In this part of the world, life is hard (e.g. infant mortality rate: 10%) and short (life expectancy at birth: 51 years). ¿Freedom in the World 2012¿ by Freedom House gives Somalia the worst possible rating both for political rights and civil liberties. It ranks at place 223 of 227 in terms of GDP per capita (CIA Factbook, 2012). The Global Peace Index lists Somalia as the most dangerous country in the world while the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG), which is supported by the United Nations, the African Union and the United States, merely controls parts of the capital Mogadishu (Bruton, 2009). Around 40% of Somali territory is occupied by a radical muslim militia called Al-Shabab. The famine that befell the horn of Africa in 2011 struck Somalia worst, a country, which is mostly referred to as a ¿failed state¿ for 20 years now. The situation in Somalia, so much is clear, is very serious and appalling in a variety of fields. But why is that In this paper I will describe Somaliäs recent development in the framework introduced by Szirmai (2005: pp. 29-33), using his 9 characteristics of developing countries for classification, and - building up on that - inquire into possible explanations for its deficiencies and its failure as a state.

Therefore, entrepreneurs need to aim for differentiation in order to gain an uncontested market position.Blue Oceans are more than a natural wonder and a loophole for mass-market participants: It is an efficient strategy management tool that focuses on finding innovative business concepts and thus the key to success for adaptive companies. In contrast to saturated Red Oceans, Blue Oceans feature value innovation through an adjusted offering with costs benefits.Similar to the Darwin¿s ¿Survival of the Fittest¿-approach the Blue Ocean Strategy depends on customizing and enhancing an already existing concept with innovative features. In such highly competitive markets, monopolists ¿ those who are able to find a market niche ¿ exhibit the best chances for economic success.W Hotels and MotelOne are two well-established paradigms for innovativeness in the hospitality industry. While W Hotels succeeded in adopting an exclusive lifestyle hotel destination with a focus on design, fashion and music, MotelOne concentrated on a premium low-cost oriented design-approach. Together both parties reinvented their segment through implementing trailblazing new concepts combined with the value- adding design factor. Moreover, Blue Oceans need to eliminate dispensable options, as W is less formal and more liberal than all its competitors, whereas MotelOne discarded unprofitable amenities like telephones, minibars or room service. The economic surplus derives from wider target groups as well as higher profit margins, which is why trendsetting Blue Oceans are classified as a future-proof and promising corporate path.

Joanne K. Charlotte Brunsdon (1995, 1997) has stated that the British soap opera has specific conventions, which make it a soap opera. Realism in a soap opera reflects the issues that are evident in society today and recognised by a female audience, allowing the viewer to connect with specific plots and characters. Starting with the self-ignition of a young Tunisian, the call for deposition of the despots, for the granting of basic civil and human rights and thereby for democracy lead to a movement ¿ often referred to as ¿the Arab Spring¿ - never seen before in that region of the earth. In Tunisia and Egypt the demonstrators accomplished to remove the potentates remaining peacefully despite the violent suppressions they were facing. In Lybia the rebels eventually gained power through a civil war being supported by the United Nations and the NATO. In Yemen and Syria the situation can still develop in several directions. In Bahrain endeavors have been violently nipped in the bud. Morocco, however, remains a puzzling exception. In my paper I will analyze the possible explanations the WorldValuesSurvey offers for the relatively reserved uprisings observed in Morocco. Therefore the ¿fundamental predispositions in favor of democratic orders¿(p189) by Lasswell and especially the complementing ¿dogmatism scale¿ by Rokeach ¿ as both discussed in Welzel (2007) - will serve as the theoretical foundation for assessing certain results given by the WVS. Rokeach¿s explanatory approach can basically be seen as the reversed analysis on the same issue: Lasswell provides preconditions that facilitate democratic behavior in an individual, Rokeach measures the ¿closed¿-mindedness that prevents democratic behavior in an individual, therefore both approaches can be perceived as complementing. I will focus my analysis on Rokeach¿s dogmatism scale. The perception that an open-mindedness towards other human beings and its various manifestations plays an important role in several areas is retrievable in many fields of social science, for example Putnam5 argues that it is crucial for social capital and civicness, Inglehart that post-materialism fosters open-mindedness in social coherences.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 12 pp. Englisch.

