The "Hidden Wisdom" is found in the parable, the metaphor, the analogy, the allegory, and Hodson does a masterful job of digging under the surface and presenting the true meanings hidden away by the ancient writers, who obviously knew more than they are given credit for. An important study for those who seek to know more and who are not satisfied with the literal interpretation of the Bible materials. EB; 9.4 X 6.1 X 1.1 inches.

"Living Artfully is a beautifully illustrated account of the life and workings of the three main estates of Marjorie Merriweather Post as seen through the eyes of the staff that worked there. Full of evocative images it is designed in the form of a year-long calendar, the properties being used at different times and seasons - Hillwood in Washington, DC in the spring and fall, Camp Topridge in the Adirondacks of New York during the summer; and Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach in the winter. Mrs Post was one of America's most stylish and powerful women during the 1950s and 60s, a director of Post Cereals, philanthropist, patriot, and internationalist as well as a passionate art collector. This new volume reveals the inner workings of her estates, through photographs, period journals and ephemera from the archives, and fascinating glimpses provided by the staff, including an interview with 91 year-old former Head Gardener Earle. The reissue of this 1969 translation of a Spanish tour-de-force should captivate those who prize the elegant lyricism and complexity of Latin American fiction. Eschewing political dogma, Goytisolo's ( Forbidden Territory ) BIP theme--explored in styles ranging from stream-of-consciousness to those imitative of bureaucratic memoranda--is exile and expatriation. The hero returns from Paris to Goytisolo's native Barcelona after ten years' absence, confronting the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and his ruptured relationship to Catholicism and machismo culture. Patience is required to navigate Goytisolo's often serpentine sentences, many of which consume several pages. But the prose, presented here in a luxuriant translation, attains hypnotic, incantatory powers. Its density is remarkably evocative: referring to one servant, for example, the narrator notes that she was "less self-abnegating, however, his Aunt Mercedes would remind them, than that other legendary maid who after an existence of privation . . . Left the entire amount of her savings to that scornful grandfather of his who had exploited her during her lifetime." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Original embossed brown pictorial stiff-stock paper wrappers printed in blue, green, red, yellow and gold. Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks.… Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. A well-illustrated promotional for these Southern California counties. The Commission was composed of one member from each of the counties named in the title and were to prepare, promote, install and maintain the appropriate exhibits at the Panama California Exposition held in San Diego in 1915, and their counterparts at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco the same year. The author of most of the accompanying text was John Steven McGroarty, well-known author best known, perhaps, for his massive five volume history, California of the South (1935). Each of the listed counties is well-promoted with excellent text on the wonderful agricultural possibilities, the high schools, water, mineral wealth, descriptions of the cities, and, of course, an abundance of statistics on the county, its dairy, livestock, and poultry, climate, etc. As well, the important civic buildings, agricultural land, streets, residences, and more is well represented with photographic images. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Taking the reader on a fast-moving journey from Billie Holiday's rough-and-tumble Baltimore childhood (where she ran errands at a whorehouse in exchange for the chance to listen to Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith albums) , to her emergence on Harlem's club scene, to sold-out performances with the Count Basie Orchestra and with Artie Shaw and his band, this revelatory memoir is notable for its trenchant observations on the racism that darkened Billie's life and the heroin addiction that ended it too soon. We are with her during the mesmerizing debut of "Strange Fruit"; with her as she rubs shoulders with the biggest movie stars and musicians of the day (Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and more) ; and with her through the scrapes with Jim Crow, spats with Sarah Vaughan, ignominious jailings, and tragic decline. All of this is told in Holiday's tart, streetwise style and hip patois that makes it read as if it were written yesterday. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 250 pages.

The son of a merchant, Noyes got his start in journalism with , where he reluctantly became the paper's Wall Street correspondent in 1884 when the banking house Grant and Moore failed and he happened to be the only reporter in the office not on assignment. . Forty Years of American Finance The War Period in American Finance oyes warns against the belief on Wall Street that America had entered a New Era that (adv 88). Always critical of unchecked speculation and current trends, Noyes consistently emphasized his belief that clues to the contemporary marketplace are revealed by a historical knowledge of finance: The Speculative Markets, differs so greatly from any in the past that old-fashioned precaution is out of date [The speculative 1901 bull market assumed] that we were living in a New Era; that old rules and principles and precedent of finance were obsolete; that things could safely be done to-day which had been dangerous or impossible in the past. This illusion seized on the public mind in 1901 (in New York at any rate) quite as firmly as it did in 1929. It differed only in the fact that there were no college professors in 1901 who preached the popular illusion as their new political economy. ( 195) The Market Place This style of historical analogy, illustrated above by his comparing the speculation of 1901 and the Depression of 1929, is a staple of Noyes' prose. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

While the supremely popular Steal This Book is a guide to living outside the establishment, Revolution for the Hell of It is a chronicle of Abbie Hoffman's radical escapades that doubles as a guidebook for today's social and political activist. Hoffman pioneered the use of humor, theater, and shock value to drive home his points, and in Revolution for the Hell of It he gives firsthand accounts of his legendary adventures, from the activism that led to the founding of the Youth International Partyor "Yippies! to the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests ("a Perfect Mess") that resulted in his conviction as part of the Chicago Seven. Also chronicled are the mass demonstrations he led in which over fifty thousand people attempted to levitate the Pentagon using psychic energy, and the time he threw fistfuls of dollar bills onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and watched the traders scramble. Claude Adrien Helvétius (26 January 1715 26 December 1771) was a French philosopher, freemason and littérateur. Helvétius' philosophical studies ended in the production of his famous book De l'esprit (On Mind). It was first published in 1758 and was intended to be the rival of Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws, with Helvétius arguing strongly against Montesquieu's theory that climate influenced the character of nations. The work attracted immediate attention and aroused the most formidable opposition, especially from the dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV. The Advocate General Joly de Fleury condemned it in the Parlement of Paris in January 1759. The Sorbonne condemned the book, while the priests persuaded the court that it was full of the most dangerous doctrines. The book was declared to be heretical so atheistic that it was condemned by Church and State and was burned. Helvétius, terrified at the storm he had raised, wrote three separate and humiliating retractions. In spite of his protestations of orthodoxy, the book was publicly burned by the Paris hangman.
