Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Early work from Lee Friedlander capturing a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement On May 17, 1957, through the generosity of Bayard Rustin, Lee Friedlander was given full access to photograph the participants of the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington, D.C. This extraordinary event, organized by Mr. Rustin, as well as A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., brought together many of the great thinkers and leaders of the period, and was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Friedlander's photographs depict the famous individuals at the event?Mahalia Jackson, Ruby Dee and Harry Belafonte, among many other luminaries of the African-American community?but they also pay particular attention to the 25,000 men, women and children who gathered to give voice and energy to the ideas embattled by the movement. The 58 previously unpublished photographs gathered here are among Friedlander's earliest work. Also included in this publication is the typescript of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Give Us the Ballot" speech and additional ephemera from the march produced in facsimile. …

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 1st Edition. FIGHTING MEN OF TEXAS: TEXAS HISTORY TALES IN BLANK VERSE, Mary Lou Burkett, illustrations by Joan Hilbig, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated first edition, 1986. BOOK CONDITION: fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no dogears, tears, or marks. There is no book plate nor signature of prior owner. Not a remainder or library book. The red simulated leather boards are in fine condition. The dust jacket is in good condition (rippling on front cover). 9 x 6 ¼, 159 pages, 16 ounces XX [from the dust jacket] This epic poem in blank verse celebrates the fighting men of Texas from the days of the Texas Revolution to the present. The author researched letters, journals, and other primary sources to assure fidelity to historic events. FIGHTING MEN OF TEXAS, her major book-length poetry, crowns a lifetime of writing about Texas in both prose and poetry and composing musicals to help celebrate her native state. Much of the author's poetry was written and published during her younger years. Her more recent efforts have been other literary forms, principally three full-length musicals for which she wrote the book, music, and the lyrics. Her first musical was produced in Corpus Christi in 1976. Her most recent musical, Big Hill: The Saga of Spindletop, was performed in 1986. A full-length stage play about Ima Hogg, the daughter of Texas Governor James Hogg, is her latest work in progress. A native of Waxahachie, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. C. Cooke. In her earlier years, Mrs. Burkett won poetry prizes and was published in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. She was a member of the Poetry Society of Texas and attended Dallas meetings while a student at Trinity University. One of her plays was produced by Trinity Players. In 1937, she married Jacob C. Burkett, Jr. They moved from Breckenridge to Goose Creek, now Baytown, in 1943. Together, they taught for many years at Robert E. Lee High School, where Mr. Burkett headed instrumental music. He died in 1962. Mrs. Burkett took early retirement following the death of her mother in 1968. In addition to her regular classes, she had sponsored a writing club without salary. Her students won many awards, and several are successful writers today. Of her various poems, only one eighty-page story in verse has been published in book form. FOR ALL THAT IS AMERICA, concerning Pearl Harbor, was published in Dallas and given the Gold Medal Award of the Texas Woman's Press Association in 1945. XX Mary Lou Burkett's FIGHTING MEN OF TEXAS will appeal to lovers of both poetry and Texas history. Working in the classic tradition of the epic and more recently in the vein of Stephen Vincent Benet's John Brown's Body, Ms. Burkett has written her epic poem of Texas celebrating those who carved Texas out of the wilderness and brought her to the present. Fighting Men of Texas is a work fitting for Texas's Sesquicentennial. (FRANK VANDIVER, President, Texas A&M University). Hilbig, Joan (illustrateur).…
