Here, Catharine Hess documents the Gentili/Barabei archive--a recently acquired collection of 276 documents relating to these celebrated ceramics--to show how it illuminates the production of maiolica." - Publisher. This book accompanies an exhibition "World War I: War of Images, Images of War." Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. *** "Much of how World War I is understood today is rooted in the artistic depictions of the brutal violence and considerable destruction that marked the conflict. Nothing but the Clouds Unchanged examines how the physical and psychological devastation of the war altered the course of twentieth-century artistic modernism. Following the lives and works of fourteen artists before, during, and after the war, this book demonstrates how the conflict and the resulting trauma actively shaped artistic production. Featured artists include Georges Braque, Carlo Carra, Otto Dix, Max Ernst, George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka, Ka the Kollwitz, Fernand Le ger, Wyndham Lewis, Andre Masson, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Paul Nash, and Oskar Schlemmer. Materials from the Getty Research Institute's special collections - including letters, popular journals, posters, sketches, propaganda, books, and photographs - situate the works of the artists within the historical context, both personal and cultural, in which they were created." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Forces unbound: art, bodies, and machines after 1914, by Philipp Blom; "In dead men breath": the afterlife of World War I, by Gordon Hughes; Andre Masson: into the "humus humaine", by Charles Palermo; Fernand Le ger: objects, abstraction, and the aesthetics of mud, by Daniel Marcus; Georges Braque: artilleryman, by Karen K. "American art museums share a mission and format that differ from those of their European counterparts, which often have origins in aristocratic collections. This groundbreaking work recounts the fascinating story of the invention of the modern American art museum, starting with its roots in the 1870s in the craft museum type, which was based on London's South Kensington (now the Victoria and Albert) Museum. At the turn of the twentieth century, American planners grew enthusiastic about a new type of museum and presentation that was developed in Northern Europe, particularly in Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia. Called Kulturgeschichte (cultural history) museums, they were evocative displays of regional history. American trustees, museum directors, and curators found that the Kulturgeschichte approach offered a variety of transformational options in planning museums, classifying and displaying objects, and broadening collecting categories, including American art and the decorative arts. Leading institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, adopted and developed crucial aspects of the Kulturgeschichte model. By the 1930s, such museum plans and exhibition techniques had become standard practice at museums across the country"--Publisher.

STAFFORD, BARBARA MARIA / TERPAK, FRANCES. Devices of wonder: from the world in a box to images on a screen. With an object list by Isotta Poggi. Los Angeles, CA: Getty Research Institute, 2001, x, 405pp., . Catalog of an exhibition held at the J. Paul Getty Museum from Nov. 13, 2001 through Feb. 3, 2002. - "Modern media machines are the latest addition to a long line of captivating instruments for the augmentation of perception. In Devices of Wonder, Barbara Stafford weaves an array of such sense-extending inventions into a provocative analysis of the social and cultural intersections between old and new technologies. Complementing her wide-ranging investigation are Frances Terpak's thirty-one short essays tracking the complex and often surprising links among individual items. An unusual catalog for an unusual exhibition, Devices of Wonder reframes the history of the beautiful "eye machines" humans have created out of our desire to see more, better, farther, and in a different way." - CONTENTS: 1.
