From the introduction: "This bibliography is the first attempt to compile information on American theatrical periodicals published from the time of the first such magazine, in 1798, to 1967. Altogether the bibliography lists some 685 periodicals published in 122 cities and 31 states, with locations of issues noted in 137 libraries in the United States and Canada and in the British Museum. As well as identifying the periodicals, the book attempts to indicate the location of the periodicals in specific libraries and the actual holdings in each library. For the eighty-five periodicals which could not be found in any library, the source is given for the belief that such a magazine was actually published.Arrangement of the bibliography is chronological by year of first publication and, within each year, alphabetical by title. As far as possible, each entry includes the original title, editor, place of publication, publisher and address, dates of the first and last issues, subsequent changes in title, frequency of publication, any necessary miscellaneous notes, and symbols for libraries where the periodical can be found."