Paul Varjak, a young writer, falls in love with her and tries to convince her to settle down with him. The movie has become a crucial cultural reference. But before the film, there was a source text: a novella by the same title, written by Truman Capote and published in 1958. The film adaption was made only three years later, by director Blake Edwards, scriptwriter George Axelrod and the producers Martin Jurow and Richard Shepherd. Those who have read Capote¿s novella and have seen the film usually complain about huge difference between the two ¿ and they undoubtedly have a point. However, adaptation studies have far too long concentrated on the issue of fidelity alone, implying that a story could just be projected on the screen without having to undergo change. But film and literature are two very different mediums and thus, in the process of an adaptation, transformation must occur. There is no need for proving that book and film are different ¿ this has been discussed many times before and can be read in a great number of critical reviews. But there is much more to adaptation studies than a simple fidelity analysis. What I intend to do is to find out why book and film differ crucially in many points in order to prove that in spite of sharing (at least in big part) the same characters, the same setting, important parts of the story, key motifs and even often the same dialogues, the novella Breakfast at Tiffany¿s and the film based on it actually tell very different stories with very different, even contradictory underlying messages and thus with a very different reception and impact.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.

We need to be able to speak another language, especially English, in almost every job, we are a multicultural earth, we communicate over the internet to people all over the world and English is the language most spoken. Even if you work at Burger King, it can happen that customers come in who are not able to speak German and you will have to communicate with them somehow. When I think back to what I have learned about a good teacher and a successful language learner, I remember that the teacher plays an important role because he manages the whole classroom including the atmosphere and the motivation. If he is not motivated, the class won¿t be either because they will be bored. A good teacher should know about different learner types and should be able to handle them with the right strategies. Many problems can show up like different cultures and backgrounds of the learners. So the teacher and the learners have to find a way to collaborate with each other. Another important fact is that the teacher has to teach the learners all four skills of language learning instead of focusing at one. Writing, listening, speaking and reading skills should be taught on the same level. Furthermore, the materials a teachers uses should be interesting for the learners and motivate them. So if the students are not motivated or do not respect their teacher, he or she has to find a way how to change it. I see the major problems individuals face when learning languages in the different ways pupils learn. No class is homogenous and every single student in it has his/her own way of learning and dealing with another language. Some are more motivated or even already in touch with another language and some seem to despise to learn another language. Some are stronger and some are weaker in learning. And the teacher has to deal with all of them at the same time. So you have to manage to help the weaker ones without to letting the stronger pupils become demotivated. I think languages fit in with other subjects in many different ways. We always communicate in a language. This is mostly German. So I do not see a real difference in the communication in German or English in a subject. The only one is probably the fact that the students or pupils have to learn the vocabulary for being able to speak in other subjects in English also. Terms like green, ecological or environmental economics have been promoted, most famously in the first green wave, when the book ¿The Limits to Growth¿ in 1972 and the Brundtland Report ¿Our Common Future¿ in 1987, and more recently, when the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change in 2006 and the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2013, were published. But how come the business world started to care about the environment in the past, without any comprehensive standard forcing them to do so legally on a national or global level It has been felt that the financial accounting framework was not adequate to provide the information required by various internal and external stakeholders on environmental costs and liabilities, and steps taken by companies to mitigate global warming (Idowu et al. 2013, p. 1035). The endeavour was that the complete costs incurred by an enterprise including external, environmental costs like consumption of non-renewable resources, damages to the environment and degradation of nature, ought to be considered. These external costs, which are also called externalities or societal costs, are caused by the impact of organizational activities, products and services on natural environmental resources and society, but for which the organization doesn¿t bear any financial liability. In other words, ¿external costs result from corporate activities but are not internalized through regulations and prices. These scandals resulted in a loss of public trust in accounting and reporting practices .It is now the goal of the Sarbanes-Oxley law to restore public trust in the corporate world for shareholders and all other stakeholders like banks, employees, tax authorities, etc. In the slipstream of this vast legislation in all these jurisdictions, audit firms are facing certain restrictions. For example, providing legal services to Security and Exchange Commission (SEC)-registered companies and all their subsidiaries and affiliates wherever in the world is now prescribed if you are the auditor of one of those entities. Tax advisory services for SEC audit clients are allowed, provided you follow certain procedures .These regulations and the increased awareness of corporate governance issues have affected the profession of auditors. It has in many cases forced the auditing firm Ernst & Young to redefine its relationship with clients and reestablish its expectations and its deliverables.

