small letters just off the top edge of the front inside cover. On the facing blank end paper, off the top edge, in small letters, the word 'scarce' and the words 'out of print' are penciled. There is no writing to be found anywhere else in the book.

Undated, but we believe this is likely to be the first impression of the 2nd edition from 1905, following the Lawrence and Bullen 1898 first edition, due to red and black cover printing and lightly embossed cover design (?). A very good green cloth hardback with black and red printed and embossed cover with gilt title to spine. With light wear and bumping. Soundly bound, with endpapers at inner hinges just starting to crack. Some offsetting to endpapers. Text is bright and clear throughout, with gilt top edge. Well illustrated with line illustrations, full page black and white plates, including one fold-out of fishing hook Limerick scale, and four colour plates of fishing flies. Occasional cracking at gutters, and on a few spreads pages have some edge damage to the vertical edge, when facing pages have had to be manually separated. An attractively presented book.
