Bound in full leather, cover is plain. Hubbed spine bears six raised bands, and a leather burgundy label stamped in gilt lettering. All edges sprinkled red. Attractive antiquaria…n bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. xii, 782pp., plus 2 pages of ads. Covers and spine are moderately rubbed. Two inch crack along front outer joint at the foot, and inner hinges are starting, yet boards are very firmly affixed and the binding is absolutely solid. Previous owner's name neatly penned inside the front cover in contemporary dipped ink. Pages are in stunning condition. Mild discoloration occasionally throughout, but overall, leaves are bright white and clean. No writing within text body. A wonderfully preserved volume of writings and sermons. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "William Fleetwood, (1656-1723), was an English preacher, Bishop of St. Asaph and Bishop of Ely, remembered by economists and statisticians for constructing a price index in his Chronicon Preciosum of 1707. He received his education at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge. Fleetwood was regarded as the best preacher of his time. He was accurate in learning, and effective in delivery, and his character stood deservedly high in general estimation. In episcopal administration he far excelled most of his contemporaries. He was a zealous Hanoverian, and a favourite with Queen Anne in spite of his Whiggism." (Wikipedia). Contemporary binding, embossed panelled leather, scratched and worn, heavily bumped and rubbed to corners. Spine more recent (?18th century) with six raised bands, the title in gilt in the second panel. Sixth panel with light damage from removal of a label. Damp stains to edges of pastedowns. Title page MISSING; the book starts at A1, "The printer to the understanders". Decorated capitals. This is probably the first state of the Poems, as Nn1r omits the headling in order to incorporate 35 lines of verse. Woodcut printer's device to title page of Paradoxes and Problems, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initial letters throughout. Final page with the censor's permission to publish of Henry Herbert, (1594 - 27 April 1673), Master of the Revels to King Charles I. Scarce, even without the title page. This is the first chief collection of Donne's poetry, much of which was either unpublished or circulated privately (often in manuscript) while he lived. After his death in 1631, the publication of his poems did a little to elevate his stature in the English pantheon, although it would be many decades before the fame which his work now enjoys was fully established. "The text of this first edition of Donne's collected Poems does not appear to have been derived from any single source. Grierson and later editors, notably Gardner and Milgate, believe that the original compiler used two sources belonging to the two main groups of surviving manuscripts, but made changes on his own authority and by reference to yet other manuscripts. Corners bumped, cloth mottled with drop marks, an approximately 3/4 inch irregularly shaped chip off spine. Internally, previous owner's 1929 inscriptio…n (from Rev W H Turner) , endpapersand first and last few leaves tanned with some foxing, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Insightful and concise sermons applying the lessons of the Gospels and Epistles to daily life, occasionally interspersed with references to the material temptations and distractions of New York City during the earlier days of the great migration of African-Americans from the rural South and the Harlem Renaissance. Author was a noted figure in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and pastor of Bethel A M E Church in New York City. Son of Rev Edward D Spearman, born in Newberry, South Carolina in 1875, educated at Biddle and Lincoln Universities and Yale, and pastor at churches in Chelsea and Lynn, Massachusetts, Camden, Newark and Trenton, New Jersey, and finally Bethel, and delegate and leader to the General Conferences.
