Paperback. Etat : Very Good. From nothing else that I have ever read have I gotten what every book of Conrad has given me. -Ernest Hemingway, Transatlantic Review, 1924What does it mean to give oneself to a tempting darkness? To a tempting character? What happens when that power that once tempted the mind and then was received by the mind, finally betrays that mind? Dark thoughts indeed. -From Schwager's IntroductionThe steaming jungles of Africa contain enough bloody ivory to bankroll an empire, but it takes a strong Company agent to manage the climate and the unhappy native laborers, many of whom are still cannibals. The most successful agent of them all is the disconcerting man known as Kurtz. But Kurtz has been sick, and his efficient (or brutal, depending on who is asked) methods can't be ignored any longer. So Charles Marlow leaves the tidy offices of London with a new steamboat command, and sets out to find this Mr. Kurtz and bring him back to civilization-out of the disease, neglect, and enveloping presence of an immense heart of darkness. This disruptive Canon Classic is a veiled look at imperialistic atrocities and the dark desires at the heart of every human venture. The Canon Classics series presents the most definitive works of Western literature in a colorful, well-crafted, and affordable way. Unlike many other thrift editions, our classics are printed on thicker text stock and feature individualized designs that prioritize readability by means of proper margins, leading, characters per line, font, trim size, etc. Each book's materials and layout combine to make the classics a simple and striking addition to classrooms and homes, ideal for introducing the best of literary culture and human experience to the next generation. This Worldview Edition features an introduction divided into sections on The World Around, About the Author, What Other Notables Said, Setting, Characters, & Plot Summary, Worldview Analysis, and 21 Discussion Questions & Answers.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Born in 1933 in a small rural village in Korea's North Cholla Province, Ko Un grew up in a Japanese-controlled land that was soon to experience the horrors of the Korean War. He became a Buddhist monk in 1952, and began writing in the late 1950s. Ten Thousand Lives is his major, ongoing work, which began in prison with a determination to describe every person he had ever met or heard of. It tells the stories of many figures from Korean history, as well as children and poor people, who, without his poems, would have vanished into oblivion. Green Integer also published selections from Vols. 1-10 (2005) and from Vols. 26-30 (2023) of this magnum opus. Maninbo, as it is known in Korea, represents one of the major classics of 20th-century Korean Literature. It currently contains 4,001 poems in 30 volumes. Volumes 21-25, selected for translation here, feature many poems dedicated to the victims of the 1960 April Revolution. Brother Anthony of Taizé, born in Britain, has been living in Korea since 1980. He taught English Literature at Sogang University (Seoul) for many years. He is now an Emeritus Professor there, as well as a Chair-Professor at Dankook University. He has published some 60 volumes of English translations of Korean poetry and fiction. Lee Sang-Wha is an Emeritus Professor at Chung-Ang University. She has published six translations into Korean of literary works, including two of works by Gary Snyder. She has collaborated with Brother Anthony on several volumes of translations of work by Ko Un.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Winner of the 2002 National Poetry Series, selected by Diane Ward, this book in four parts explores a dark world of sleep, dreams, and evil. But there is also joy in Sikelianos's work. Amidst the fears and despair for her own life and those of her children, the author recognizes the beauty of nature of the fleetingness of the natural world: summer summer summer thunder, thief, thief, thief in the night it's something you love, it's there only for you.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. What Is Man?, first published by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) in 1906, is a dialog between a young man and an older man jaded to the world. It involves ideas of destiny and free will, as well as of psychological egoism. The Old Man asserted that the human being is merely a machine, and nothing more. The Young Man objects, and asks him to go into particulars and furnish his reasons for his position.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. One of the great collections of love poems the world has known, The Song of Songs, which appears in the Old Testament, has, over the years, been the focus of much speculation. Who could have written these incredibly sexual lyrical poems. At various times Moses, Solomon, Isaiah, David, and Daniel have been suggested as the author of these works. Noted translator Willis Barnstone argues, in his short introduction, that Biblical scholars have generally dismissed all of these possibilities. Whoever the author is, woman is central in these stunningly powerful poems. …