The economic surplus derives from wider target groups as well as higher profit margins, which is why trendsetting Blue Oceans are classified as a future-proof and promising corporate path.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 56 pp. Englisch.

Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Spanisch.

Neuware -Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Biology - Miscellaneous, grade: 18/20, , course: European Master Programme in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, language: English, abstract: True awareness of the great importance and vulnerability of natural spaces and resources is at the basis of innovative, holistic approaches to management such as ecosystem-based Marine Spatial Planning (EB-MSP). Under this perspective, there is an increasing need for reliable and meaningful baseline maps to provide decision-makers with straightforward information on the intrinsic biological value of a given marine/coastal area. The aims of this work are (1) to establish a spatial biological valuation of the Belgian coastal zone, using Marine Biological Valuation methods (MBV) (Derous 2007); and (2) to explore the applications of MBV for EB-MSP under different scenarios of space-use conflict at the Belgian coast (beach nourishment and nature conservation). Biological data from 1995 to 2011 on four ecosystem components (macrobenthos, epibenthos, hyperbenthos, and avifauna) have been integrated into a single database and used to perform MBV.Despite time constraints, spatial coverage and overall data availability were surprisingly satisfactory and allowed for significant trends and patterns to be observed. Results support a seaward extension of the nature reserve of ¿IJzermonding¿ in Lombardsijde beach. Detailed analysis of areas under coastal flood risk indicates that the use of MBV maps to assist management decisions at low jurisdictional levels in the Belgian coast is positively promising. Still, for an integrative approach, MBV maps should be considered along with other criteria defined within a solid decision-support system. Further research on the applications of MBV to coastal areas is still necessary to enhance the robustness of the tool and consequently strengthen its effectiveness within spatial planning strategies, towards an integrative and ecosystem-based management of coastal areas worldwide.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 64 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Scientific Study from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,0, University of Southern California (Business Faculty), course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this report is to provide a Strategic Management Report with detailed strategic analyses of the dominant civil aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. The discussion main part of this report is separated into internal and external analyses, which are reasoned in greater detail and supported with reasonable graphs and tables in the attached Appendices. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to which is the more strategic savvy and which company has the more sustainable enterprise; and there is a recommendation given in which company a potential investor should rather invest in.Airbus and Boeing are having a neck-and-neck race in the aircraft industry for jets over 100 seats between Airbus and Boeing about the market leadership. After Airbus overtook its rival the first time in 2001 in terms of aircraft order and delivery, it stayed in front the last years until Boeing got back on top in 2006. The aircraft manufacturing industry is constantly growing, a global market and had a size of US$ 63 billion revenues in 2006. It is characterized by high entry barriers and investment in R&D and by a duopoly with Airbus and Boeing having a market share of 86% for aircrafts over 100 seats. At the moment Airbus is in weaker financial position than its competitor. Boeing had an average year in 2006 with a moderate and good profitability, whereas Airbus is not in the red, but it is remarkable that the company had a bad year caused by the production and delivery problems with the A380, connecting with the delay compensations. In general, both Airbus and Boeing experience a strong support by the parent companies, whereas Boeing¿s outstanding and tightened military division strongly keeps the commercial airplane division on the ground and gives it an edge.In terms of product strategy the strength of the one is the weakness of the other: Boeing found no real answer on the A380 as mega-jumbo, but is highly successful with its B787 in the mid-size, long-range segment, where Airbus is lagging behind with its try to catch up through the A350. The market opportunities for both companies and strategies exist with increasing air traffic, especially in Asia with its upcoming markets China and India. On the other side increasing prices for raw materials or indirectly oil price fluctuations, and the risk of a new external shocks are threatening the performance.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 88 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0, Copenhagen Business School, language: English, abstract: This thesis is about the perception of ¿fit¿ between two partner brands in a co-branding venture. Previous studies have already identified that a perceived fit between partner brands leads to a positive evaluation of the co-branded offering by consumers. Despite the great importance of fit between brands, it has not been investigated yet which factors (e.g. similar price level, target group, product category) lead to a perceived fit between partner brands by consumers. For closing this research gap, a theoretical framework is developed in order to identify potential ¿fit factors¿ that have an influence on the perceived fit. Based on the categorization theory and different brand association classifications the following potential fit factors between two brands are identified: price fit, user fit, usage fit, quality fit, brand personality fit, and category fit.To find out if these fit factors have an impact on the perceived overall (global) fit of two partner brands, an empirical study of 9 real co-brands is conducted. 180 students are asked in an online questionnaire to state their perception of the 9 co-brands, regarding the different fit factors.Findings of the empirical study show that similarities in the price level (price fit), users (user fit), usage situation (usage fit), quality (quality fit) and brand personality (brand personality fit) seem to have a positive relationship to the overall (global) fit of two partner brands, whereas a category fit has no clear relationship to the global fit of two brands. On the one hand, these findings help brand managers to select the right partner brand. On the other hand, it delivers first indications for academics why consumers perceive some co-brands as fitting together and others not.The findings of this research, as well as the developed theoretical framework, can be used for future research in this area.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 100 pp. Englisch.

