Paperback. Etat : Good. Fierce Joy: A Memoir is a medical mystery, a spiritual adventure, and a love story. Ellen Schecter had everything she ever wanted: a loving marriage, two great kids, and her dream career writing children's books and television programs. Then her life shattered when she was diagnosed with a painful, potentially fatal disease. Fierce Joy tells the story of how Schecter found a way to be sick without suffering and transformed the loss of her place in the world of work into a quest for her soul. Propelled by illness into a search for new meanings, she learned to listen to her body and find healing even though a cure was impossible. Never asking Why me? she instead asked, What's next? and forged a new life paradoxically filled with joy. AUTHOR: Ellen Schecter has published many books for children. Her first novel, The Big Idea (Hyperion), won the Americas Book Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature. Her Family Haggadah (Viking) was a Book-of-the-Month and Jewish Book Club selection. Schecter has written or collaborated on many multi-award-winning TV series for children and families, including: Reading Rainbow, hosted by LeVar Burton on PBS; The Magic School Bus, starring Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle; and Allegra's Window on Nick, Jr. She was executive producer of the award-winning documentary Voices of Lupus, which was distributed free to every English-speaking Lupus Foundation in the world.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Getting Unstuck is a groundbreaking first-look at stuckness the profound inability to move one's life forward. Being stuck is a mental health problem that affects thousands of adults; and yet, it has gone unrecognized and misunderstood by mental health professionals, until now. The author, psychiatrist Don Kerson, argues that adults who are stuck are bedeviled by a complex interaction between depression, attention deficit disorder and dissociation, a consequence of childhood trauma. People who are stuck can't get things done, no matter how smart, skilled, articulate or creative they may be. Their personal and professional lives are often on shaky ground, and depression is a constant problem. Therapy helps, sometimes. Anti-depressants help, sometimes. But they never really feel good. They remain stuck, Kerson argues, because the problem if recognized at all is being treated only partially. The key to getting people unstuck is to tease apart the depression, AD, and dissociation (or whichever of these conditions is present at any one time), and then to address each of them separately. Kerson wrote Getting Unstuck to help people with this problem to lead more productive and satisfying lives and to share what he's discovered with mental health professionals so they can begin to recognize the problem and offer effective treatment for it. Kerson details the successful and efficient method he developed to help his patients get their lives moving again. It includes the innovative use of neo-Ericksonian hypnotherapeutic integration exercises to address the procrastination and disorganization that plague individuals with AD.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Call of the Lark by Maura Mulligan is a chronicle of life in rural Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s, a testament to the challenges of emigration to the United States, and a portrait of one woman's strength and determination to forge a fulfilling life. The story begins in a New York novitiate where Maura is training to be a nun. Through the window of her memory, she invites the reader to share her childhood on a rain-swept farm in County Mayo, where women smoke clay pipes, the donkey brings turf from the bog, and children dibble the spuds and dodge a cane-wielding schoolmaster. In the bustling new world of New York City, Maura revels in the freedom of having a job and money to pursue her love of Irish dance. But even as she wins competitions, earns accolades at work and meets a nice lad, she feels the tug to do something more with her life. During her years as a nun, the author experiences a series of painful family losses at the same time she begins wrestling with questions about the role of women in the Catholic Church. She confronts her doubts, summons her courage, fixes her sights on the future, and leaves convent life.…
