The first plate and one other are quite browned but generally the plates are in good clean condition. An attractive example of this scarce edition.

Gilt Kent heraldic horse symbol to other compartments.All edges uncut. Folio, 18ins x 11ins, iv, (ii), 396pp, 20pp (indices, additions and corrections), 1pp list of plates plus folding plan of Canterbury and 9pp plates. Also 12 illustrations within the text, making the total of 22 illustrations as listed. There is also an illustration of the South Prospect of the Cathedral (p110) which is not listed. The plates are slightly smaller than the bound volume (16ins x 9.25ins) suggesting that this is probably a large paper copy. Map has an old tape repair to verso. Occasional offsetting to text page opposite illustrations, but generally a VG clean copy. Previous owners bookplate to front free endpaper. Scarce in it's original format.

Printed for L.Davis, C. Reymers and B. White, London, 1766, reprint (first edition 1725). Full leather binding comprising original boards (restored) with a later replacement spine. Horizontal gilt lines to spine. Gilt lettering on red leather patch to spine. Folio, 16ins x 10.25ins, vi, 148pp plus 2 plans of sluices and 5 maps (4 folding). This volume was extensively restored in 1984 (binders notes included). The title page, first 4 pages (preface & contents) and the plan of Denver sluice have been encased in bookbinders lens tissue on both sides. The second sluice plate and the first map have been covered on one side. The whole volume was resewn, fitted with new endpapers and preserved in a purpose made slipcase. Nb please note the spine label reads "Armstrong, Navigation, 1766". A VG well preserved copy.

Five raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to compartments two and four. Folio, 18ins x 12ins, marbled endpapers. Proof volume 19.75ins x 13.5ins with lettering to the front board (not the spine). There is a double page county map and 53 plates as listed in the binding directions, plus a duplicate plate which appears both as the frontis to volume one and on p65. Three of the plates are coloured. All plates present as listed. Volume one: [iv], xxxvii, (i),526pp, 106pp (appendices and index) plus frontis, double page map and 34 plates (one coloured). Volume two: title page, 554pp, 73pp (appendices and index) plus 8 plates. Volume three: [iv], 619pp, (i), 52pp (index), plus 11 plates (2 coloured). Proof volume contains 45 plates ( of which 26 are marked as "proof". Volume one contains pages 471/2 which are sometimes omitted. In the index of this volume page 36 is misnumber as 32. In volume one, the base of the binding instruction page and the tops of the index have been carefully repaired. Cloth to front board of volume three a little faded. Portfolio volume rubbed to top & bottom of spine and corners. Overall a VG set with the unusual addition of the proof volume. Very heavy c17kg, very expensive to post overseas.

Each volume recently rebound in matching half leather binding with marbled boards. There is a double page county map and 53 plates as listed in the binding directions. Three of the plates are coloured. A plate of St Albans Abbey forms the frontis to vol 1, the county map is the frontis to vol 3 - all the rest of the plates have been gathered together at the end of each volume. There is also an additional plate in volume one entitled "South view of the Abbey Church, St Albans, Herts". This was published by a W. Langley and is quite heavily foxed. Volume one: [iv], xxxvi, 526pp, 106pp (appendices and index) plus frontis and 19 plates (one coloured). Volume two: title page, 554pp, 73pp (appendices and index) plus 16 plates. Volume three: [iv], [pages to replace those printed in earlier volumes (ie cancellation pages) vol 1, v to viii, xxxvii, 243/4, 335/6. vol 2 271/2], 619pp, 53pp (index), binding instructions plus frontis map and 17 plates (2 coloured). Some light foxing to the plates ( mostly to the margins) but overall a splendid set. Exceedingly heavy c17kg, very expensive to post overseas.

Printed for the author by Ibotson and Palmer, London, 1828, 1st edition. Half leather binding with paper covered boards. Seven raised bands to spine. Gilt lettering on red leather patch to compartment two. Elephant folio, 27ins x 20ins (69cm x 51cm), [viii], 105pp text followed by 17 plates. Of the text pages, 1 to 76 refers to the Menai bridge, 77 to 82 to Conway, 83 to 105 comprise 10 appendices and includes one additional plate. This additional plate is an engraving of a resolution sent to Lord Liverpool requesting the passing of a law to allow the building of the Menai Bridge and it contains 59 facsimile signatures. Of the 17 numbered plates, the first is a map, 2,3,4 & 5 are double page fold outs, ie 4 pages per plate in total, 15, 16 & 17 are engravings of views of the bridge (looking towards Beaumauris, Caernarvon and the Castle respectively). The engravings were done by R.G. Reeve from drawings by G. Arnold. The map has some browning, plate 4 is quite heavily foxed to the top and plate 16 shows some foxing. The binding has been restored / rebound at some point in the past (binders label at bottom of rear pastedown). Whilst the leather spine and corners look appropriate the boards are modern. There is wear to the corners suggesting that any rebind was done a while ago. The red leather label is probably original and is scuffed to one edge. Unfortunately, (in my opinion), the restorer has used inappropriately bright white paper for the new pastedowns. That said this is a complete well preserved copy of a scarce work. Please note that due to the size and weight this book will not be posted overseas. Nb William Alexander Provis (1792-1870) was engaged as assistant to Thomas Telford in 1814. As Telford was engaged in so many projects the details of the Menai bridge were left to Purvis and he recommended several alterations to the original design. The bridge opened in 1826.