They play a crucial role in the promotion and protection of human rights at the national level. Within their broad mandate, they advise governments on various human rights issues, monitor the implementation of international human rights instruments, promote the harmonisation of national law and practice with the international human rights standards, disseminate human rights information, cooperate with regional and international human rights bodies, and remedy human rights violations. However, National Human Rights Institutions are primarily domestic instruments, they increasingly engage with the international human rights mechanisms. In the last 20 years, they became the practical link between international human rights standards and their concrete application at the national level. The institutions¿ interaction with the UN Charter-based and Treaty-based Bodies is a relatively new phenomenon and as such, has its obstacles. In order to clarify the nature and ways of co-operation between NHRIs and the UN human rights monitoring mechanisms, this Handbook sets out the characteristics and role of National Human Rights Institutions in the UN human rights framework. Meanwhile, it is aiming to answer two main questions: what added value does the participation of NHRIs at the international level bring and how should the cooperation between NHRIs and the UN be strengthened in the future.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 108 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, grade: 7.81, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (School of English - Department of American Literature and Culture), language: English, abstract: The operatic genre is considered to be locked in a rigid itinerary, which cannot perform detours of any kind. Therefore, it is thought to be genre that is more revered than respected bearing, thus, a resemblance to religion rather than art. What this dissertation seeks to explore is a certain possibility in the form of a hypothesis. We will explore the ¿what-if¿ of unlocking this rigidity and attempting a sort of transfiguration. By painting the scenery, or rather the landscape of opera in colors of current American trends and traits. USA has always been a country which has had the privilege of nurturing opera fans by supporting the popularity of opera in a variety of ways. What will be examined are the ways that inspired directors Jonathan Miller and his 1975 ¿Mafiä production of Rigoletto for the ENO as well as James McDonald¿s 2002 ¿White House¿ production of the opera for the WNO, to present the opera in an American context. Giuseppe Verdi¿s masterpiece Rigoletto along with its manifestations and interpretations by these two directors that design and paint an American landscape for European either by provoking the audience and in particular, opera-buffs and hardcore fans, or by triggering images known and popular to the wider audience bestowing upon opera a most welcome sense and nuance of familiarity and belongingness. Rigoletto offers and carries the powerful potential to function as a canvas for this venture to be formulated. The operäs characters, as viewed through the landscapes that these two directors have painted, invite the audience to familiarize themselves with figures that are flexible enough to unfold as space-less, deterritorialized images that have the ability to provoke and boast an Americaness which can be either welcome or cause a bit of an uncomfortable spine-tingling wonderment of political and cultural nature.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 104 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: summa cum laude, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: The contribution of this study is manifold and relevant for academics and practitioners alike. It adds to the literature in the fields of corporate finance, financial accounting and stochastic modeling. In particular, this dissertation provides answers to the following questions: given the less efficient markets, can specialists as financial analysts provide additional information, which contain investment value How can the true value of a company be determined with publicly available data and can discrepancies between fundamental and market values be exploited Finally, is it possible to assess the firm¿s financial health and its likelihood of failure several years into the future Adressing these questions, the study first illustrates the company valuation assessment by financial analysts as summarized in their target prices and the information processing by analysts and investors in detail. Second, this thesis offers a novel empirical implementation of a model for fundamental company valuation that employs accounting data. In this context it demonstrates severe over- and undervaluation from a fundamental perspective in the U.S. technology sector over the last 20 years. Both the analysts¿ company valuation captured by their target prices and the implementation of the fundamental company valuation model translate into significant investment value before and after transaction costs, which supports the notion of non-efficient markets. Finally, one major contribution is to evaluate a new approach for bankruptcy prediction that is based on stochastic processes. It is theoretically appealing and performs better especially for longer forecast horizons than standard methods.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 156 pp. Englisch.
