The transcript of Governor Bennett Riley's, "Uncourteous and Disrespectful" proclamation of 1849, along with explanatory notes by John B. Goodman III. The facsimile of the original printed proclamation, tipped to inner rear cover, was reproduced from the only known copy. Book.

High acid text paper browned and quite brittle, with edges heavily chipped on a few leaves with no loss of text. Needs careful handling. No jacket. The first edition was probably published in 1887. There appear to have been at least four printings -- 1887, 1888 (identified as 2nd ed.), 1889 (identified as 3rd ed.) and 1918 (also identified as 3rd ed.). Copies we've had in the past have tended to be the 1888 2nd edition. Contents of this 1918 edition seem unchanged fro the earlier printings/editions. Gordon's wife contributed "An Introductory Sketch" providing biographical details about the then young author. Gordon, born in 1861 in Coalraine, North Carolina, filled the pulpit at the First Baptist Church of Petersburg, Virginia, after attending the Richmond Theological Seminary.
