Two raids took place, and the following day American Flying Fortresses pressed home the attack. Thousands of tons of bombs reduced the once beautiful city to rubble and turned it into a blast furnace. At least 35,000 people lost their lives, including thousands of refugees, hospital patients, and prisoners of war. There has been much controversy about the Dresden bombing, about the purpose of the attack and its dreadful consequences in terms of human life and of the wholesale destruction of the artistic glories of one of Europe's great cities. Many questions still remain unanswered. To throw further light on the whole affair, Alexander McKee has chosen to examine the story primarily from a personal point of view. His book is based in large part on the eyewitness accounts given him by Dresden residents who survived the attack and by Allied airmen who flew in the raids. The result is a gripping account of what it was like to be in the flaming streets and smoke~filled cellars of Dresden and in the cockpits and gun turrets of the warplanes overhead. The reader actually feels the massive air attack in all its drama and terror. Alexander McKee has also delved into official records, some only recently declassified, to examine the political aspects of the raid and to explore the trend in World War II away from selective bombing of strictly military targets~of which Dresden offered virtually none~to the terror~bombing of entire populations.
