Creation of the Universe traces the development of the Big Bang theory, from the expansion of the universe to quantum cosmology, from the formation of large scale structure to the physics of the Planck era. Fang Li Zhi, a leading Chinese astrophysicist and Li Shu Xian (co-author and wife) trace the advances in cosmology and recount experiences made by scientists - their frustrations and hardships, hopes and joys - in an easily comprehensible and often humorous manner. Complex topics are elucidated with anecdotes from Eastern and Western philosophy.

This includes the use of a universal method for treating free field theories, which allows the derivation of a single, simple, free, local, Poincare-invariant, gauge-invariant action that can be applied directly to any fields.

Using a lively, non-technical style and images from everyday life, the authors present the basic principles behind computing and computers. The focus is on those aspects of computation that concern networks of numerous small computational units, whether biological neural networks or artificial electronic devices. Paperback. .". is a worthwhile elementary treatment of the cosmology of the early Universe written with a liveliness and simplicity that will surely encourage students to pursue the subject further.'' John D Barrow Nature, 1989 .". a superb guide to what is known about cosmology. The authors also leave you with a sense of anticipation and excitement.'' David Hughes New Scientist, 1989 "The book is well written and interesting, particularly in its use of Chinese stories throughout . The book contains all the standard material found in such texts. The chapters on the thermodynamics of the Universe are particularly good . this is a first-rate book of its genre and is heartily recommended." Kenneth Dunn Mathematical Reviews, 1993 "The best popular account of the science that explains how the universe can be friendly to life is a book, 'Creation of the Universe', by the Chinese astronomers, Fang Li Zhi and Li Shu Xian. The book was translated into English and published byWorld Scientific Publishing in 1989. Fang Li Zhi is the famous dissident astronomer now living in exile in the United States. I particularly recommend Chapter 6, with the title 'How Order Was Born of Chaos'. This tells the same story that I am telling you today, but with more detail and more depth." These notes are the contents of a lecture course given to third year physics undergraduates at the Imperial College who are taking the theoretical physics option. The subject of "Algebra and Groups" is of considerable importance in a number of branches of modern theoretical physics, and therefore one major objective of the course is to introduce the students to the basic ideas on the subject, bearing in mind the potential applications to quantum theory. However, another equally important aim of the course is to introduce the student to the art of genuine "mathematical" thinking. The notes are therefore written in a more precise mathematical style than is usually the case in courses aimed at physics students. Quite apart from the general educational value of such an exposure to abstract thinking, it is also the case that much modern theoretical physics draws on sophisticated ideas from pure mathematics and therefore it is most important that a perspective graduate student can approach these subjects without experiencing a total culture shock! The course is divided into three parts. The first is a short introduction to general group theory, with particular emphasis being placed on the matrix Lie groups that play such a crucial role in modern theoretical physics. The second part deals with the theory of vector spaces, with particular attention being paid to the theory of Hilbert spaces and the basic analytical techniques that are needed to handle the infinite dimensional situation. The final part of the course is a short introduction to the theory of group representations and the associated theory of characters.

It attempts to single out the basic algebraic facts and techniques of the theory. The book is organized in two chapters. The first chapter deals with the intimate relation of cyclic theory to ordinary Hochschild theory. The second chapter deals with cyclic homology as a typical characteristic zero theory.

The material collected in this book originated from the author's twenty-five years of teaching for a two-semester, first year graduate course in the University of Michigan. It discusses the physics and analysis of nuclear and electromagnetic interactions. It also introduces the concepts of Quantum Mechanics from the Liouville, rather than the Schroedinger, point of view. This viewpoint is unique, less abstract and lends itself nicely to physical applications. It is highly recommended as a text for graduate courses in Physics, Chemistry and Engineering.

The recent flurry of activity was set off by a paper by Michael Berry, where it was found that the adiabatic evolution of energy eigenfunctions in quantum mechanics contains a phase of geometric origin (now known as 'Berry's phase') in addition to the usual dynamical phase derived from Schrödinger's equation. This observation, though basically elementary, seems to be quite profound. Phases with similar mathematical origins have been identified and found to be important in a startling variety of physical contexts, ranging from nuclear magnetic resonance and low-Reynolds number hydrodynamics to quantum field theory. This volume is a collection of original papers and reprints, with commentary, on the subject.

These lectures focus on the idea of a highest weight representation, which goes through four different incarnations. The first is the canonical commutation relations of the infinite-dimensional Heisenberg Algebra (= oscillator algebra). The second is the highest weight representations of the Lie algebra gl? of infinite matrices, along with their applications to the theory of soliton equations, discovered by Sato and Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara and Miwa. The third is the unitary highest weight representations of the current (= affine Kac-Moody) algebras. These algebras appear in the lectures twice, in the reduction theory of soliton equations (KP ? KdV) and in the Sugawara construction as the main tool in the study of the fourth incarnation of the main idea, the theory of the highest weight representations of the Virasoro algebra. This book should be very useful for both mathematicians and physicists. To mathematicians, it illustrates the interaction of the key ideas of the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras; and to physicists, this theory is turning into an important component of such domains of theoretical physics as soliton theory, theory of two-dimensional statistical models, and string theory.
